SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When faced with a hopeless medical diagnosis, a second opinion could save a person's life. Doctors at UC San Diego Health hope to make getting a second opinion easier and more affordable through their new Neurosurgery Second-Opinion Program. "They either feel affirmed in the clinical opinion they've already received or maybe have access to a surgical treatment that might not otherwise be offered to them," said Dr. Alex Khalessi, Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego Health. Through a secure online platform, UC San Diego Health offers easy access to world-renowned neurosurgeons through the program.The service costs patients 0, which Dr. Khalessi says is a few hundred dollars less than other programs nationwide. He says their goal is to make the program accessible to those who need it, even those thousands of miles away. "This is really an opportunity I think to give patients who are dealing with a problem they've never had to think of before a day in their lives, access to a person who spends every day thinking about that problem," said Dr. Khalessi.San Diego resident Glenn Callan credits a second opinion from Dr. Khalessi's team for saving his wife Patricia's life.While in remission for breast cancer doctors at their original San Diego hospital discovered a large tumor in Patricia's brain, but said the tumor was inoperable. "Devastating. You just think you escape this and then have this metastatic cancer go to the brain, it's unbelievable, surreal," said Glenn.Rather than accepting the original diagnosis, the Callan's went to UC San Diego Health, where doctors successfully removed the tumor."Things that would have been a death sentence or permanently disabling even five years ago, now we have a lot of very effective options to treat those problems," said Dr. Khalessi. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made an unpublicized visit to a Poway Unified School District campus on Thursday. DeVos spent about two hours at the Design 39 campus in 4S Ranch, speaking to administrators, teachers, and students. "The questions she was asking kids was, 'Really, tell me about your learning, and what do you really enjoy about learning here? How has this helped you as a learner?'" said Megan Power, a teacher at the school and former Education Department fellow who helped arrange for the visit. DeVos is a polarizing figure in the Trump administration, partially for her stance on school choice. Opponents accuse her of wanting to pull money out of public schools to pay for private education.Poway Unified Superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps posted pictures on Facebook after the visit. Some parents blasted the district for even hosting her. One woman said if she had known she would have protested outside. Another called DeVos dangerous to public education.Other parents disagreed, saying politics aside, her visit was an honor."Just the fact that she came here to visit, someone of that high a profile speaks volumes to the school," said Matt Kolker, who was picking up his son from Design 39 campus Friday. Power, who had told DeVos about Design 39 during her fellowship, said it was a great opportunity."If we want the secretary to have a better understanding of what's going on in schools, we have to be able to invite her and the team into schools," she said. Superintendent Kim-Phelps called DeVos's visit a chance to advocate for the district and public education overall.Design 39 emphasizes design thinking, which it describes as "a creative, problem solving process which helps people design meaningful solutions."In a statement, education Press Secretary Liz Hill called Design 39 "a stellar example of rethinking education to meet the needs of students." High home prices and rising interest rates are expected to slow sales.In our effort to help you find ways to make it in San Diego, 10News discovered a generation of people motivated to sell, and a generation willing to do the work to get a better deal."So, if you think about going into the grocery store and there's a bin of apples, you want to pick the one that's the shiniest right?” says Lisa Becker, a realtor for Keller-Williams. “Our job is to help the sellers spend money strategically and wisely, and yet we have a saying, ‘Don’t step over a dollar bill to pick up a penny.'"Becker encourages sellers not to spend money where it isn't necessary to sell their homes, including her current clients.“They’ve been here for 40 years, they’re in their late 70s,” says Becker. Baby Boomers are the fastest growing generation of sellers. According to Pew Research, 10,000 Baby Boomers retire every day, many with adult children long gone. Now these Boomers are looking to downsize into something more manageable on a fixed income.“They just took ,000 and resurfaced the pool, because the pool needed it,” says Becker showing off the backyard pool. “So, they’re taking care of the property, but this is a reason they want out.”An acre lot is harder to manage for someone in their 70s but might be perfect for a young family looking for their first home. With Boomers, many of the homes are well taken care of and maintained, but the interiors are not always up to modern designs.“So that’s where we come in as the realtor to have them do it in the simplest way possible,” says Becker. “So, when we take down the wallpaper and bring in more contemporary accessories, this kitchen will be absolutely fine. They’ve taken really great care of it, yet it’s still tile counters, and we know the buyer is going to want to put in quartz or granite in here.”No need for a costly upgrade in the kitchen or any other rooms. Instead, Becker and her team will take out all the furniture and stage the entire house.“So, as we go through the home, we’re going to be neutralizing all the paint,” says Becker. That gives the younger buyer a vision of the home’s potential.Repairs that need to be made will be made.“We’re going to come in and get this repaired because it just begs too many questions,” says Becker, pointing out rotting wood on the back patio cover.The goal is to grab the buyer’s attention and allow them to put in some sweat equity after moving in, creating their vision for larger projects like kitchens and master bedrooms.“Buyers' logic makes them think, and emotion makes them act. "So we look out for each other so the idea that someone would come overnight steps from where I sleep, steps from where my kids sleep, you know and try to steal your car, it's angering," David Levine said.An anger that probably won't go away until Levine gets the window on his jeep fixed. "I put tape over it already but there are two big slices here and then a slice here," Levine said.Someone sliced into his 1999 Jeep Wrangler, but Levine knows it could've been much worse."There's bent metal.
