BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has encouraged students from Xinjiang who are attending school in southern Guangdong Province to study hard and become qualified builders of the country.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China(CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when replying to a letter written by the 12th graders of Guangdong Guangya High School on Sunday, or the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year.Zhou visited the time-honored school in Guangzhou, capital of the southern province, last September and talked with the students from northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. They wrote a letter to Zhou before the Spring Festival, which fell on Sunday.Zhou said in the letter that launching classes for high school students from Xinjiang in inland provinces is a major decision made by the Party and the government. It aims to let Xinjiang's children to enjoy better education so they can grow up healthily and make greater contributions to their hometown and the country.Zhou said the 56 ethnic groups in the country are a family and they have gone through thick and thin together to forge the flesh-and-blood ties.Zhou said the Party and government are exerting great efforts to address major issues including development gap between southern Xinjiang and other western regions, and the eastern coastal regions of the country.He told students that the CPC Central Committee is to hold a meeting on Xinjiang work, at which major decision will be made to boost Xinjiang's development. He also encouraged students to contribute to ethnic solidarity and safeguard the national unity.

BEIJING, Feb.25 (Xinhua) -- China's energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (about 1464.1 U.S.dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) dropped 2.2 percent in 2009, China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said here Thursday.Preliminary estimates indicate that the total amount of energy consumption last year stood at 3.1 billion tonnes of standard coal equivalent, up 6.3 percent compared to the 2008 level, according to a report released on the NBS website Thursday.The report did not reveal the exact amount of energy consumed per 10,000 yuan of GDP, but the figure for 2008 was 1.10 tonnes of standard coal, according to a previous NBS report.China's water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP totalled 209.3 cubic meters in 2009, down 7.6 percent from a year earlier. Water consumption per 10,000 yuan of industrial output was 116.4 cubic meters in the same period, down 8.2 percent from 2008, said the report.The report also showed that China consumed 3.02 billion tonnes of coal, 380 million tonnes of crude oil, 88.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 3,697.3 billion kilowatt hours of electric power in 2009, up 9.2 percent, 7.1 percent, 9.1 percent and 6.2 percent year-on-year, respectively.China has been making efforts to raise energy efficiency by eliminating high energy-consuming equipment and introducing energy-saving technologies, said the previous NBS report.Energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP was down 1.79 percent year-on-year in 2006, 4.04 percent in 2007, and 4.59 percent in 2008, according to NBS.

BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman Thursday said the U.S.- China relationship is mature and stable enough to weather differences between the two countries.Huntsman made the remarks in his speech, "2010: The Year of Decision," at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing.The ambassador thought 2010 would be "the most important year in the history of the Sino-U.S. relations," as the two sides had to take action and make real progress on pressing global challenges like economic recovery and climate change.The China-U.S relationship had a good start after President Obama took office last year.However, U.S arms sales to Taiwan and U.S leaders' meetings with the ** Lama posed problems."I've seen enough ups and downs to know that the recent turbulence we've experienced is part of a natural cycle. BEIJING, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Russia would strengthen coordination to better implement the regional cooperation program approved by state leaders last year, officials from the two countries said here on Sunday.The statement was made by Zhang Guobao, head of the National Energy Administration and vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, and representatives of the Russian government, at the China-Russian regional cooperation symposium.In September 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev approved the cooperation program between northeast China and Russia's far east and east Siberian region.Zhang said the cooperation program, covering many fields, included more than 300 key projects in local cooperation and infrastructure construction and transformation.The symposium is the first bilateral meeting aimed at promoting China-Russian regional cooperation since the approval of the cooperation program.
