SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old has been arrested after being shot by a store clerk he was trying to rob, San Diego Police say.According to police, Hector Lopez-Gastelum entered the La Michoacana store on the 700 block of Vesta Street around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 demanding cash. Police say Lopez-Gastelum was armed with a handgun.After the clerk handed over the cash, the suspect reportedly demanded that a second register be opened.“While Lopez-Gastelum was still in the store, the clerk shot him twice in the torso with his own handgun, which is legally owned,” police said.The clerk then retrieved Lopez-Gastelum’s handgun and called 911. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2015 trip Duncan Hunter and his family reportedly took to Italy was a personal vacation unrelated to his work as a member of Congress, according to new court documents. The documents state that Hunter proposed and then canceled a visit to a base in or around Naples, Italy “in conjunction with the hunter family vacation.”According to the documents, “Hunter’s primary motive in attempting to schedule the November 2015 visit to a base was to generate a pretextual purpose so that he could misrepresent his personal use of campaign funds for the family vacation.” RELATED: Federal judge denies Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of good Samaritans is receiving praise after knocking down a brush fire in Carmel Valley on Tuesday afternoon.After spending all day on top of a roof, Ubaldo Lopez and his team at Palomar Solar & Roofing were on their way back to the office."We were going down the hill, and it started to smell," Lopez said. "At first, I thought somebody crashed, but then I saw the fire."Many people slowed down on Carmel Valley Road as the flames crept closer. Others called 911 for help. But before the firefighters arrived, Lopez and his team pulled over and jumped into action."I got the extinguisher and a couple of my buddies here, they got the shovels and started putting dirt on it," Lopez pointed at his team. Right beside him attacking the growing flames were his son Damien and co-workers, Cirinio Rios and Miguel Esteban.Although the men are not trained firefighters, they are familiar with fire. They work on what is called "torch down roofing," a process where a flame is used to melt a rubbery membrane on a flat roof to make it waterproof. So they know the dangers of what could happen if the winds picked up."The weather was crazy and the red flag [warning]," Lopez said. "The fire department, they've been so busy, so you know, that could have gone out of hand."With the help of a few other good Samaritans, the team stopped the fire from spreading. Minutes later, they drove off, without knowing they would be praised for their swift actions all over social media."Omg that would have been really tragic had it spread," one person wrote on Facebook."Wow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A brief pursuit involving a stolen BMW ended Wednesday morning near a nursing home parking lot.The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday when a new model BMW was reported stolen in Santee.Two hours later, San Diego police spotted the BMW traveling westbound on state Route 94 near the Euclid Avenue exit.When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to pull over and sped away. With police in pursuit, the BMW made its way onto northbound Interstate 805, then transitioned to Interstate 15.The driver exited on Adams Avenue, crashed into a wall, and then got back on northbound I-15.After exiting Camino Del Rio South, police said the driver parked the stolen BMW in a nursing home parking lot in Mission Valley and ran away. Police found him a few blocks away and arrested him.The driver's name and the charges he faces were not immediately confirmed. 901
