SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local nurses are rallying for more protective equipment at our hospitals. 10News spoke with healthcare workers treating patients with coronavirus who say they're terrified for their own safety. ICU nurse, Michael Kennedy, describes what it's like on the front lines of Covid-19 at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. "As you can imagine it is kind of chaotic," said Kennedy. "We're basically having to beg for masks."He, like many other health care workers, is raising a sobering flag, saying they do not have enough face masks to protect themselves. Kennedy says they've been instructed to wear bandanas instead. USCD nurses held a rally to fight back against the shortage Friday morning. "We’re already rationing supplies and we are not getting the kind of transparency we need from UCSD, from state and local officials about what we have."It's a problem reported nationwide. The demand for personal protective equipment is soaring past supply. Here in San Diego, 10News has covered stories of the community coming together to fix that problem by donating supplies and even sewing together homemade masks. County Supervisor Greg Cox acknowledged the problem at a press conference Thursday. "We had a problem with the N95 masks that were in short supply," said Cox. Kennedy is now hoping the problem doesn't get even worse. "If we experience a surge tomorrow, would we have the kinds of things we need or would we be wearing trash bags?10News reached out to UCSD who provided the following statement from Michelle Brubaker, Associate Director of Communications and Media:"Currently, UC San Diego Health has sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment, including masks and respirators, to meet the needs for patients and health workers alike.But like all health systems across the region and country, we are pursuing every avenue to diversify and increase our supply and to ensure continuing, effective levels of protection, not just in the moment but for weeks and months to come. These efforts are based upon CDC and World Health Organization guidelines regarding PPE use and are in accordance with the California Department of Public Health, San Diego County Public Health and University of California.PPE is available to nurses for any potential COVID-19 patient. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades.The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31.  943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It was an unforgettable Christmas surprise for 30 Tierrasanta elementary school students Friday.Officers from the San Diego Unified Police Department presented them with brand new bicycles.Most of the students from Hancock Elementary are part of military families and have a parent deployed this holiday season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are speaking out more than a week after a bloody melee that injured eight guards at Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa.The violence erupted two Sundays ago, around 4 p.m., inside the recreation yard. Corrections officials say there were about 20 inmates in the yard when one of them attacked a guard. His fellow guards rushed to help. In the mayhem that followed, four inmates allegedly assaulted guards. Six of the guards suffered stab wounds.Christina Armstrong's longtime boyfriend, correctional officer Malcolm Billingsley, was in the middle of it."The best way I hear him describe it is a 'melee, just chaos' ... There was so much going on, it was hard for him to pinpoint each action that was taken," said Armstrong.Corrections officials say a warning shot by one of the guards ended the altercation. As the guards were rushed to hospitals, news filtered out to loved ones."It was frightening not knowing for several hours what was going on. It was terrifying," said Armstrong.Billingsley was not stabbed, but suffered a back injury and possible nerve damage to his hand."It's hard for him to everyday things. He can't take care of our son, let alone play with him. He's in a lot of pain," said Armstrong.His fellow guard Roland Milan was stabbed in the face and suffered a brain bleed. His wife Marcy says he's had four plates inserted into his face."A stab wound to the face, to the mouth area. All his upper teeth were knocked out," she said.Sources say in all, eight guards were injured, including one with a fractured bone in his back.Armstrong says because of an ongoing investigation, she can't reveal details of the melee, but says the guards fought hard for their lives and the lives of their fellow guards."They are all heroes. Malcolm went to work that day to carry out his duty as a correctional officer an he became a victim but his strength and courage allowed him to come home a hero," said Armstrong, choking back tears.Corrections officials say the four inmates could face attempted murder charges.Gofundme campaigns have been set up for both Milan and Billingsley to help with expenses. 2147

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll, more than half of respondents said they supported California's Proposition 13.At least 51 percent of 907 respondents said they intend to vote "yes" for the proposition. Another 32 percent said they plan to vote "no," and 17 percent were not sure how they would vote yet.
