BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said here on Thursday that the country will push forward educational reform to promote educational equity and quality.     Liu made the remarks while inspecting the Central University for Nationalities and the Beijing Language and Culture University.     Liu praised the Central University for Nationalities for their contribution to ethnic unity and the development of ethnic areas. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lu Zhengcao, the last one of New China's first 57 generals, was cremated here Tuesday. Lu died of illness on Oct. 13 at the age of 106. Chinese President Hu Jintao, former president Jiang Zemin, and other senior leaders including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the cremation ceremony, which was held Tuesday morning at the hall of the Beijing Babaoshan Cemetery.     In 1955, the People's Republic of China (PRC) first adopted the military ranks and 55 senior officers were granted generals. Two more joined them in 1956 and 1958 respectively. They witnessed the development of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the founding of the PRC in 1949.     Born in Haicheng of northeastern Liaoning Province, Lu joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1937 and fought in China's war of resistance against Japanese invasion from 1937 to 1945 and the civil war against the Kuomintang (KMT) army from 1945 to 1949. BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- China has tightened settlement and sale of foreign exchange by individuals to curb non-normal cross-border capital inflow, according to a statement of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE).     Banks should deny, review or report to foreign exchange regulators, individual purchases or settlements of foreign exchange suspicious of splitting up one deal into several smaller ones to dodge limits on the size of exchange transfer by one person, which is understood to be one of the channels for hot money inflow, said the statement on Wednesday.     Practices including one overseas individual or institution remitting foreign exchange to five or more individuals within China who settle them respectively, or five or more individuals buying foreign exchange and remitting them to one and the same overseas individual or institution, on a single day, every other day or consecutive days, are considered exchange splitting behavior, said the SAFE.     China in 2007 set the limit of up to 50,000 U.S. dollars per year for an individual to exchange between yuan and foreign exchange.

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for more efforts to optimize land use in order to save resources and further economic restructuring.     Li made the remarks during an inspection to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR). As the most populous country in the world, China has been faced with shortages of land, water, energy and minerals, and the shortages were worsened by rapid economic growth, he said.
