SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite skyrocketing prices, San Diego’s housing inventory is up in 2018, according to a new report by Trulia. The trend in America’s Finest City sits opposite the national trend, which is seeing a declining inventory. The national drop in inventory in the fourth quarter of 2018 was mainly driven by a drop in for-sale homes, however, in San Diego, the total for-sale inventory rose by more than 27 percent. San Diego’s trade-up inventory saw the largest increase at more than 46 percent. The report points out that, despite inventory gains in San Diego, prices continue to rise, outpacing wage growth. The trend places homeownership out of reach for many first-time homebuyers. And what an exciting times it is, as the centerpiece of the plans includes a brand new stadium. "It will become the signature project that defines the future. Not only for SDSU, but for higher education in California," says San Diego State President Adela de la Torre.The project will include an innovative educations district, 86 acres of land used for a park and recreation, affordable housing, a hotel, and of course, a 35 thousand seat stadium "I can't wait to see the team run on to Basher field and enjoy the cheers of 35 thousand fans,"says de la Torre.Equally excited is Aztecs Director of Athletics JD Wicker."We are building a stadium for Aztecs football, international and professional soccer, concerts, and any other event you can think of. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighting cameras are blanketing California, shattering its goal of installing 650 cameras across California by 2022, thanks to the efforts of a UC San Diego professor and his team.The camera system, called ALERTWildfire, came from a need to confirm the ignition of a fire, and coordinate assets to be the most efficient and safe for the community.Geology Professor Neal Driscoll at UC San Diego is the Co-Director of ALERTWildfire and said just a couple of years ago it was a slow process confirming a fire sparked in the county."We’d have to send an engine to a mountaintop or launch an aircraft to verify ignition," Driscoll said.That wasted valuable time. ALERTWildfire allows fire command centers to find and assess a blaze with a few clicks on a computer.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said they look for key information from the cameras, "really just trying to hone in on where this fire is, what its potential is and who might need to be evacuated."The system launched in 2017 and now San Diego has 35 cameras across the county.The cameras pan, tilt and zoom on command and have a time-lapse function."The technology isn’t just good situational awareness, it’s also using that data and that information in real-time to evacuate people and save some more lives," Shoots said.Driscoll said they are continuing to grow the program, "locally I think we’ll cap out at 45-50."Shoots said they're working to grow to more than 1,000 cameras across the state by 2022 and Driscoll hopes to expand to other states like Colorado and Idaho.Driscoll advises the public to get familiar with the website, so in case of an emergency, you can be aware of your surroundings and evacuate safely.Driscoll also advised the public to RAP: Reduce risk, Activate your alerts, and Practice your plan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From in-person instruction to distance learning, and now hybrid classes in some cases, most school districts have been through a lot during this pandemic.Many parents have decided to turn to charter schools, which have excelled in distance learning for years.A spokesperson for the California Charter Schools Association said they’ve heard from non-classroom based charters in San Diego County that are seeing substantial enrollment requests this academic year.Some of the charter schools have taken on many new students, while others had to stop enrollment due to the lack of state funding.“In the beginning, a lot of big districts were not providing any resources, the kids were just off,” said Kathleen Hermsmeyer, the superintended of Springs Charter Schools.Springs Charter Schools has locations across Southern California, including in Vista and Chula Vista in San Diego County.“We’ve been in business doing this type of distance learning education for 20 years, so for us, this was not a big transition,” she said in regards to education during the pandemic.“We already had all of our technology, our learning management system, our systems down for distance learning, so it wasn’t a big transition.”Hermsmeyer said the students new missed a day of class during the pandemic, and early on, Springs Charter Schools enrolled an additional 130 students in San Diego before they knew they wouldn’t be receiving extra state funding.“The school year starts for us July 1, we didn’t find out until June 28 that we were not going to get funded for those students,” she explained. “They did say we can disenroll the kids, but we’re not going to do that, that’s not kind, that’s not a service to the community.”Right now, she said about 7,000 students remain on the Springs Charter Schools waitlist across California, with nearly 1,000 in San Diego County. Hermsmeyer said that’s about four times more than last school year.“We can’t accept the students because there has been a cap on growth for non-classroom based charters like ours,” she said.“Parents were clamoring to get into our schools, and we couldn’t enroll them, so we wanted to provide something because parents were crying on the phone, it was a really hard crazy time, and parents wanted to keep their children moving academically.”Springs Valley Schools then launched “Open Classroom,” an online website providing free lessons for students K through 12 at home.“We had thousands of people all across the whole world using our free classroom,” she said.Springs Charter Schools received an award from the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools for going above and beyond during the pandemic.Hermsmeyer said Springs Charter Schools, along with a few other charters, are in a legal battle with the state over the lack of funding to enroll new students.Springs Charter Schools expects to start bringing back some students for in-person learning by the end of the month, with a full distance learning option still available.The California Department of Education is tracking statewide enrollment numbers for charter schools and traditional schools and will release the numbers for the 2020-21 academic year in March. 3205
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Even though many local businesses have struggled amid the pandemic and San Diego County saw an unprecedented spike in unemployment in the second quarter, there has not been a significant jump in the number of empty retail storefronts -- at least not yet.The vacancy rate in San Diego County ticked up slightly to 5.6 percent in the second quarter, according to an analysis by commercial real estate firm CBRE.Vacancies tend to be a lagging indicator. Large national chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Pier 1 Imports have announced closures in recent weeks, but the businesses are still occupying their commercial spaces. 24 Hour Fitness is closing four clubs in San Diego County. Pier 1 Imports is closing all 11 of its local stores; four of those locations have already closed.While vacancies take time, the pandemic has slowed the region’s commercial real estate market in other ways, said CBRE Associate Field Research Director Michael Combs.New leasing activity in the retail sector dropped to nearly a 10-year low in the second quarter, down nearly 50 percent from the first three months of 2020.“There just haven't been a lot of new deals as tenants especially in retail are waiting to see how this situation plays out,” he said.The slowdown in new leasing activity may be a sign that companies are holding off on plans to expand operations, since new leases with larger footprints are typically signed far in advance. 1448
