For dog owners, it can be a helpless feeling to see their pet panic. A newly approved drug hopes to help pets left paralyzed by the sound of fireworks and other loud noises.“We have all the way from very mild to very severe cases, where dogs are going through windows and escaping through crates during noise events,” says Dr. Amy Pike, a veterinary behaviorist.Dr. Pike is excited about a new drug, which was just approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help dogs who get stressed out by loud noises.The prescription drug is called Pexion, and it's part of a growing list of medications approved by the FDA to treat pets. The drug is given to dogs two days before an expected loud event, like the Fourth of July, as well as during the event.In a study, 66 percent of owners who gave their dog the pill say they saw good or excellent results.“I think it definitely has the potential to make a huge impact for some of these noise phobic dogs,” Dr. Pike says.However, there are downsides. The most common side effects are difficulty standing or walking, increased appetite and low energy.But dog trainer Juliana Willems is optimistic about the drug.“Everything that I’ve seen has been great and totally adding to the quality of life for these animals I’m working with,” says Willems. “I'm relieved to see that people are understanding the importance of medication in the behavior modification process.”Willems says to see the best results with the new pill, dog owners should use the medication in combination with behavior training, which could help everyone at home.“Humans have such a hard time with it, and a lot of time, I do just as much human counseling as I do dog training,” says Willems. “So, once the dog is behaving better, it improves. FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Thursday joined a coalition of 22 state attorneys general in sending a letter to the United States Senate, urging the body to immediately hold a hearing and vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.In the letter, Cameron wrote that Barrett's "unwavering commitment to a judicial philosophy that prioritizes restraint, humility, and respect for the rule of law" should lead to a quick approval from the Senate.Cameron released the following statement in support of Barrett."I'm proud to join this coalition of attorneys general in support of Judge Barrett, and I'm confident that Senate Majority Leader McConnell will make sure she is confirmed. As former legal counsel to Senator McConnell, I was fortunate to be involved in the confirmation process for Justice Neil Gorsuch, and I know the qualifications and legal background required to be confirmed to our nation's highest court. Former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who was previously fired by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, announced on Wednesday that he intends to run against Emanuel to be the city's mayor.The election will be held in February 2019. McCarthy was fired in December 2015 after it took the department 14 months to release video of the death of Laquan McDonald, who was an unarmed black 17-year-old shot and killed by Chicago Officer Jason Van Dyke. It was determined that Van Dyke had shot McDonald 16 times, leading to protests in Chicago. The case led the City of Chicago to offer a million settlement to the McDonald family, the Chicago Tribune reported. Van Dyke, who has since been charged with homicide, is still awaiting trial. McCarthy told the Tribune that he is running as a "conservative Democrat." “Between the taxes, our economy, the schools and the crime rate here, we’re a laughingstock in America,” McCarthy told the Tribune. “The prevailing thought about Chicago is we’re on our way down in all those areas, and they all infect each other, and nobody seems to get that. It’s almost like a ‘Wake up, Chicago’ moment.”McCarthy is going up against a relatively popular mayor. According to a poll by Anzalone Liszt Grove Research, Emanuel's approval rating as of January was 51 percent, compared to 40 percent who disapproved. Emanuel is seeking his third term after being President Barack Obama's first Chief of Staff in the White House. While McCarthy has made it clear that he is not running as revenge against Emanuel, he contends his firing was unjust."While I am very emotional, that’s not my motivation here,” he told the Tribune. “Why would I possibly take on turning around one of the largest American cities in the right direction? Because I’m annoyed? No. I’m doing it out of a sense of obligation as a public servant and that’s what motivates me.”He added that homicide levels dropped to their lowest levels since the 1960s while he was superintendent, but Emanuel's treatment toward police has played a factor in the city's rising homicide count.  2151

Four people have died after they were swallowed up by a massive sinkhole in a Chinese city, despite desperate rescue efforts to save them.According to state media, the sinkhole opened up around 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Dazhou, Sichuan province. Dramatic video from the scene showed people suddenly plunging through the pavement as it collapsed beneath them.Two victims died after being pulled from the pit and rushed to a hospital, state media said. They were reportedly married only days before.Efforts to rescue the other victims, a father and his young son, were unsuccessful, with the two found dead on Tuesday afternoon.Rescuers believed the final two were trapped around 10 meters (32 feet) underground, some two meters deeper than local rescuers' equipment could reach. 779
