SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of robbing a Cherokee Point smoke shop at knifepoint, police said.The robbery was reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday at MA Smoke Shop, 3543 University Ave., San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The suspect, later identified as Mario Chavez, walked into the smoke shop and selected several items from a display, the officer said.He then allegedly walked up to the clerk holding a knife and demanded a lighter, Heims said. The clerk contacted police while the suspect was standing at the counter, then officers arrived a short time later and arrested Chavez, who was still in the store.Chavez was booked into San Diego Central Jail around 3:40 a.m. Friday on suspicion of robbery, according to jail records. 799

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Mission Valley West, authorities said this morning.The crash occurred in the 6700 block of Friars Road at 5 p.m. Friday, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The man was driving a 2014 Chevy Malibu and making a left turn onto Friars Road from his apartment complex when a 33-year-old woman driving a 2020 Tesla Model Y crashed into the Malibu. The man sustained fatal injuries and his 22-year-old wife, who was a passenger in the car, sustained minor injuries, Heims said.No other injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A tech worker was charged Wednesday with murder and kidnapping in the death of a Utah college student whose body was found in a wooded area with her arms bound behind her.Prosecutors said Ayoola A. Ajayi, 31, was the last person Mackenzie Lueck communicated with before she disappeared on June 17.She died of blunt force trauma to the head, and her body was found with her arms bound with zip ties and ropes, District Attorney Sim Gill said while announcing the charges.He declined to discuss a motive or the nature of the connection between Lueck and Ajayi. He also didn't say what kind of weapon was used.Gill became emotional as he described the Lueck family's reaction to the charges. "They asked me to express on their behalf the generosity of so many strangers and friends," he said. "They are genuinely appreciative and moved by the outpouring of love and compassion."Lueck disappeared shortly after she returned from a trip to her California hometown for the funeral of her grandmother and took a Lyft from the airport to a park.She exchanged text messages with Ajayi and met him there, apparently willingly, but her phone was turned off a minute after the last text "and never powered back on," Gill said.Police later found the charred phone in the backyard of Ajayi's home in Salt Lake City, along with a bone, muscle tissue and part of Lueck's scalp, Gill said.A neighbor reported a fire and a "horrible smell" coming from the yard on the day Lueck disappeared, Gill said.Her body was later discovered in a shallow grave in Logan Canyon, 85 miles (138 kilometers) from Salt Lake City. The site is near Utah State University, where Ajayi had attended classes.Gill said phone data puts him at the canyon a week after Lueck disappeared. Police obtained a search warrant for his home the next day.Ajayi was arrested June 28 during the wide-ranging search for the 23-year-old University of Utah student that lasted nearly two weeks. Prosecutors did not strike a deal with Ajayi to find her, Gill said.Ajayi was charged with one count each of aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a human body. A court appearance was set for Monday.Ajayi is represented by the public defender's office, which has refused to comment on the case.The charges make Ajayi eligible for the death penalty, but Gill did not say whether prosecutors would pursue it.Lueck has been remembered as a bubbly, nurturing person.
