Dr. Deborah Birx, a key member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, sent a sharply-worded memo to the administration over her concerns about the rise in coronavirus cases, the New York Times and Washington Post reported on Monday.The memo comes as confirmed coronavirus cases are at record levels in the US. Cases in recent weeks have risen sharply, and a rise in hospitalizations have corresponded in recent days. Johns Hopkins University data shows cases are especially high through the middle of the US.In the memo obtained by the Washington Post and New York Times, Birx said that “aggressive action” is needed. While many states implemented shutdowns in the spring as cases surged, especially in the northeast, Birx was not calling for economic shutdowns in her memo.“This is not about lockdowns — It hasn’t been about lockdowns since March or April. EL CAJON (CNS) - Murder and attempted murder charges were filed Friday against a man accused of shooting two men in El Cajon earlier this year, killing one of them.Roberto Hernandez, 26, faces 59 years to life in state prison if convicted of the charges stemming from the March 20 shooting that killed James Bowens, 20, and injured another 20-year-old man, both El Cajon residents, according to Deputy District Attorney Clayton Carr.Police said officers responded just before 8 p.m. to reports of gunshots in the area of 700 Applewood Drive. Witnesses said "a confrontation had taken place in the street near the intersection of Applewood Drive and Cedar Street," according to El Cajon police.Bowens died at a hospital of at least one gunshot to his upper body and the other man was shot in the leg, police said.A suspected motive for the shooting, and the relationship, if any, between Hernandez and the victims, was not disclosed.Hernandez, who entered a not guilty plea, is being held without bail and is due back in court June 29, according to county jail records. 1076

(KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school. The two them moved to Arizona in March. Her boyfriend is accused of killing and leaving Bergman in the Arizona desert."That's what breaks my heart. Now, the future of the biggest shopping discount day of the year is unknown.Yes, it will still happenFor many, shopping on the day after Thanksgiving is a tradition. Historically, it’s also one of the best days of the year to save money on big-ticket items like electronics and appliances.But with social distancing the norm, it’s hard to imagine shoppers camping out on the sidewalk next to one another this year ahead of Nov. 27. It’s even more difficult to picture stores overflowing with excited shoppers.Retail experts believe Black Friday will still happen in 2020, despite the pandemic. But there’s no disputing the fact that it won’t be a traditional experience.“Being there at the crack of dawn, waiting in lines, the hustle and bustle in the store — that’s probably not going to exist,” says Jane Boyd Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University in South Carolina who has done research about Black Friday.Sales will shift further onlineFor years, Black Friday has shifted to online channels, merging with Cyber Monday into a weekend-long event. The pandemic is set to further cement that transition.After months of shelter-in-place orders, consumers have become more comfortable shopping from home. That will likely lead to an increase in online Black Friday purchases this year, says Dora Bock, associate professor of marketing at the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University in Alabama.But the changes could go a step beyond that. COVID-19 has illuminated failings in the supply chain, and Thomas believes many consumers will opt for contactless curbside pickup options (as opposed to shipping to their home) to guarantee that the items they’re buying online are actually available — and not out of stock.Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean stores will be ghost towns.“They want something normal,” Thomas says of some shoppers. “I do think that will drive people to go in to see the lights, to see the trees — all the stuff that goes with that experience.”Doorbusters could be deepEven though the experience will look different, Black Friday discounts might be particularly relevant this year, especially as millions of Americans have faced unemployment and other financial hardships in 2020.While consumers have largely focused on purchasing essential items during the pandemic, Bock anticipates competitive prices on discretionary products like apparel and jewelry.Consumers might also have an appetite for traditional Black Friday categories, such as computers. After all, retailers are still figuring out how to market the holiday shopping season.One possibility? Black Friday may become an extended period, rather than a single day of sales, says Michael Brown, a partner in the consumer practice of Kearney, a global strategy and management consultant.“I’m expecting that Black Friday as we have grown to know it cannot exist in a COVID world,” Brown says.“I think we have to really not think about Black Friday and think more about when the launch of the holiday season will begin.
