(AP) — Scientists say they have found an elusive chameleon species that was last spotted in Madagascar 100 years ago.Researchers from Madagascar and Germany said Friday they've discovered several living specimens of Voeltzkow’s chameleon during an expedition to the northwest of the African island nation.A team led by scientists from the Bavarian Natural History Collections said genetic analysis determined that the species is closely related to Labord’s chameleon.“These animals are basically the mayflies among vertebrates,” said Frank Glaw, curator for reptiles and amphibians at the ZSM, told the AP.Researchers believe that both reptiles only live during the rainy season. They hatch from eggs, grow rapidly, spar with rivals, mate, and then die during a few short months."The assumed short life might also partly explain why this splendid species got 'lost' for many decades, since most roads in its habitat are not accessible in the wet season," researchers wrote in a report in the journal Salamandra. 1019

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County family has a message for a prankster who lit a firework on their doorstep. The Bennetts family's security video caught what appeared to be a teenager lighting a firework and setting it down on the porch of their San Marcos home last Friday night. The teen is then seen ringing the doorbell before running off. “I don’t know exactly what kind of firework it was. But it made a pretty big boom,” homeowner Melanie Bennetts said. She said there was a bench with pillows on their porch that could have caught on fire. Her husband was home at the time but didn’t answer the door. The Bennetts’ have two teenagers, but they did not recognize the young man in the security video. Bennetts said kids have egged and toilet-papered their house in the past. She doesn’t make a big deal about it because she understands kids will be kids. But in this case, she hopes kids and parents take note of the incident, and that it becomes a lesson that some actions could have serious consequences. “We live in Southern California where fire is not a joke,” she said. 1104

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four people were arrested following a Border Patrol chase that made its way through San Diego Wednesday afternoon. The chase started after noon on Highway 94 in East County after the driver failed to stop for an immigration inspection at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Jamul. The agency said the chase made its way through the county before ending in San Diego's Legacy Walk neighborhood. The four suspects then stopped and fled the vehicle near San Pasqual Street and Logan Avenue. According to the agency, the suspects then ran into the Mountain View Beckworth Library where they were taken into custody. All four suspects were in the U.S. illegally, Border Patrol says. 704

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego Police shot a man who died Wednesday at a San Ysidro mobile home park. The incident happened at Willow Road and East Calle Primera about 1:45 p.m., police confirmed.According to police, witnesses say the suspect, who was only described as a Hispanic man in his 50s, was walking through mobile home park with an AK-47-style rifle. A witness told police that the man was acting odd and appeared to be hiding from someone. Several people in the area say the man pointed the rifle at them. After police arrived on scene, the man approached the officers’ location and fired a round from the rifle, police say. An officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he didn’t cooperate. At that point, a witness said the man raised the weapon in the direction of the officers and gunshots were heard again before the suspect fell to the ground. Officers administered first aid until medics arrived. The suspect, who hasn’t yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that one officer, a 2-and-a-half year veteran of the department, shot the man. The officer’s name isn’t being released at this time. "Black Bear" is a proudly weird film that shakes up the formula to the point that it explodes like a soda left in the fridge.The experimental film's fortunes rise and fall around the dryly comic talents of Aubrey Plaza, who delivers in a major way, exploring the playful cruelty she's subtly hinted at in many of her comedic roles.Plaza explores her dark side as Allison, a manipulative actress, and filmmaker who rents a home from Blair (Sarah Gordon) and her husband, Gabe (Christopher Abbott) to shoot a mysterious new project. She quickly inserts herself into their personal disputes, taking a sadistic pleasure in driving a wedge between the couple with subtle insults and provocations.Allison sees people as her playthings, and freely spins lies, half-truths, and seductive inferences, slithering in and out of suspicion, trust, hostility, and feigned kindness toward her mysterious goals. The interplay between Allison, Gabe, and Blair was enough to carry the movie, which would have been better suited had it stuck with the theme to its bitter end.Instead, the script flips just as the intensity level simmers.Writer/director Lawrence Michael Levine divides the film into two parts. The first is a captivating psychological game, but the second seems like a slew of barely-connected outtakes in which actors have swapped roles.While the scenes are often fascinating as they stand alone, they don't coalesce into much of a unified purpose. If the goal was to satirize the art of filmmaking or play with the quirks of the actor-director-writer dynamic, the result is a convoluted mess. Whatever inside jokes or buried subtext Levine were going for just doesn't translate.The title, which is no doubt some sort of opaque metaphor, also refers to a literal bear who just shows up, because, well, why not? Once Levine has stripped his project of any sense of cohesion, just about anything goes.
