BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- China Friday protested two Japanese local assembly members' landing on an isle of the Diaoyu Islands, saying the move seriously infringed China's territorial sovereignty."The Diaoyu Islands and its adjacent islets have been an integral part of the Chinese territory since ancient times," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu reiterated Friday night.According to reports, two members of the municipal assembly of Ishigaki, Okinawa Prefecture, landed on an islet of the Diaoyu Islands and stayed there for a while Friday morning.Jiang said China has lodged a solemn representation and voiced strong opposition to the Japanese side.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed the need to stabilize commodity prices, extend the coverage of the social security network and boost employment to ensure the country develops in a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable manner.Hu made the call Tuesday when presiding over lectures on economic development attended by members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The lectures were given by two researchers respectively from the National Development and Reform Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.Efforts should be made to establish a long-term mechanism that increases consumptions, renovate and upgrade traditional industries, and cultivate and support strategic emerging industries, Hu noted.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called for deepening of the country's reform and opening up, adding that improving people's livelihood and ensuring their well-being, promoting economic growth and maintaining social stability are the Party's top agenda.Hu said impetus should be given to the development of the service industry as well as to the coordination of regional development, and vigorous yet steady endeavors should be made to advance urbanization.Hu also called for efforts to embrace reform and innovation in the country's economic, political, cultural and social systems and urged local authorities to seek opinions and advice from the people in formulating regional development blueprints.Further, Hu asked CPC officials to cement their ties with the people and do practical things for the public.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese ministries and local governments have coordinated efforts to combat price hikes by increasing grain supplies, clamping down on speculation and offering subsidies, as the central government has growing concerns about rising inflation.In a move to head off price hikes, the State Administration of Grain will increase sales of grain supplies to meet the public's needs and stabilize market prices, the agency said in a statement posted on its website Friday.Additionally, it will sell a set amount of cooking vegetable oil and soybeans from government reserves beginning next week, in addition to the weekly sales of wheat, rice and corn that has already begun, the statement said.The authority will also send groups of staff to major grain production regions to inspect and guide purchases of autumn grain and regulate business practices, it added.The statement said the move was designed to protect farmers' interests and maintain moderate prices in the grain market.Further, the Ministry of Agriculture announced Friday that it will work to add 8 million mu (0.53 million hectares) of planting areas for vegetables and 2 million mu for potatoes to stabilize agricultural production and increase vegetable supplies during the winter.Also, Zhou Bohua, head of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, said the administration will "seriously" work to prevent the hoarding of agricultural products, forcing up prices and other speculative practices.These measures echoed the central government's call to tame price rises.China's State Council, or the Cabinet, on Wednesday announced price control guidelines to reassure consumers facing rising inflation.The efforts mainly included imposing temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials when necessary, and urging local authorities to offer temporary subsidies to needy families.In addition, the government will work to ensure market supplies and strengthen market supervision.Local governments also unveiled specific measures intended to help people pressured by the higher cost of living. CHANGSHA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A former Party discipline chief in a central China city was executed Thursday after being convicted of multiple counts of crime, said a local court.Zeng Jinchun, former secretary of the Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and vice secretary of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Committee, was executed by shooting, said a statement from the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City, capital of the central China's Hunan Province.Zeng was found guilty of taking more than 31 million yuan (about 4.7 million U.S. dollars) in bribes alone or along with others since the latter half of 1997 through to September 2006, said the court source.In return, he gave the bribers mine contracts and job promotions.Zeng had assets worth around 9.5 million yuan which he couldn't account for.He was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court of Changsha City in November 2008 for accepting bribes and failing to account for his assets.The Hunan Provincial Higher People's Court rejected Zeng's appeal in July 2009. The Supreme People's Court had approved the death sentence handed down to Zeng, said the statement.

VIENNA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China remained open to initiatives on the establishment of an international nuclear fuel bank , a senior Chinese diplomat said here Friday. "The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA should play an active role in establishing such mechanism, on the prerequisite of maintaining its independence, " said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna. "China is of the view that the establishment and operation of multilateral mechanism on assurance of nuclear fuel supply involves complex political, economic, technical and legal factors as well as practical interests of all Member States, " Hu told a board meeting of IAEA. Referring to an U.S. proposal on the establishment of an IAEA low-enrichment uranium bank, Hu noted that some IAEA Member States still had concerns on that proposal. "The concerns of relevant states should be taken into full consideration and resolved in order to seek the most extensive support," Hu said. He also said that while the objective of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons should be promoted, Member States ' right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy should not be affected.There have been a number of initiatives to establish nuclear fuel reserve banks in recent years.The U.S. proposal envisions a nuclear fuel bank run by IAEA, to which countries could turn to if their regular supplies were cut.However, the plan has met opposition from some developing countries. They worry that a nuclear fuel bank could undermine their right to acquire their own nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Some countries are also concerned with the possibility of fuel supply being controlled by western powers and used for political purposes.
