How do astronauts go to the bathroom? It’s a question children have wondered for years, and now NASA wants help creating a better way.In a statement posted on their website, NASA is calling on the entire world to submit design concepts for compact toilets that can operate in both microgravity and lunar gravity.NASA is preparing to return to the Moon by 2024 as part of project Artemis, and as they upgrade other aspects of the flight, they are seeking new ideas for toilet facilities when astronauts are in the cabin and out of their spacesuits.Specially-designed toilets exist on the International Space Station already, however according to NASA, they were designed for microgravity only.NASA and HeroX are offering financial and merchandise rewards for winning design concepts in this Lunar Loo contest.Details about how to enter the contest can be found here. 873

I’m absolutely devastated. This is beyond heartbreaking. Chadwick was special. A true original. He was a deeply committed and constantly curious artist. He had so much amazing work still left to create. I’m endlessly grateful for our friendship. Rest in power, King?? pic.twitter.com/oBERXlw66Z— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) August 29, 2020 345

In a crisis, long-term planning may lose out to quick and dirty solutions — regardless of the consequences. As the pandemic and its economic fallout continues, more cash-strapped consumers could fall into this trap if the Great Recession is any indicator.A recent report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found that from 2007 through 2010, debt settlements — which can be financially risky — increased. Meanwhile, credit counseling, a debt relief option that keeps consumers in good standing with their creditors, declined. Before you hit a moment of crisis decision-making, understand how to think through debt relief options. Why debt settlement isn’t all it’s marketed to beYou’ve probably heard the radio ads or maybe received a robocall promising a solution to your debt that can cut what you owe by 50% or more.Debt settlement claims are as lofty as the industry’s marketing budget. But these programs aren’t all they’re hyped up to be — and the ads gloss over the downsides. With debt settlement, you stop making payments to creditors and instead direct your money to the debt settlement company, which holds it in an escrow account. Then, typically after several months, the company contacts your creditors and haggles to cut a deal where the creditor accepts less than originally owed. This period of waiting between when you stop paying creditors and the debt is settled (which isn’t guaranteed) is where things can go awry.“There’s no free lunch,” says Glenn Downing, a Miami certified financial planner. “There really are some significant trade-offs with debt settlement. I’d try to make it a last resort.”Debt settlement risks include:Leaving yourself open to lawsuits: When you stop making payments to creditors and debts go delinquent, you can be sued by the original creditor or by a debt collector who purchases the debt. Until the debt is resolved, either through full payment, settlement or bankruptcy, you’re at risk of being sued.Owing a tax bill: The IRS considers any amount of debt settled as taxable income.Saving less than what was advertised: Debt settlement companies often take a fee of around 30% of your original debt balance. So even if you did settle for 50% of what you originally owed, you won’t come out as far ahead as you might expect after you pay the fee to the settlement company. Additionally, your debt can continue to grow when you stop making payments, as late fees and interest are added to your balance.Credit damage: Missing payments and defaulting on your debts are among the worst things you can do to your credit. These marks stay on your credit reports for around seven years and will make you look risky to future creditors, which can result in you not being approved for credit or having to pay higher interest rates.A better choice for long-term financial healthWhat if there was a way to roll multiple credit card payments into one, at a lower interest rate — while preserving your good standing with your creditors? That’s what nonprofit credit counseling agencies offer. These organizations have arrangements with many credit card companies that provide a lower interest rate in exchange for regular monthly payments over three to five years to resolve your debt. But many consumers aren’t aware of these benefits, according to a 2018 Harris Poll survey commissioned by Money Management International, a nonprofit credit counseling agency. It found that 62% of the 2,012 respondents didn’t know credit counseling can roll multiple credit card debts into one payment. And 73% weren’t aware that credit counseling offers lower interest rates on credit card debt. There are some drawbacks if you use a credit counseling agency’s debt management plan. You typically need a regular income to qualify, and if you miss a payment, the agreement can be dissolved, leaving you to manage on your own.But for the long-term health of your credit profile, credit counseling is the clear winner. This debt relief tool generally keeps consumers in good standing with creditors since they’re making good on their obligations. The only harm to their credit profile would come from closing credit accounts, which some agencies require. To find a reputable nonprofit credit counseling agency, look for one that has been certified by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the Financial Counseling Association of America.Know when a third option might be bestBefore choosing debt settlement or credit counseling, consider whether:You’re barely able to make regular debt payments.Your monthly debt payments — excluding student loans and housing costs — exceed 40% of your take-home pay.Your debt burden is interfering with your quality of life, for instance keeping you up at night. If so, you might want to consider bankruptcy. Although it’s been stigmatized, this debt relief tool can resolve what you owe faster than credit counseling or debt settlement. In addition, credit scores can start to rebound quickly in the months after filing. This article was written by NerdWallet and was originally published by The Associated Press.More From NerdWalletHow Credit Counseling Can Help YouDebt Settlement: How It Works and Risks You FaceWhen Bankruptcy Is the Best OptionSean Pyles is a writer at NerdWallet. In a critical situation where minutes determine life or death, you may think emergency medical services offer your best chance of survival. However, a Johns Hopkins trauma surgeon doesn't think that's always the case.“If it were me, and I know a lot about trauma, drive me to the trauma center as fast as you can,” said Dr. Elliott Haut, associate professor of surgery and emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and senior author of a new study that evaluates emergency transport for shooting and stabbing victims.Haut and colleagues examined data from trauma centers within the 100 most populous U.S. metro areas and compared ambulance versus private vehicle transportation and the relationship between transport-mode and in-hospital mortality. He was not surprised by what he saw.“Patients who are injured with penetrating trauma — so stab wounds and gunshot wounds, in urban settings, so these are in the City — have improved outcomes and improved mortality if they're brought to the trauma center by private vehicle compared to emergency medical services, EMS,” Haut said. The keyword is trauma center; not all hospitals are equipped to handle walk-in patients with these kinds of injuries. And they are injuries that require immediate surgery. The study does not cover cardiac arrest where the most important thing is CPR and a defibrillator.“When we control for all those things, the rapid transport of patients by private vehicle makes a big difference,” Haut said.According to the study, 62 percent of patients are less likely to die when transported by private vehicle compared to EMS.Dr. Gabe Kelen has seen many of these walk-in patients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital emergency department.“You're waiting, waiting, waiting, the ambulance people get there, they do certain things, very skilled, it's all being done out there. Then they load you up, drive through traffic, they get here, that can take twice as long. It sometimes really is better to get you here, let us start doing our more definitive thing that we can do only in the emergency department,” said Kelen, director of the emergency department. He agrees time is of the essence, but also cautions that this is one study.“If you get multiple people being dropped off at one of the smaller hospitals, they may not have the staff to do everything that a place like ours can do so let the system work,” Kelen said. The current standard of care in Maryland is to wait for EMS to arrive. Dr. Richard Alcorta, acting co-executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS), does not support changing the standard. He says not everyone knows where a trauma center is located and EMS can perform certain life-saving procedures that may be crucial before transport. A spokeswoman with the Baltimore Police Department said they do not have a position on the study’s findings and that “preservation of life is paramount." She added that a victim's decision to leave a crime scene "has little if any bearing on the outcome of the investigation. Thanks to video surveillance, CCTV cameras and our crime scene technicians it all seems to work out in the end.” For more information on the study, click here. 3283

