BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday sent a message of condolences to his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano over the heavy loss of life and property in a deadly earthquake that struck central Italy.     In the message, Hu expressed condolences to the victims and their families and those affected by the earthquake on behalf of the Chinese government and people as well as in his own name.     Hu believed that, under the leadership of Napolitano and the Italian government, the Italian people will overcome the difficulties arising from the quake and restore the normal life and work in the quake-affected areas at an early date.     A powerful earthquake hit central Italy early Monday, killing 207 people, injuring about 1,500 and leaving around 70,000 homeless, said the latest reports.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao also sent messages of condolences to Italian Senate Speaker Renato Schifani, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Gianfranco Fini and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, respectively.

JINAN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Tuesday urged local governments to support spring ploughing work to promote grain production.     Speaking at a national meeting held by the State Council (Cabinet) in Jinan, capital city of eastern China's Shandong Province, on Monday and Tuesday, Hui called for great efforts to support the harvest of summer grain and oil crops.     He called on local authorities to give priority to spring farm work, maintain steady and relatively fast rural and agricultural development, help farm incomes rise and improve water conservation in rural areas.     He urged authorities to provide agricultural science and technology services to farmers, strengthen pest and animal disease controls, help farmers rise out of poverty and provide more jobs for returning migrants.     China harvested 528.5 billion kilograms of grain last year, up 5.4 percent from 2007, the fifth consecutive increase.

TOKYO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met late Monday with executives of major Japanese media, urging media of both countries to make due contributions to the advancement of Sino-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said that both Chinese and Japanese media need to adopt a responsible attitude to report issues concerning bilateral relations and situations of their respective countries in line with the principle of authenticity, objectivity and comprehensiveness in a bid to promote mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples.     The media should also proceed from the general situation of Sino-Japan relations to boost mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas, focusing more on news reports that are beneficial to closer bilateral cooperation and providing more information that is conducive to China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations, he said.     Exchanges and cooperation between the media of the two nations, such as "Beijing-Tokyo Forum" and "China-Japan Media Dialogue", help to establish new channels and forms for frank, in-depth and rational dialogues as well as a platform for the two peoples to deepen their mutual understanding, he said.     Executives of key Japanese media such as public broadcaster NHK,TV Asahi, The Yumiuri Shimbun, Kyodo News Agency said that it is the common aspiration of both peoples as well as their historical responsibility to promote the steady and sustained growth of Japan-China relations.     They also made proposals on advancing exchanges between media of the two countries, expanding bilateral cooperation on economy and trade and improving feelings the two peoples harbor toward each other.     On Tuesday, Li visited the headquarters of The Yumiuri Shimbun and NHK, inquiring in detail about the management and operation of the two Japanese media.     Li arrived here Sunday for an official goodwill visit. BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has called for offices at all levels responsible for the research of the history of Communist Party of China (CPC) to play a more important role in improving the Party's ruling abilities.     Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting attended by officials in charge of the Party history research offices at the provincial level on Wednesday.     Xi urged the Party committees to provide financial and human resource support for those offices and encouraged Party history researchers to play stronger role in education among the Party members.     The Vice President said Party history research organs should take the opportunity in the year of 2009 when the People's Republic of China celebrates the 60th anniversary of founding.     Xi stressed that the offices should promote the Party's ruling abilities and solidify the CPC's status as the governing party.
