ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A private elementary school in the North County is hoping an extensive safety plan could help secure a waiver to reopen the school in mid-August.When Governor Newsom issued his order stopping in-person schooling for counties on the watch list, plans to reopen came to a sudden halt. Amanda Johnston is principal at St. Mary's School in Escondido, a Catholic K-8 school. School officials started developing the plan in April. It includes limiting enrollment, which now stands at about 170 students. That will allow the school to social distance in each classroom."We can fit 18 to 22 students depending on the room, and each student has at least six feet of space in all directions," said Johnston.Within the room, each desk will contain plexiglass desk shields."24 inches tall and three sides. No matter which direction they're looking, they are protected," said Johnston.Other protective measures include deep cleanings at the end of each day, sanitizing surfaces throughout the day and hand washing stations.Teachers will wear face shields. Masks are mandatory for students in the third grade and higher. Masks will be strongly encouraged for younger children.Teachers will rotate in, while students most stay put, except for breaks and outdoor lessons."We're really appreciative of the fact there is going to be a potential waiver to reopen," said Johnston.Johnston is hoping the school's plans will help them secure an exemption. The state has said public school districts and private schools can seek a waiver from county health officers to reopen elementary schools."We definitely plan to take all the necessary steps once we understand all the criteria and the process," said Johnston.As the school awaits that guidance, the work continues. Underway now: a deep cleaning of the classrooms."Everything we have done had been to make sure when students return to campus, it is safe for everyone involved," said Johnston.The school is set to begin its school year August 19. 2012

(KGTV) - A set of triplets took sibling rivalry to new heights in this year's spelling bee at O'Farrell Charter School.Seventh graders Miguel, Maya and Mia Brizuela finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in the school competition, respectively. Miguel advanced to the County-wide bee, held Thursday at Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley."I'm very good at grammar, so it's really easy for me," says Miguel, when asked how he managed to win. But he also admits he got help from his sister, Maya."We were going back and forth, back and forth. And then, finally, Maya just decided to give up because she said that she didn't want to go to the county," he says.Maya confirmed the story that she let her brother win."Like, 1% of me wanted to win," she says. "But I have stage fright. I didn't want to go up there in the auditorium and spell words in front of a lot of people," she says.But it's Mia, who finished 4th at the school, who believes she's the best speller of the three."I felt like I needed to raise myself to their level of spelling," she says of her finish in the competition. "And I like to correct their grammar a lot."The three say they practice by holding mini-spelling bees at home, where their parents give them words to spell. They also study for 1-2 hours each night before bed.Now that Miguel had advanced to the County-wide competition, his sisters say they'll be there to cheer for him."He's my brother, I love him," says Maya. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) – Police in Escondido have identified the suspect shot and killed by an officer at Valley View Casino Saturday night as Osbaldo Ramirez Jimenez, 50.The incident began after police received a domestic disturbance call on the 1400 block of Timber Glen Road in Escondido.When they arrived, police say the suspect got into a vehicle and led them on a chase that ended at the casino’s valet entrance.RELATED: Officer-involved shooting reported at Valley View Casino in North San Diego County?When Jimenez got out of the vehicle, police say they noticed he was holding a handgun when the officer-involved shooting took place. Jimenez was taken to the hospital where he later died. Authorities also identified the officer involved in the shooting as Officer Terrence Pizzuti, who they say has been with the department since 2013.The incident reportedly caused chaos inside the casino. One woman inside at the time of the shooting was trampled. She was taken to the hospital where she is expected to survive.The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido has been quiet since mid-March, when they had to close their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic."It's been hard, and in the beginning, it was very eerie," said museum Executive Director Wendy Taylor.Normally, the museum plays host to a few hundred visitors every day, and on a busy day, that number may reach as high as 500 guests.However, for the last four months, the museum has been nothing more than the sound of silence. In fact, over the last month, when other museums were allowed to reopen their doors, the Children's Discovery Museum did not."We don't really fall into the traditional museum category in terms of the reopening. Kids’ museums are specifically called out in the state guidelines as not being a traditional museum. So, in the guidelines for museums, it specifically calls out that interactive areas should remain closed,” Taylor said.Taylor told ABC 10News she's very proud of the way the museum has adjusted during these uncertain times. They've had to become more creative in all their activities, from camps to storytelling, and everything has gone online."Families really needed some support. They needed something regular and normal, that their kids could see and engage in,” said Taylor.Storytime has been very popular with the children, as the museum receives viewers from all over the world. The numbers have been so impressive, as they reach thousands of views per story."Typically, every story time reaches thousands of people during the course of the 24 hours that it is up,” Taylor said.The museum also had a virtual art contest where a winner was announced on Facebook Live. (KGTV) - People who own chickens in the North County are taking extra precautions to protect their flocks, as a deadly bird disease creeps closer to San Diego County.The California Department of Food and Agriculture issued aquarantine for birds in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties after reports of the disease. With all three counties surrounding San Diego, officials here have issued warnings to chicken owners to look out for symptoms.According to the San Diego County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures, symptoms include:Sudden death and increased death loss in flock.Sneezing, gasping for air, nasal discharge, coughing.Greenish, watery diarrhea.Decreased activity, tremors, drooping wings, twisting of head and neck, circling, complete stiffness.Swelling around the eyes and neck.They say anyone who sees these symptoms in their birds should contact the CDFA Bird Hotline at at 866-922-BIRD. 953