Hundreds of passengers on an Amtrak train that became disconnected will have quite a story to tell around the Thanksgiving table. The Montreal to New York train was traveling near Albany, New York, at about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday when two cars separated from the engine, Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said in a statement. Of the 287 passengers and crew, he said, no one was injured. The passengers were transferred to a new train, Abrams said.CNN reached out to Amtrak for further details but has not heard back.Billy Osher-Dugan was traveling to spend Thanksgiving with his girlfriend when he saw the cars separate."It was packed," he said. "There were hardly any seats available."He heard a noise and turned around to see cars behind him rip apart from the train, he said. That's when one passenger pulled the emergency brake to stop the train and others -- upon smelling smoke -- grabbed the fire extinguisher.Luckily, he said, there was no fire and everyone was OK.Helen Mary Crane was with her son on the way to spend the holiday with her daughter. Crane said two cars were added to the train when she boarded in Rensselaer, New York, and that she and her son were told to sit in the first of the additions.Crane's car was one of the two to break off."As far as being with my son," she said. "I was terrified when I saw the sparks and smelled burning and then realized our car was no longer attached. I thought we would derail or be hit by the other train."She said she credits the man who pulled the emergency brake on the runaway cars for the safety of everyone. She identified him as Reuben Clarke, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute."He saved our lives tonight," Crane said. "Our car broke off from the rest of the train and was picking up speed. There was no Amtrak personnel in our car. Reuben calmly went into action and pulled the emergency brake at the front of the car. Thankful he was on the train with my son and I."The National Transportation Safety Board will not investigate since there were no injuries or a derailment, board spokesman Nicholas Worrell said.New York State Police are investigating the incident. 2147
