BETHANY, Mo. — Nearly every school in the Kansas City area requires students and staff to wear masks on campus. But that's not the case across the state of Missouri. As of early December, none of the five districts in Harrison County, Missouri — located about 90 minutes northeast of Kansas City — had required masks, but that's soon changing."We have several students, several faculty and staff, that decide to wear a mask," said Dennis Eastin, the superintendent at South Harrison R-II in Bethany. "It is personally up to them."Signs around the campus encourage the use of masks, but the school board decided not to require a mask mandate at the beginning of the school year. Eastin said that decision has been revisited at board meetings, but not changed. Eastin said he hears from parents who support the lack of a mandate, and parents who wish the school would install one."Both are justified in their argument," Eastin said. "I would say there's a difference of opinion out there."Members of the school board have shared their opinions, too. School Board Vice President C.F. Rainey has multiple posts on his personal Facebook page that criticize mask-wearing and public lockdowns. Rainey declined to comment publicly but did say he would allow data that he posted on his Facebook page to stand on its own. Four other members of the school board did not respond to interview requests.South Harrison has roughly 1,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Harrison County's Health Department said that 487 students and faculty have been put under quarantine and/or isolation as of Dec. 2. That number includes students who have had multiple quarantines, and it includes Eastin. Eastin said the largest number of students quarantined at one time happened in November. Roughly 60 students on the 3 and 4-year-old campuses had to stay home for more than two weeks because a staff member had an issue with COVID-19. "I'm supposed to check my kids' temperature every day before they go to school," Cassi Deskins, a South Harrison parent, said. "Do you think that 95% of the parents are doing that? Absolutely not."Deskins is a nurse practitioner in Harrison County who regularly sees COVID-19 patients. Her children wear masks when they go to South Harrison Elementary. "I work in Gilman City, which is a very small community," Deskins said. "There's one clinic. I don't have the option to stay home with my children. My husband is also an essential worker."Deskins said parents in the district are frustrated with how often their children have to quarantine."One of my best friends' daughter has been out four times," Deskins said. "She was on three, two-week quarantines, and then has been on a 10-day quarantine."But she still doesn't expect the school board to institute a mask mandate."I would be thoroughly surprised if there's a mask mandate of South Harrison Schools," Deskins said. But as of Thursday, Dec. 10, the Harrison County Health Department Board had voted to implement a county-wide mask policy. That new policy, which goes into effect on Dec. 17, will require the county's school districts to comply."Listening to the data, they say the safest place for our kids is in the school building," Eastin said. "And schools should be open, and that's what we're planning to do."Eastin said that the district has spent more than ,000 this year on technology upgrades, including hot spots that families are able to check out when their children are forced to learn from home. He said roughly 45 students chose distance learning full time. This story was originally published by Taylor Hemness on KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 3652

Ben Watkins died at the age of 14 from a rare form of cancer, after capturing the country’s attention in 2018 competing on MasterChef Junior.Watkins reportedly died in a Chicago area children’s hospital Monday, according to the family’s attorney. Watkins had a rare illness called Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma. Only six people in the world have been diagnosed with it, according to the family.“Our Ben went home to be with his mother this afternoon after a year-and-a-half-long battle with Cancer. After losing both of his parents in September 2017, we have marveled at Ben’s strength, courage and love for life. He never, ever complained. Ben was and will always be the strongest person we know,” reads a statement from the family on a GoFundMe page for Watkins.Shortly before Watkins’ appearance on MasterChef, when he was just 11 years old, his parents both died in a murder-suicide in 2017. He was cared for by an uncle and family members, according to reports.Just after his 13th birthday, Watkins was diagnosed with the rare cancer, with a soft tissue tumor. Chef Gordon Ramsay posted his tribute to the young chef on social media. Ramsay hosted the cooking competition show, and worked with Watkins in season 6.“Ben you were an incredibly talented home cook and even stronger young man. BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- There are invaders in Gulf waters, and researchers at Florida Gulf Coast University are working to find out more about them, so they can be stopped. Invasive exotic Lionfish are native to the Pacific Ocean. But they're now appearing more frequently in the Gulf where they have no known predators.FGCU Marine Scientist Mike Parsons said the growing lionfish population is threatening to crowd out the native species so many Southwest Floridians love to catch and eat."They're competing with other fish for places to live and food to eat," Parsons said."So they'll be bad for other fish like grouper, for example." he added.Parsons and other researchers are looking for solutions as they closely study lionfish at FGCU's Vester Marine Science Field station in Bonita Springs. Researcher Emma DeRoy said part of the problem is that lionfish can live in every part of the Gulf."They're habitat generalists," said DeRoy, whose work at Vester Field Station focuses on lionfish. "They'll thrive in sea grass, mangroves, corals - anything with structure."DeRoy said lionfish also tend to eat the small fish that eat algae off coral.  