CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is teaming up with local high schools to help beautify one of its most important corridors.Students from High Tech High began painting a mural Tuesday on a business near Broadway and E Street, the first of five new student-painted murals planned along the Broadway corridor this year.Broadway is the highest revenue-producing corridor in the city, said Chula Vista councilmember Jill Galvez, but a 2019 survey by the Institute for Public Strategies highlighted community concerns with graffiti and vandalism. In the survey of 160 businesses along Broadway, more than 70 percent said graffiti and vandalism were a top concern.Galvez challenged high schools to paint city utility boxes last year and says it’s been successful at deterring graffiti.“Artists respect other artists’ work,” she said.“We’ve already seen the delight of people driving by to see beautiful artwork. It brightens your day. This is going to be the first of many projects along Broadway,” she added.In addition to High Tech High, she said Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School and MAAC Community Charter School are working on murals.Two classes of seniors led by art teacher Chelsea Smith. She said students came up with designs then voted on their favorites as a class. Local businesses then voted on the finalists.High Tech High students are covering two sides of Wild Woolly's Saloon, a frequent target for taggers. One side will depict a floral scene, the other will feature beach imagery and a classic car."I think it's great. I hope it puts a stop to the graffiti," said Autumn Hammer, the bar's manager. Among the student painters is Conner Boggan.“I live in this side of Chula Vista, so it’s definitely really exciting to see this happening in my community,” he said. “A lot of what people think of Chula Vista, especially this side, is that it’s dirty. CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Owners of vacant or blighted property in Chula Vista will now be able to get a tax break in exchange for growing fruits and vegetables.The plan was approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors. The city is covered by an Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone which allows owners of more than 170 qualifying properties to submit plans to turn the land into community gardens or other agricultural uses.The program, created by a 2014 law, would lower property taxes based on per-acre value of the irrigated farmland.City officials say the aim of the plan is to increase green spaces, build community and educate the public about fresh food production."It's a great way to utilize parcels that maybe haven't been developed to their full potential," Supervisor Greg Cox said. "I think that's something we ought to see, frankly, in the other 16 cities in San Diego County and the unincorporated area."San Diego became the county’s first city to adopt the program in 2018 with 2,000 properties eligible for the program.Property owners must now apply with the city. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - UTC Aerospace Systems plans to wind down manufacturing at its Chula Vista aircraft plant beginning early next year, eliminating around 300 jobs, it was reported Friday.The company -- a division of Farmington, Connecticut-based conglomerate United Technologies -- said the decision stems from ending production of certain commercial aircraft models, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.The Chula Vista plant builds aerodynamic engine pods and mounts for customers such as Boeing and Airbus.UTC Aerospace plans to keep an after-market spare parts distribution, engineering test labs and administrative jobs in Chula Vista, according to the Union-Tribune."We remain committed to being in Chula Vista," Stacey MacNeil, vice president of communications for UTC Aerospace told the newspaper. "There will still be 1,500 jobs there. We are not shutting down the entire location."The closure of manufacturing, however, will end production of aircraft components at the plant, which has been building planes and supplying aircraft sub-systems since Fred Rohr founded Rohr Aircraft Co. in 1940, according to the Union-Tribune."We recognize the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, and will not begin the wind-down until 2019," the company said in a statement. "We expect the entire process to take place over a two-year period."The layoffs include about 265 sheet metal workers who are members of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, according to the Union-Tribune. Non-union supervisors, purchasers and other salaried workers involved in manufacturing also will lose their jobs.In July, UTC Aerospace Systems notified the union of the planned shutdown, according to the Union-Tribune.The first round of layoffs is expected in the first quarter of next year, with a second round slated late in the year. CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police, who were told a car was stolen with an infant still inside, now say that a child was never in danger and that the person who reported the car stolen lied to get a quicker response from police.Just before 10 p.m. Thursday evening, a 2010 Mercury Milan was reported stolen from a BP gas station in the 1300 block of Hopple Street with a 10-month-old infant still inside.Police caught up with two suspects in the car shortly before 11 p.m., and the suspects fled the vehicle about five miles away from where it was reported stolen.Officers did not find a child inside the vehicle, and the suspects evaded capture, police said.Cincinnati police said the person who reported the car stolen changed his story about 45 minutes into their investigation, saying the infant was not in the car when it was stolen."He stated that there's some money in the car, and that's why he told us there was a 10-month-old in the car, because he knew it would be a top priority for us if this was the case," Cincinnati Police Capt. (KGTV) - Legislation needed to advance the Chula Vista Bayfront Project was signed Friday by Governor Jerry Brown.Assembly Bill 2646 authorizes the transfer of a 97-acre parcel of land in Chula Vista to the San Diego Unified Port District.
