BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Vice President Xi Jinping expressed the hope to further boost exchanges between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the French Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) here Friday.     "As ruling parties of respective countries, the CPC and UMP both face the challenges from domestic reform and economic globalization," Xi told Patrick Devedjian, UMP general secretary, during their meeting here. SHANGHAI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Friday he hoped the United States and China would deepen mutually beneficial financial interdependence.     Carter said the financial crisis enabled closer ties between the United States and China and he hoped China would continue to buy U.S. government debt.     Carter, in China to attend events to mark the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. diplomatic ties, conveyed President-elect Barack Obama's message of his resolve to maintain sound bilateral relations.     Although China and the U.S. had different cultures, histories and political systems, they had much more in common, said Carter at a symposium marking the anniversary.     The United States attached great importance to U.S.-China relations, especially in coping with the challenge of global climate change and the financial crisis, he said.     He believed bilateral relations would continue to develop and improve in the next 30 years.     In Shanghai, Carter also attended the opening of a photo exhibition which showcased the 30-year course of China-U.S. relations.     The former president also voiced his confidence in the strong U.S. participation in the Shanghai World Expo to be held in 2010.

MACAO, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Saturday said here that Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) should promote its long-term economic diversification.     Xi, who paid the first official visit to Macao since assuming the office of Chinese Vice President in March 2008, made the remark when meeting with the SAR's Chief Executive Ho Hau Wah and 113 representatives from all walks of the local society in the Macao East Asian Games Dome. The land-strapped SAR has long been requesting a part in its development.     Xi arrived in Macao earlier this morning, starting his two-day visit to the island city. Xi paid two visits to the SAR in 2001 and 2005 respectively before assuming the Chinese vice-presidency.
