You’ll usually find a variety of contact methods, including live chat, text messaging, email and a phone number.While you’re searching online, gather information about your current package and pricing, as well as any new promotions from your current company or competitors that can be used as leverage.Cut out what you don’t needSet aside a block of time — maybe an hour or so — and work your way through the list.My first call was to our satellite radio service provider. My husband and I have a SiriusXM subscription. But after months of spotty reception in our car, I decided it was time to cut the service completely.Instead, over the course of a 10-minute phone call, I asked to cancel, then I was met with a better offer. Before, we paid .63 per month. Now, we pay .06 a month for 12 months (for the same plan). Plus, they threw in a free month.Threatening to cancel a service can be a bargaining tactic. Here, it was the truth — I was fully ready and willing to cancel. And it got me a better price.Next? That clothing subscription. A five-minute online chat with athletic brand Fabletics resulted in me canceling my membership. Before, I paid .95 a month as an account credit, unless I logged into my account and shopped or skipped by the fifth day of the month.The customer service representative offered a store credit to stay, but I went ahead and canceled anyway.DowngradeBe patient. There’s a time commitment involved. Plus, things don’t always work out.I spent 45 minutes online chatting, then talking on the phone with DirecTV. But even after consulting with two representatives, my monthly payment remained around 0 before and after my interaction.I was told there weren’t any discounts or promotions currently available for my account. And since I didn’t want to downgrade my package (I’m not ready to give up those Lifetime movies on LMN or game shows on Game Show Network), I’ll have to wait for future offers.If you’re willing to change your TV lineup, review available channel packages online to find a slimmed-down option that works for you. Or call and talk to a representative.Ask for helpRenegotiating bills is perhaps more important now, especially for those who are dealing with financial impacts related to the coronavirus. As the pandemic began taking an economic toll in the spring, providers across a broad spectrum of industries stepped up to extend payment assistance and waive late fees for customers.I contacted some service providers to see how they’re continuing to help consumers who are struggling.Most telecommunications companies, such as Dish and Comcast, provided similar advice: If existing customers have questions or are interested in lower monthly payments, they should go online or call customer service.Contact companies proactively, and if you’ve been laid off or otherwise affected by the pandemic, be honest about your situation.Look for resources that don’t require any effort, too. I thought I might need to cancel or renegotiate my -a-year AMC Stubs Premiere movie theater loyalty account. But the company had already temporarily paused my account in light of movie theater closures.Renegotiating bills didn’t save me enough money to retire early. In a pandemic that relies heavily on the expertise and passion of our healthcare workers, we have seen many doctors and nurses working longer hours and even risking their own health to care for those in need.“This is a pandemic that's going to continue to go on. And a lot of health care providers in different settings have already been asked to work overtime shifts or extra shifts. And the thing is, that’s just increasing the burnout,” said Dr. Jessica Rainbow, RN and UArizona College of Nursing assistant professor.“Before the pandemic burnout was already a normalized issue in Nursing. And what I mean by that is that more nurses than not experienced burnout than those who have what I would call good well-being and don't suffer from burnout,” said Chloe Littzen, RN and UArizona College of Nursing Ph.D. candidate.Rainbow and Littzen are seeking ways to mitigate nurse burnout during the coronavirus pandemic. They say the pandemic has only intensified the problem.“They either leave the setting that they're in. Let's say they're in one unit, they go to another unit. They leave that facility going from, let's say, the hospital setting to the community setting or vice versa, or they leave nursing completely,” said Littzen.That puts the industry in a tough spot. The nursing shortage also affects the ability to educate future nurses and the ability to do more research.“It's important to say that this is not an issue that is the nurse's fault right or any healthcare provider or anyone who works in a healthcare setting,” said Rainbow.From their research, they say health care workers are shown to have good self-care, but it’s the systems of the work environment that can be stressful.“Where they're actually given the resources that they need to be successful. So resources as far as things like PPE, things like having adequate staffing,” said Rainbow.They say a big factor is also the public. Loved ones of those in care can help by being understanding and by adhering to guidelines, such as wearing a mask.“You know, it's important to give grace and struggling times and everyone's emotions are heightened and stressed and you know nurses are people, too. They're also a human being and they're also suffering with you,” said Littzen.They found nurses have done things like meditation, spending more time in nature, and seeking peer groups to voice shared experiences.“Social support is huge for nurses. I mean, especially to when you were a provider and you have a job where your significant other at home may not fully understand what you do. And so it's difficult sometimes if you don't have the social support of other co-workers in the same position,” said Rainbow.Rainbow’s study is called “Working in Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic. If California electric utility PG&E is responsible for California's wildfires, it may not be able to afford the payouts it would owe.PG&E disclosed in a regulatory filing Tuesday that it "experienced an outage" on a transmission line in Butte County at 6:15 a.m. on November 8 -- just 15 minutes before the Camp Fire that has so far claimed 48 lives broke out.PG&E said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. But if its equipment is found to be responsible for it, PG&E "could be subject to significant liability in excess of insurance coverage" and that this could have "a material impact" on its financial results.The utility renewed its liability insurance coverage for wildfire events for an amount of approximately .4 billion that covers the period from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019, the company said in the SEC filing.But the fire is far from being under control, which means more damage is likely. PG&E said in the filing that the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection estimates the fire won't be fully contained until November 30.The damages alone could cost up to .8 billion. according to a report from Moody's this week.PG&E may not have enough to cover the cost that, let alone any legal fees or fines it might have to pay. The utility said in its filing that it currently has .46 billion in cash after borrowing from an existing revolving credit line.Shares of PG&E (PCG) plunged more than 30% Wednesday following this disclosure and were briefly halted for volatility. The stock has now fallen by half since the Camp Fire began.The utility could need another bailout from the state of California if it's found to be liable for the Camp Fire.Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill in September that lets PG&E issue bonds backed by surcharges from the utility's customers. Those bonds would help pay for damages tied to deadly California wildfires in October 2017 caused by faulty PG&E equipment.The bill allows for the possibility that utilities could issue similar bonds for future fires, but that is not guaranteed.PG&E already faces one lawsuit on behalf of victims of the Camp Fire.A group of law firms that has dubbed itself the Northern California Fire Lawyers filed a suit Tuesday on behalf of Camp Fire survivors.The firms allege in the suit that "PG&E was negligent in failing to maintain its infrastructure and properly inspect and manage its power transmission lines." 2507

  

HOUSTON - A social media influencer was found dead along the side of a road in Houston, a day after going missing, leaving many questions for friends and family. Alexis Sharkey’s friends are now telling media outlets she feared for her safety.Sharkey was found dead Saturday morning by Houston public works crews and was not wearing any clothes, according to local media. Investigators say she had no visible wounds, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