If those small fish aren't around, there's nothing protecting living coral from all that algae."Then the algae overgrows the coral and basically suffocates it," she says.  "And then you get coral dying off."She says lionfish also grow up faster than local species like grouper - giving them a head start on establishing themselves in a habitat and eating whatever they want. Lionfish mature within a year, whereas grouper take around 4-to-5 years, DeRoy said. "I think the other big factor is they re-produce so often and they produce so many eggs," Parsons said "Their population can just explode." Parsons estimated their reproductive rate to be astronomical."Somewhere on the order of 2 million eggs per female every time they spawn," says Parsons. "And they may spawn multiple times per year.""That's a lot of youngin's," he adds.Charter boat captain Billy D'Antuono said huge numbers of lionfish are being hauled in from the northern Gulf off the panhandle of Florida."They'll go and clean off a spot and get 500, and they'll go back the next week and there's 500 more," says D'Antuono."They're bringing back thousands of them in a day," he adds. Some say the biggest hope for getting the lionfish population under control is human consumption."The one good thing is they are a delicious fish," says Parsons."Lion fish are just very good to eat," says D'Antuono. "You can eat it as sushi," he added.D'Antuono is quick to point out lionfish are not poisonous - just venomous. He said that distinction matters."The venom is only in the spine, so the meat is very good," he says.  "It's one my favorite fish to eat."More Florida restaurants are now selling lionfish, and more stores (Whole Foods for example) are selling it at prices that create financial incentive for the commercial fishing industry."It's the same level as grouper prices, a pound," D'Antuono said.D'Antuono is hoping to generate more interest in hunting lionfish by posting videos of his spearfishing adventures on his website. As researchers look for ways to get the lionfish population under control, they're calling on you to do your part. When Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers asked Parsons what people should do if they see a lionfish, he response is simple but direct. "Kill it," he says.  "And then eat it. Remove it from the environment." D'Antuono recommended killing lionfish carefully, though, because their spines are venomous.D'Antuono said he has been stung before and described the pain as memorable.  "It's like someone putting a nail in your hand and somebody slamming the nail in your hand for about two hours," he says. "It's very painful."But he said he fears the bigger pain lionfish will inflict will be on the fragile ecosystem in our Gulf. "They've invasive," he said. "Over the years, these fish could be the only thing left."D'Antuono is encouraging others to join him in spearfishing lionfish. He even organizes tournaments - telling WFTX he's hoping the next one will be this summer at Three 60 Market in Naples. 4363

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- New jailhouse pictures that appear to glorify and praise the man accused of murdering Boone County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Pickett have appeared on the internet."Outright despicable. It makes me sick to my stomach that this can reach social media," said Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen. The pictures show 21-year-old Anthony Baumgardt and his fellow inmates laughing and posing."He's not only celebrating with people in jail. I don't know if he is celebrating the crime, but it doesn't seem to bother him. That is what hurts me the most. That is what hurts people who have seen this," said Sheriff Nielsen. One image even describes Baumgardt as a "Hoosier Hero"."I don't like hearing that. It makes me uncomfortable. Because I don't know why anyone would call him a hero," said Sydnie Graves, Boone County resident."I'm kinda old school. It breaks my heart," said Mike Holt, Boone County resident.Baumgardt is behind bars in Hamilton County. According to the sheriff there, people visit inmates by video and they can share pictures with those they visit with."He has rights we have to honor like we have to honor with any other pre-trial inmate. We are gonna monitor the situation. Monitor Mr. Baumgardt's activities," said Hamilton County Sheriff Mike Bowen.Baumgardt's attorney, Allan Reid, told Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis, "It is not mature, respectful behavior considering the tragic circumstances of this case. And I will talk to him about it."Baumgardt is being held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail. His next pre-trial hearing is May 16.READ | Anthony Baumgardt: "No remorse" for what happened to Deputy Pickett, man he's accused of shooting | Father of deputy shooting suspect says it "was a monster" who shot Deputy Pickett?| Court records detail Deputy Pickett suspects' criminal history  1900
