XI'AN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Archeologists in the northwestern Shaanxi Province confirmed Thursday, after weeks of lab work, that the bones they found in a bronze cooking vessel from a 2,400-year-old tomb belonged to a male dog under a year old.Altogether 37 bones were found in the cooking vessel, which was unearthed in November 2010 from a tomb near the Xianyang International Airport in the suburbs of Xi'an, said Liu Daiyun, a researcher with the Shaanxi Provincial Archeological Institute."When we opened the 20-cm tall cooking vessel, we were shocked to find bones and soup inside," said Liu.The bones and soup had all turned greenish, similar in color to the bronze container, he said.Cooking vessels were a typical offering Chinese once presented to their deceased ancestors, said Liu.The custom became prevalent around the Warring States Period (475 - 221 BC), the time Liu and his colleagues believed this dog stew was offered.Hu Songmei, a researcher who did most of the lab work to identify the bones, said they found the bones were "strikingly similar" to four complete sets of canine skeletons preserved at the institute's lab.The newly found bones, however, were smaller, indicating the dog was just a pup, said Hu.Hu said further lab work was needed to tell the exact species of the canine. "Dogs were domesticated by humans at least 10,000 years ago, but the early dog species that evolved from wild wolves could be very different from today's pet dogs."Besides the dog bones, experts also found a wine-like liquid in another airtight kitchen ware from the same tomb. "Whoever the tomb owner was, he must have loved liquor and meat, so his sons wished he could still enjoy the feast in his grave."

SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday launched its long-awaited cloud-based music service Music Beta without any label licenses it originally wanted.The search giant introduced the digital music locker service at its annual I/O developer conference in San Francisco. So far, only U.S. users can access the service by requesting an invitation from Google while priorities will be given to those with the Verizon version of the Motorola Xoom tablet and attendees of the I/O conference.Since Google failed to come to a license agreement with major music labels, Music Beta is essentially a massive cloud hard drive. Users cannot share their Music Beta by Google tunes or purchase new songs. It allows users to upload 20,000 songs into the cloud, compared with Amazon Cloud Drive's 2,000 songs and 5 GB limit for free accounts.Any web-connected devices with a browser or supporting Flash can stream music from the digital locker, but the service is only for Android-powered devices.Music Beta also gets Instant Mix, a similar intelligent feature to Apple's Genius playlist creator, which creates new playlists based on a single song by analyzing its characteristics.Before unveiling the service, Google told U.S. media Monday night that the current Music Beta is not the service Google had wanted to offer and it will continue to seek licenses with major music labels.

CHENGDU, May 8 (Xinhua) -- As a brand-name herbal capsule for cardiovascular disease in China, Di'ao Xinxuekang only needs to wait for another 15 years before reaching the EU market."The Dutch medical supervisors have recognized it as a qualified drug, but we still lack the evidence of 15-year presence in the EU market," said Ji Jianxin, a research manager with the drug's developer Di'ao Group based in southwest China's Sichuan Province.Di'ao, one of the largest Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) manufacturers, has been quite depressed, as many other TCM enterprises in China, by a European Union directive on traditional herbal medicinal products fully implemented from the beginning of this month.The directive requires that all herbal medicinal products, must obtain a medical license from any EU member state before it can be allowed in the EU market.It introduced a so-called simplified registration procedure with a seven-year transition period for traditional herbal medicinal products to be licensed, including Chinese and Indian ones.However, not a single Chinese herbal medicinal product has been granted the license so far, mainly due to the prohibitive registration cost and lack of required evidence to prove the product had a 30-year history of safe use, including 15 years in the EU.With a history of more than 2,000 years, TCM did not enter into the EU market until mid-1990s, and it has been imported into the EU and sold to European customers as food supplements instead of drugs.Most Chinese producers and importers did not reserve the customs papers a decade ago, thus unable to prove the 15-year use of their products in European markets.While TCM's globalization won't be doomed by one single EU directive as TCM export value to EU only takes up 14 percent of the total in 2010, experts and industry insiders still have had serious concerns about its future."Most TCM even don't have standardized labels that can help consumers to find out its origin," said Xian Sheng, from the China Association of TCM Export Companies.

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese central government in Beijing pledged Saturday that it would work to ensure smooth and safe traveling for the public as many return home to reunite with families during the Spring Festival.It is expected that some 700 million people are to travel during a 40-day Spring Festival travel period that began Wednesday, but heavy snow and icy rain, which has continued since the new year began, has disrupted traffic and cut water and power supplies to some regions in south and southwest China.The lingering freezing weather also poses great challenges to transportation and railway authorities, as they work to avoid another travel disaster, as was seen in early 2008 when unprecedented heavy snow and freezing rain inundated the south of the country, bringing traffic to a standstill at the peak holiday season.Due to this, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Saturday that it had drawn upon the experiences gained from the 2008 weather disaster, and has ordered local bureaus to begin planning precautionary measures to combat the freezing weather.It also issued orders to local departments beginning in late December to step up snow clearance and make sure expressways and key trunk lines are not closed by snow."More police will be deployed to maintain traffic order and security, and to reduce offences such as drunk driving, speeding, passenger overloading of cars and trucks, and driving while fatigued," Huang Ming, Vice Minister of Public Security, said in a press conference held in Beijing.Meanwhile, over 8,300 service stops would be established across the country in order to provide necessities such as water and medical help to drivers and migrant works returning home for the festival.China's meteorological authority forecast Saturday that snowy weather will weaken in most regions over the next three days, but the eastern areas in southwest China will continue to see more rain and snow.On Sunday, the weather forecast anticipated that moderate snow would hit some regions in Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, and Hainan, as the southwestern province of Guizhou will see more icy rain.Local authorities said nearly 10 million have been affected in Hunan after a blizzard that started Monday, which also forced the evacuation of 73,000 people. MOSCOW, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Space Forces has re-established contact with a military satellite, Geo-IK-2, which went missing in February, local media reported Friday.According to a spokesman from the Defense Ministry, Interfax news agency said the Space Forces had already received telemetric information from the satellite and collection and analysis of the data were currently underway.After studying the information, the Defense Ministry would make a decision regarding the further use of the satellite, the spokesman said.A Rokot light-class carrier rocket carrying with the Geo-IK-2 satellite blasted off Feb. 1 from Russia's Plesetsk launching site, but placed the satellite in an incorrect orbit. After the launch, the Defense Ministry announced it had lost contact with the Geo-IK-2 and later abandoned the satellite.The Russian Space Forces then grounded launches of all Rokot light-class carrier rockets until the completion of an investigation into the failed launch.
