As more and more people are venturing out, some people might be taking a more relaxed stance on wearing masks. This is especially true now that we're months into the pandemic, and the weather is starting to heat up. But is it okay to ask someone to put on a mask who's not wearing one?"I think it’s always reasonable if you see someone not doing something that is helping keeping others safe, then you should feel free to speak up. Particularly if they’re within six feet of your space," said Denver Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Connie Savor Price. She says it may be a little uncomfortable, and a bit awkward, she says you can always ask. A majority of the states across the country have mask requirements or recommendations. Most of them say you should wear a mask when social distancing is not possible or when you’re inside a business. The CDC also issued a recommendation in April that face coverings should be worn when social distancing is not possible."The hardest thing for me and for others I think is when you’re outside exercising and you’re not within the vicinity of others. And, I think the rules are a little unclear for that. If you’re not within six feet of others then I think it’s okay, but certainly if you’re on a crowded hiking trail, or are in a condition where you’re near others, you should wear a mask and at least put it on when you’re within six feet of others," said Dr. Savor Price. She says the biggest reason to wear a mask isn’t necessarily for your own protection, although you do get moderate protection from them. But, it prevents your respiratory droplets from infecting others if you have the disease. 1649

As people prepare to travel for Christmas, experts are concerned about another spike in coronavirus cases. We are almost a month out from Thanksgiving, and according to the COVID Tracking Project, more than 47,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19 since Thanksgiving. And although the CDC advised against traveling, the Transportation Security Administration screened 9.5 million travelers during the 10-day Thanksgiving travel period.TSA also screened more than 3.2 million people at airports nationwide this past weekend. And as people gear up to spend the Christmas holiday with loved ones, the surge of new COVID-19 cases continues with no end in sight. The Harvard Global Health Institute and Brown School of Public Health created a risk-assessment tool that color-codes states with over 25 new daily cases per 100,000 people. The color red on the map means the state is considered "at a tipping point."According to the Harvard and Brown researchers, the 10 worst states considered to be "at a tipping point" are Tennessee, Rhode Island, California, Alabama, Arizona, Oklahoma, Indiana, Utah, Arkansas, and Delaware.According to Johns Hopkins University data, in Tennessee, the state's positive rate is 19.2%.In Alabama, the state's positive rate is 40.4%. Arkansas's positive rate is 18.7%, Arizona's is 13.1%, Delaware's is 7.7%, 13.3% of COVID tests in California are positive, Oklahoma's positive rate is 21.1%, Indiana has an 11.6% positive rate, Rhode Island is at a 6.3%, and 17.6% of COVID tests in Utah are positive.According to the CDC, between 1.2 million to 2.3 million new cases are likely to be reported in the week ending January 9, 2021. 1671
ATLANTA — Georgia's legislature on Tuesday passed hate crimes legislation deemed essential by state leaders, sending the measure to Gov. Brian Kemp's desk.Georgia is currently one of four states in the U.S. without hate crime laws. The price Republicans exacted for moving that legislation forward was the simultaneous passage of a bill that would mandate penalties for crimes targeting police and other first responders. The action comes after Senate Republicans had added police as a protected class to the hate crimes legislation last week, but then moved those protections to a separate bill in a deal between the parties.Kemp's office said in a statement that he'd sign the hate crimes bill, pending a legal review. The bill's passage comes amid weeks-long protests against systemic racism throughout the country. The protests were sparked by the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis after bystander video showed an officer kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. The passage also comes weeks after three arrests were made in connection with the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery. The 25-year-old Arbery was killed in Burnswick, Georgia in February, and his case changed jurisdictions several times due to one of the suspect's connections with the local District Attorney's office. It wasn't until days after a video of the altercation leaked to the public in May that two of the men, Gregory and Travis McMichael, were arrested and charged with murder. A third man, William "Roddy" Bryan, was also charged with murder a few weeks later. 1582
As you head to the stores for your back-to-school shopping, you may get suckered into buying items marked down as a sale. But there are a few things you should know before shopping if you want to save money.Jeff Kreisler, editor and chief of People Science, says in order to be a smart shopper, you have to pay attention to the "decoy price."“If something has three different versions," explains Kreisler. "The top version is too expensive, the bottom version is too cheap, and because we don’t really know how to value it, we chose what’s in the middle.”That middle item is not always the best deal. Also, don't get suckered into buying the newest item, which is usually overpriced. 712
