SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There is new frustration for San Diegans trying to cutback their spending amid coronavirus restrictions.Some companies are refusing to freeze automatic renewals despite being closed. That's leading to resentment as workers across the county face layoffs, furloughs and reduced hours. Amanda Sullivan, a mental health professional, says she's still being billed a month for her 24 Hour Fitness membership, despite the gym shuttered. 24 Hour Fitness promises instead to add the lost time to the end of her membership. "It feels like robbery," she said. "We're taking your money, you can't do anything about it, we're telling you this is what we're offering, we'll just tack on time at the end."Sullivan said her emails to 24 Hour Fitness have gone largely ignored, or she's received boilerplate responses. Meanwhile, 24 Hour Fitness has shuttered its call center. In a statement, the gym stood by its decision, noting it also made available its subscription app that includes exercise instruction."24 Hour Fitness is focused on the continued health and safety of our club members, team members and guests. With that in mind, we have made some difficult decisions to ensure our ability to provide services to our club members and sustain our business over the long term," the statement said.The coronavirus shutdowns have prompted a variety of responses from membership-based businesses.While 24 hour is billing as normal, other gyms, like CorePower, OrangeTheory and Chuze have frozen fees. "I'm finding that vendors are working with their customers to come to terms with this horrible dilemma," Schenk said. "We're all facing it, and we have to face it together. So if a vendor thinks that it's going to take advantage of its members it will find in the not-too-distant future it will have lost that member and many others."Michael Weiner, a consumer attorney with Slate Law Group, said it is difficult to analyze situations without seeing individual contracts, but in general a consumer would appear to be on strong legal footing if he or she is being billed for something they aren't getting. Weiner suggested reaching out to corporate, and posting on social media if things don't change. "If they were still rebuffed, there are multiple avenues to take, from hiring counsel to speak to the company on their behalf, to filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the local San Diego Chamber of Commerce," Weiner said. New renderings show the schools intentions of building a "‘grand entrance" to attract more students and people from San Diego. A 3,000 seat amphitheater, a six-building student center with retail and restaurants are just some of the things showcased in the new plans. “There is hardly a thing that exists in the Gaslamp or Balboa that doesn’t exist here,” said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla on the renderings. UCSD believes public transportation that’s being built near and on-campus will help with the future influx of people they want checking out their amenities. The blue line trolley and the three stations around the area are forecasted to be completed by 2021. “We want to be one more destination to the San Diego experience,” added Khosla, “we’re gonna change this campus to have these things so students can hang out and the community will come here to hang out too.” The price tag is still being worked out but it’s expected to cost well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are hundreds of thousands of school employees across the state who won't be in your child’s virtual classroom, but are making sure school operations continue.They are known as classified staff, but you know many of them as teacher aides, bus drivers, and custodians."I myself am a 38-year custodian," said Ben Valdepena.Valdepena is a school district employee and an essential worker."The kids call me Mr. Ben, but throughout the state of California, there's a Mr. Joe, and there's a Mr. George, and that's a title the kids give you," Valdapena said.He's also the head of the California School Employees Association.The union represents about 250,000 classified employees at more than 750 school districts across the state.Many of those workers will be on the job when the school year starts, but in a bit of a different role.Instead of transporting kids to school, Valdeapna says some buses have been transformed into internet providers."They are now becoming WiFi hotspots where they are actually parking their buses in areas in certain school districts to provide WiFi for the kids in the neighborhood,” Valdapena said.In the Sweetwater Union High School District, bus drivers have been assisting with food distribution, processing free and reduced lunch applications, and distributing books and supplies, among other things.The district said it employs about 1,800 classified employees.A spokesperson explained, "Although we are in distance learning, our classified staff continue to support the daily operations of the sites and the district in a variety of ways that include everything from direct support of student learning, maintenance and operations, nutrition services, business services, and several other areas. For example, we have been working with our classified instructional assistants to not only assist students with distance learning, but also with COVID temperature checks for visitors and staff who come to campus, compliance with COVID safe distances, book and supply collection/distribution, responding to parent questions, and contacting students to ensure they can participate to their fullest."A spokesperson for San Diego Unified School District said, "Even though we are opening online Aug. 31, we are still hopeful of getting physically reopened again when it is safe to do so. All school staff is both preparing for that day, while working to provide the best possible online learning experience. Classified employees are no different in this respect."Valdapena said the state budget protected custodial staff, food service workers, and transportation workers, but there are many other roles within schools."Some of our school districts (districts across the state) have decided to forego that and lay off as many classified employees as they can," Valdapena said. "One of our school districts just laid off over 50% of the classified employees."The Poway Unified School District is in the middle of negotiations with its classified union."We're just starting that conversation to really drill in see what that work looks like and how we go about matching up those that are willing with the need of the district," said Courtney Martin, the president of the Poway School Employees Association.
