ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Saturday, kicking off his three-day official visit to Greece.The Greece visit, the first stop of Wen's four-nation Europe tour, is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.During his stay, Premier Wen is due to meet Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Parliament Speaker Philippos Petsalnikos and hold talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou before witnessing the signing of a series of deals. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept.10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday, the nation's Teachers' Day, called on teachers to dedicate themselves to rural education, improving teaching standards and contributing to the modernization of the country's education program.Wen made those remarks during a visit to a middle school in Xinglong County of north China's Hebei Province, which is about 135 km from Beijing.Teachers play a key role in primary education, which lays the foundation for a country's development, Wen said, adding that Chinese teachers had made contributions to the country's education cause and modernization drive through hard work and selfless devotion.Wen stressed it was important to improve rural education as it is a matter concerning the long-term development of rural areas and the improvement of people's skills.Persistent efforts would be made to ensure students in rural areas have universal access to schooling and modern education, he said.In 2007, China decided to waive tuition fees for students training to become teachers at six top teaching universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Wuhan, Xi'an and Chongqing.To be eligible for free tuition, the student must agree to work at a primary or middle school for at least ten years after graduation and spend the first two years in a rural school.The first group of students who enrolled under the tuition-free program are scheduled to graduate next summer.Eight students from the Beijing Normal University who are in the program joined Wen in his visit to the rural school Friday.Wen urged the students from the university to develop a better understanding of China's rural area, contribute to rural education and help build their hometowns into better places after graduation.The premier asked them to make rural education their career and prepare themselves for hardships and challenges.He said the government would continue its support to the program of tuition-free education for normal school teachers and provide them with opportunities of receiving further education and grant favorable policies in employment.

BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang has urged the country' s anti-graft officials to make more efforts to solve prominent corruption-related problems by taking into account the views of the public.He, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made his remarks at an anti-corruption work conference Saturday.He called for more effective anti-corruption efforts to win the trust of the public while promoting social harmony.He also stressed better enforcement of laws and Party discipline, along with relentless punishment of any violation.According to a statement released after the conference, the country's public spending on government officials' overseas visits, transportation and official receptions this year was reduced by 5.75 billion yuan (858 million U.S. dollars) from last year in a campaign to cut extravagant public spending.Anti-corruption departments have also launched a nationwide examination into the problem of "little coffers", which are private accounts for extracting public funds. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday.The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization.He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast.
