HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A teenager who started the massive Eagle Creek Fire in Oregon has been ordered to pay more than in restitution, according to KOMO.The judge made the decision Monday. The teen’s attorney argued that the massive restitution would violate Oregon and U.S. constitutions because it would inflict “cruel and unusual punishment.”The Eagle Creek Fire started in September of 2017 and destroyed more than 48,000 acres of forest land in the Columbia River Gorge.The teen was 15 at the time of the fire. According to authorities, the teen was tossing fireworks into brush while hiking on the Eagle Creek Trail. One of the fireworks ignited the fire. 670

Giving back to a city that needs it, William Duhon was born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana. After Hurricane Laura hit last month, the town was reeling.“This my city man. This is where I’m from. Grew up not even two miles from here. This is it, so this is where I want to give back to,” said William Duhon.“We’ve been here pretty much everyday since like the 30th. I believe, storm happened on the 27th,” Duhon added.He’s sorting through donations at a community resource center that’s doubling as a makeshift food bank. He is joined by his mom Yolanda and his best friend from high school Kendrick Johnson. They say it's not easy to see the people coming by every day.“Some are like, 'We lost everything,'” said Yolanda Duhon.Everything might somehow be an understatement. William says he comes to volunteer after working the night shift and Kendrick called HIS BOSS on the oil platform and said he couldn’t come back while his community was in need.“I was actually, still had like 14 days left to go and report back to work, but I called my company and told them, hey look, I don’t have any damage to my house but my community is damaged and I can’t sit here and go back to work knowing I could be helping,” said Johnson. Johnson is so close to the Duhons, he's considered family.“This is my adopted son,” said Yolanda.“I’ve ate meals at her house, slept at her house, she picked me up from band practice before, I mean the list goes on, basically extended family. Basically they don’t look at me as a best friend, I’m part of their family,” said Johnson. This unconventional family is working hard to make sure people in Lake Charles have what they need to survive. It’s worth every minute for them.“It’s like handing them a box of hope. (AP) — The man who killed four people and wounded two others in random stabbings across two Southern California cities is a gang member with a violent criminal record who had served time in prison, authorities said Thursday.Zachary Castaneda "could have injured or killed many other people" had he not been arrested Wednesday while carrying out attacks and robberies during the two-hour wave of violence that began in Garden Grove, the city's police Chief Tom DaRe said.It wasn't immediately known if Castaneda, 33, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.Castaneda was taken into custody when he walked out of a convenience store in the neighboring city of Santa Ana, dropping a knife and a gun he had taken from a security guard he had just killed, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said.Castaneda was kept in restraints as detectives tried to interview him, the chief said at a press conference."He remained violent with us through the night," DaRe said. "He never told us why he did this."Castaneda has a conviction for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle, DaRe said. Investigators were still putting together his entire criminal history, he said. The father said his passport, green card, sword collection and even a dining table were taken.Erwin Hauprich said his father never called back and he went to check on him after hearing there had been a stabbing at the complex.A police officer told him that Helmuth Hauprich had been taken to the hospital, where he died, the son said. He said he was told his father's roommate was killed in the apartment.A body was removed from the complex by stretcher Thursday.Erwin Hauprich said his father left Romania first for Germany and then the United States more than two decades ago. He ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about 0, she said."I saved myself because I was in the car," she said in Spanish on Thursday. "Thank God I am alive."The man also robbed an insurance business, where a 54-year-old employee was stabbed several times and was expected to survive.The woman "was very brave," Whitney said.
