A watchdog group says it has found asbestos in several products, sold in a store targeted to teens and young girls. What do you think of when you hear the word asbestos?“I think of like commercials like where your loved one has been exposed to asbestos and you die,” one woman says. “I'm like, 'Oh my God,' it's terrible.”Another woman said, “Like in a house that's like shut down forever” she says. “There's asbestos in a house.”You don't usually think of makeup.Danny Katz with U.S. PIRG, a consumer watchdog group said it tested more than a dozen make up products and found "high levels of asbestos" in three. They're all sold at Claire's, a store with products aimed toward girls and young women.“It's completely unacceptable to have asbestos in these products,” Katz says. “Asbestos if you inhale it or ingested it can lead to lung cancer it can lead to mesothelioma, which is cancer of the internal organs, and if you apply it over skin over time it can also increase the risk of skin cancer."Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in talc, a common product in many makeup products. But Katz says it's a company's responsibility to make sure the talc it uses hasn't been contaminated.“We need Claire's to remove these products from the shelves and we need them to figure out how asbestos got in their products to begin with,” Katz says. “We need Congress and the FDA to take action. We need to ban asbestos from beauty care products and makeup.”Right now, Katz and U.S. PIRG are urging us to avoid products with talc until federal laws change.It's not the first time Claire's has come under scrutiny for this. Three of America's largest grocery chains, Kroger, Walmart and Wegmans, have joined ALDI and Target in issuing a recall for peaches in connection with a nationwide Salmonella outbreak.On Saturday, Prima Wawona expanded a recall of peaches shipped by the company to include those bagged and loose peaches that had been sold across the country.The new recall includes Kroger stores and its affiliates — including Jay-C, King Soopers, City Market. Fry's, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Foods Co. and Smiths — as well as peaches sold at Walmart and Wegmans.The possibly contaminated fruit was sold between June 1 and Aug. 3Consumers should not eat the peaches. Instead, the CDC says to throw them away, even if some of them were eaten and no one has gotten sick.Once the peaches have been discarded, health officials suggest washing and sanitizing the places where the produce was stored, like countertops, refrigerator drawers and shelves. The CDC also urged restaurants, retailers, suppliers and distributors not to sell or ship the recalled peaches.The FDA also advises that anyone who doesn't remember when they purchased Prima Wawona peaches or those that aren't sure who supplied their peaches should throw away peaches in their fridge out of an abundance of caution.As of August 19, 2020, CDC is reporting a total of 68 Salmonella cases across nine states.The CDC is investigating to find the source of contamination and to identify other retailers that may have sold tainted peaches.Symptoms of Salmonella infection include:Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria.The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.In some people, the illness may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. TORONTO (AP) — The United States has agreed with Canada and Mexico to extend their agreement to keep their border closed to non-essential travel to July 21 during the coronavirus pandemic. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday's agreement extends the closure by another 30 days. "This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe,” the prime minister said in his daily press conference. Americans who are returning to the U.S. and Canadians who are returning to Canada are exempted from the border closure.Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf issued a statement Tuesday on why extending non-essential travel restrictions with Canada and Mexico was necessary. "The Department of Homeland Security will ensure that the measures taken at our borders will protect America from all threats, including threats against the health and safety of our citizens," Wolf said in the statement. "Based on the success of the existing restrictions and the emergence of additional global COVID-19 hotspots, the Department will continue to limit non-essential travel at our land ports of entry with Canada and Mexico. This extension protects Americans while keeping essential trade and travel flowing as we reopen the American economy. The Department of Homeland Security is in close contact with our Canadian and Mexican counterparts regarding this extension, and they agree on the need to extend their non-essential travel restrictions as well. (CNS) - Police Monday announced the arrest of a 47-year-old parolee accused in the shooting deaths of three men during a fight at a bowling alley in Torrance.The arrest of Reginald Wallace of Los Angeles, who had been on parole since 2017 following a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm, was announced by Torrance police Chief Eve Irvine at a Monday afternoon news conference at police headquarters.Wallace was arrested early Sunday and was being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to sheriff's inmate records. Officers responded to a shots-fired call just before midnight Friday at Gable House Bowl, 22501 Hawthorne Blvd. Three men were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Two other men sought medical attention on their own.Irvine said a fight involving a few people grew into a brawl involving as many as 15. At some point, Wallace pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired into the crowd, Irvine alleged, adding that he was believed to have been the only shooter.Witness Dana Scott previously told reporters that a group of women got into a fight inside the building, then some men got involved.
