When members enter the Schlessman Family YMCA, they’re greeted with new safety measures including getting their temperature taken at the front door.“We’re just ensuring that members, guests and staff are below a 100.4 fever,” said Vanessa Pritchett, sales director with the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver.She says most of the 24,000 YMCA locations across the country were shut down for nearly three months due to the pandemic.Now, with many YMCAs reopening, staff are taking extra steps to ensure member safety like using protective plexiglass at the entrance and having more hand sanitizer stations in more locations.“We really missed our members and we are so much more than a gym,” Pritchett said. “We are focusing on the mind, body and spirit of everyone in our community.”Additional safety measures include mobile check-ins, closing twice a day for deep cleaning, and restructuring the layout of workout equipment to promote social distancing.You don’t have to wear a mask while you’re working out at the YMCA but in between sets or if you switch to a new station, staff is asking members to cover up.To help keep the facilities as clean as possible, the YMCA is encouraging members to clean equipment before and after using it.“You are checking in via touchless system,” said Meredith Marshall, one the nearly 10 million YMCA members in America.She’s been coming to the YMCA since she was eight years old and says these new changes give her peace of mind while working out her body.“It lets me know that the YMCA has thought through what we are doing here,” Marshall said. “How we are to interact with one another.”Interacting and reconnecting with the YMCA community as they move to reopen safely and responsibly. 1725

But beyond that, the murals can be great for a neighborhood and its businesses.Tracy Weil is midway through his latest project: a 125-foot long mural in Denver’s River North Arts District.Murals like Weil’s do more for a neighborhood than add a splash of color to an otherwise dull brick wall."It can really kind of give an identity to a neighborhood, which I think is pretty fantastic,” says Weil. “If there’s not a lot of people there, not a lot of restaurants, what the murals do is they start to draw people. And they start to draw business."That’s exactly why the events center and nightclub behind the freshly-painted wall hires artists like Weil."I think it’s a great way to bring attention, to not just your specific business maybe, but to a neighborhood, to a region," says Andrew Feinstein, owner of EXDO Events Center and Tracks nightclub. “Regardless of what murals cost, it’s absolutely the right investment."And it’s an investment that's paying off, particularly when it comes to presence on social media. John Beldock, owner of a local motorsport store and body shop, says their mural of Evel Knievel has seen its share of Instagram tags."Branding-wise, it really adds to what people think about us," says Beldock.“It’s exiting to be a part of it; it makes a great selfie or Facebook profile pic or Instagram post,” says Weil. “And people really get into it.” 1631

When a rumor of a mass shooting trickled out late Wednesday evening, play director Brett Elliott was putting the finishing touches on a student production.“Immediately people started panicking and crying, not knowing who to reach out to first because all of their friends could have been there,” Elliott describes.Elliott was set to direct a play about the Columbine High School shooting with student actors at California Lutheran University. The play “Columbinus” was based on the events that took place in the 1999 shooting in Columbine, Colorado.“I was sitting right over here to your right, giving final notes and instructions to my actors, literally on how to effectively portray people affected by a mass shooting, Elliott says.“We thought it was vital three days ago. We thought it was immediate three days ago. Now, it’s on our doorstep.”One of his cast members did, in fact, lose a best friend.“I've spent a month and half with these kids, trying to teach them what it could be like to experience an event like this, try to help them get into the minds of people, of a community affected by an event like this,” Elliott says. “I would never in a million years have wished for them to actually live it. It’s heartbreaking.”This weekend's opening performances have been canceled. The future of the production is unclear.However, Elliott and the cast unanimously agree that it should go on."It is exponentially more important to us all now," Elliott says.Whether the play will go on is up to the university. But if theatre's job is to hold a mirror up to nature, to society, Elliott believes the show must go on, especially now.“This show is why we do theatre,” Elliott says. “This show is why theatre exists.” 1724

With five weeks remaining in the college football season, the College Football Playoff selection committee unveiled the first poll, and there is little surprise at who is at the top. Alabama, the defending national champs, was ranked No. 1 in the poll released Tuesday, followed by the 2017 champs No. 2-ranked Clemson. With Alabama and Clemson both sporting unbeaten records, it is not surprising to see the two squads at the top of the ranking. But the selection committee's third choice might leave some fans scratching their head. Rather than picking unbeaten Notre Dame at No. 3, the selection committee slotted one-loss LSU as the third pick. Notre Dame, who has a win over Michigan who is ranked at No. 5 in the CFP ranking, was at No. 4. With the toughest part of Notre Dame's schedule in the past, and no remaining Top 25 games remaining on the schedule, the Irish's chances of making the College Football Playoff are in question given that a one-loss team is already ahead of Notre Dame. A group of other one-loss teams are poised to potentially overtake Notre Dame at the No. 4 spot since most of those squads will get the opportunity to play in a conference title game. With Notre Dame being an independent, the Irish do not get the benefit of playing in a conference championship. Behind Michigan is a quintet of teams sporting 7-1 records going into Week 9. While millions of Americans tuned in to watch the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, data shows the event will likely not impact the final outcome of the election.The first of three presidential debates was held Tuesday night in Cleveland, Ohio.NewsChannel 5 Political Analyst Pat Nolan said the first debate always brings high stakes for the candidates and high interest from voters."This is probably the biggest opportunity for both candidates to get in front of voters and convince them they are the right person," said Nolan.While people tuned in to hear what both candidates had to say, Nolan said polls show the debate ultimately won't sway voters."I think people have decided, I like Donald Trump and I will vote for him, or I like Joe Biden, I will vote for Joe Biden and they won’t change their minds," said Nolan.The debate was held in Ohio, which is considered a swing state. Nolan said while the number of undecided voters may be smaller in the current polarizing political climate, winning those votes matters and can make a difference in swing states.While both President Trump and Biden presented their plans for the country and tried to energize supporters, Nolan said many were watching for a viral moment that could make or break either candidate."It's like any big event, when you are up on the stage and the bright lights are out there, anyone can make a mistake."There are still two more debates coming up in October.
