DENVER -- An Aurora Theater Shooting survivor, who made the difficult decision to amputate his leg after years of excruciating pain, is now taking his first steps toward recovery.Joshua Nowlan was shot in the arm and the leg in the 2012 movie theater shooting, and recovery has been hell. "Last night, I couldn't sleep whatsoever," Nowlan said, walking into Creative Technology Prosthetic's Denver office. "I was so excited that today finally has come that I can put my prosthetic on for the first time."After doctors amputated his leg in January, he had major complications, including kidney failure, a serious fall and a hematoma that required another emergency surgery."I am still completely 100 percent on the side that I am happy, that I did the amputation surgery," Nowlan said, rubbing the stump that is still swollen and healing.As he took his first steps on his prosthetic, he began to cry."It feels so weird, but it feels so right, too, at the same time," he said.Zach Harvey made the prosthetic and said that eventually, Nowlan will walk without any assistance and with a different prosthetic."Right now, we want something a little softer, but as he starts to tolerate pressure, walk faster, and wants to do more activities, then we'll provide him with something a little springier," Harvey said.Nowlan said it's another piece in the puzzle he is trying to put back together."Even though it happened five years ago, he took something from me that will never be put back together," Nowlan said. "And here I am trying to makeshift those puzzle pieces and put them back in."  1656

(KGTV) — Del Mar Fairgrounds and city officials met Tuesday to devise a traffic plan with one of the main arteries to the venue closed.Northbound Jimmy Durante Boulevard has been blocked off since a bluff collapse in late April.The road won't reopen until at least June 4, but the county fair opens May 31. "People are going to start going back through the neighborhood, or you're just going to sit in line," said Del Mar resident Jim Murff. Del Mar City Manager Scott Huth said plans include increased signage to instruct fairgoers to stay on Interstate 5 to the Via de la Valle exit. He said the city would also hire "flaggers" to direct drivers past the stop signs in its beachfront neighborhood, north to Via de la Valle. "Even with the flaggers that delay is not going to be as efficient as getting off (the freeway) at Via de la Valle," Huth said. Annie Pierce, a spokeswoman for the fairgrounds, said the fair would operate at least three days while northbound Jimmy Durante Boulevard is closed. Democrats now lead Republicans by 52% to 41% in a nationwide generic Congressional ballot according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released Tuesday. The blue lead has increased slightly from eight percentage points in June of this year to an 11 percentage point difference in the most recent poll.Despite Democrats' advantage on that measure, a plurality (48%) in the same poll believe Republicans will maintain control of Congress after the election, compared with 40% who believe Democrats will gain control.Among those who favor the Democratic candidate in their district, 64% say they think Democrats will ultimately win control of Congress, while among those backing Republican candidates, 83% think the GOP will maintain control.Compared to previous elections, 68% of registered voters say they're more enthusiastic to vote in this election than in the past. Registered Democrats and Republicans report being more excited to vote at similar levels, with 70% and 68% saying so, respectively.However, Democrats have taken a much higher leap in enthusiasm vs. 2016 than Republicans. DANBURY, Conn. (AP) - It's official. It's now the John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant in Danbury, Connecticut. The City Council voted 18-1 Thursday night to rename the plant after the comedian, who began a tongue-in-cheek battle with Danbury when he went on an expletive-filled rant against the city on HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" in August. In the August 16 episode, Oliver named off three things he knew about the time, one of which was a "standing invite to come to get a thrashing from John Oliver."Mayor Mark Boughton responded by saying the city was going to rename the plant after Oliver because Oliver was full of the stuff the plant processes. Boughton announced the tongue-in-cheek move in a video posted on his Facebook page."We are going to rename it the John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant," Boughton said in the video while standing in front of the sewage plant.
