LIBREVILLE, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo held talks here on Friday with President of Gabonese National Assembly Guy Nzouba Ndama, saying that the National People's Congress (NPC) of China is ready to step up cooperation with the parliament of Gabon to add new vigor into bilateral relations and jointly push forward friendly relations between the two countries.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature, called Gabon a true friend of China, saying that China is satisfied with the growth momentum of the bilateral relations and the two countries have seen healthy and stable development of friendly and cooperative relations since they established diplomatic ties 34 years ago.     Wu said that the two sides have achieved remarkable results in cooperation between governments, parliaments and various political parties in fields such as economy and trade, culture and education as well as public health. Speaker of Gabon's Senate Rene Radembino Coniquet (R) shakes hands with Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, during their meeting in Libreville, capital of Gabon, Nov. 7, 2008.    "We have established our close consultation and cooperation on international affairs, and more importantly, we have made breakthroughs on working together on some big-scale projects," Wu said.     "It's the treasure to both sides and China will make joint efforts with Gabon to step up cooperation in all dimensions," he added.     Wu said that the NPC represents the will of Chinese people and shoulders very important responsibility to promote the friendship between Chinese and Gabonese.     He called on the two countries' parliaments to boost their exchange and cooperation, especially between the parliamentary ad hoc committees and various friendship groups.     Echoing Wu's views on the bilateral relations and inter-parliamentary cooperation, Ndama said that the frequent mutual visits between the two countries' leaders have pushed forward the bilateral ties into a new stage of development, which he said already brought substantial benefits to the Gabonese people.     He suggested that the two nations should work closer to expand their cooperation on culture, education, aviation and tourism, reiterating that Gabon would continue to adhere to the one-China policy and support China's peaceful reunification.     Ndama also said that the relations between the two parliaments have showcased the Gabon-China friendly ties and the Gabonese National Assembly hoped to maintain the frequent exchanges to expand mutual understanding and consolidate substantial cooperation in various fields.     The Chinese top legislator also met with Rene Radembino Coniquet, speaker of the Gabonese Senate, on the same day. The two sides voiced commitment to boost the bilateral relations and enhance their cooperation to a higher level.     "The facts have already proved that the growth of the China-Gabon relations not only benefits the two countries and their people, but also helps to promote the peace and development of the world," Wu told Coniquet.     Wu arrived here on Thursday afternoon for a two-day official visit to Gabon. He will fly to Ethiopia on Saturday to continue his five-African nations tour, which also includes Algeria, Madagascar and Seychelles.

GENEVA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum (WEF) is "very proud" that it has managed to maintain "very positive" ties with China, a senior WEF official has said.     "We all know that China is an important factor in the future evolution and development of worldwide economy. So we are all very interested in what China will be doing," said Andre Schneider, managing director and chief operating officer of the Geneva-based organization.     In a recent interview with Xinhua before next week's opening of the 2009 WEF annual meeting, also known as the Davos Forum, in the Swiss Alpine skiing resort Davos.     More than 40 heads of state or government, including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and some 1,400 business leaders, have confirmed their participation at the five-day meeting scheduled to deal with the ongoing financial crisis and other global challenges.     Premier Wen's participation will certainly be "a unique opportunity" for the world to better understand what are the plans of the Chinese leadership to deal with the crisis, Schneider said.     Schneider noted the first two WEF annual meetings of the new champions, dubbed "Summer Davos Forum," were both held in China, in Dalian in 2007 and Tianjin a year later.     The success of the "Summer Davos Forum," a gathering of new multinational companies from China and across the world to explore the mechanisms of continued and sustainable growth, indicated the strong collaboration between the two sides, he said.     The WEF's choice of China as the host of the "Summer Davos Forum" was "an absolutely right one," he said.     Schneider noted that cooperation between the WEF and China started in 1979, when China first sent a delegation to the Davos Forum.     China and its economic growth has been a topic of interest for participants at the Davos Forum in recent years.     In June 2006, the organization opened a representative office in Beijing, which aims to deal with all interactions with China. "It's a clear sign of our deepened collaboration," he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday called for more steps in the first quarter this year to reverse the trend of economic slowdown as soon as possible and realize a good start for the whole of 2009.     Wen made the remarks during the second plenary meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet. The meeting was held here Monday. Participants at the meeting discussed the draft of the government work report, which would be delivered for review at the second plenary session of the 11th National People's Congress in March. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao presides over the second plenary meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet, in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 19, 2009. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday called for more steps in the first quarter this year to reverse the trend of economic slowdown as soon as possible and realize a good start for the whole 2009    The draft would be sent to provincial governments and central departments for advice.     The soliciting advice and revision part was a process to achieve concerted understanding and enhance confidence; a process to counter the global financial crisis and address the difficulties which arose from it; a process to solicit public opinion and make scientific decisions; and a process to improve policies and measures as well as enhance their implementation, Wen said. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao presides over the second plenary meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet, in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 19, 2009Last year was an unusual year for the country, especially the second half of 2008 when the government unveiled a series of measures to counter the negative impacts of the global financial crisis.     "These measures have been proved prompt, correct and effective," Wen said.     "This year is the most difficult year for China's economic development so far this century," he said.     Efforts should be made to enhance the implementation of the government's economic stimulus package and measures announced to boost the country's major industries, he said.     The Chinese government has announced boosting measures for the steel and auto industries, and is planning measures for eight other major industries.     Wen urged departments concerned to speed up work on the making of these boosting measures.     He called for more efforts on agricultural production during the winter and the coming spring, and said favorable policies for farmers should be firmly implemented.     He also called for efforts to promote stable and relatively fast industrial development.     Enterprises should be encouraged to intensify internal management, reduce operating cost, expand markets and stabilize employment, he said, and small and medium-sized enterprises should be given more support.     Work should be done to ensure service and commodity supply during the upcoming Spring Festival as well as boost consumption in both rural and urban regions, he said.     The government should work to maintain stable growth in trade, Wen said, underlining the need to expand emerging markets and improve the quality of exported goods.     Wen also stressed the need for work to ensure the country's financial stability and safety. The government should properly deal with changes brought about by the global financial crisis and maintain sound operation of the banking sector, he said.     More attention should be given to implement the central government's policy to improve people's living standards and solve problems concerning people's interests, he said.     He urged governments at all levels to attach great importance to boosting employment, help people who had difficulties in life, and ensure production safety and social stability.
