DEL MAR (CNS) - A 3-year-old filly suffered a fatal injury during a morning workout Saturday at the Del Mar.Lovely Lilia pulled up after the workout at about 5 a.m. and veterinarians said the horse could not be saved and was euthanized, according to Mac McBride, Del Mar's director of media.Lovely Lilia was eased in her final race, a mile turf race at Santa Anita Park June 12, which she led at the halfway point.Lovely Lilia made seven starts, winning twice and finishing second once, earning ,551.Del Mar made the safety of people and horses the leading theme of its 81st summer meet which began Friday with no fans in the stands for the first time because of the coronavirus pandemic.The meet's horse and rider safety initiatives amplified measures Del Mar introduced over the last several seasons of racing that led it to being recognized as one the nation's safest racetracks for 2018 and 2019, according to figures from The Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database provided by the track.Del Mar had a rate of 0.79 fatal injuries per 1,000 starts in 2018 and 0.62 in 2019. The national average for track's reporting was 1.68.While there were no racing deaths, there were four training deaths during last year's summer meet and three racing deaths and two in training during the fall meet.Del Mar is continuing its Entry Review Panel of regulatory veterinarians who will oversee the entries of all horses and provide an additional review of each of their medical, training and racing histories. The panel will recommend to the track's stewards that any horse it deems unfit for competition be barred from racing.Del Mar is furthering its adoption of reforms modeled after the International Federation Horseracing Association requirements. Rules surrounding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories have been enhanced and extended, and additional rules regarding other equine medications have been clarified and codified.Random testing will continue for any horse at Del Mar, including ones readying for, or having just completed, morning workouts.Just as they were last summer, veterinarians are stationed at elevated observation points at the facility to oversee morning workouts and will have the ability -- through communication with outriders -- to remove horses from the racetrack and have them undergo a follow-up soundness examination.Exercise riders and jockeys again will be prohibited from using a riding crop to encourage their horses during morning workouts.The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club created a stakeholder advisory committee last summer represented by trainers, veterinarians, jockeys, racing surfaces maintenance personnel and management that met regularly to discuss safety practices, operations and track surfaces. DENVER — Sunday was a long day for Kathryn Coogan, who drove around the Highland neighborhood in Denver looking for Rubble, her 4-year old son's therapy dog.Rubble was apparently stolen Saturday night.The Wheat Ridge, Colorado mom had taken the 9-month-old plott hound mix to a restaurant/bar on the 2200 block of West 32nd Avenue, tying his leash to the railing out front, while she went inside to visit with friends."He was wearing a red turtleneck sweater," she said. "He had his little toy and a bone."Coogan said when she came back outside, Rubble was gone."This dog is really, really, really important to my family and my son," she said, while choking back tears. "I have a special needs little boy. He's Rubble's daddy."Coogan said they adopted Rubble when he was three months old."He was found on the side of a road with all his siblings in a box of rocks, which is why his name is Rubble," she said.Coogan said witnesses told her that a man and a woman walked by the restaurant, turned around, came back and asked whose dog that was.  She said they were told that it belonged to someone in the restaurant."They unleashed him," she said, "and started walking toward Tejon Street."Coogan said she can't help but wonder if someone thought the dog shouldn't have been out in the cold."I don't know if he took him, if he dropped him off, if he woke up and realized he stole someone's dog," she said, "or if he's trying to make a point."She said if that's the case, he didn't handle it right."If it's 100 degrees and in the car, hell yeah, break the window," she said, "but we were right here."She's pleading for Rubble's return.Coogan said she spent the day Sunday filing a police report, posting fliers in the neighborhood and searching for Rubble."I just want my dog back," she said. 1837

DENVER — "Game of Thrones" fans who wanted to own something like the near-mythical "Dire Wolves" on the series are now abandoning Huskies in record numbers."People have actually asked me if we have any Dire Wolves. That doesn't exist." said Maren Gibson with the Arctic Breeds Rescue, which rescues Huskies, Malamutes and other northern breeds in Utah and Colorado. "They have no real knowledge of the breed."Now, many of those dogs are being found on the street or abandoned in shelters."We've said amongst ourselves, 'What is going on with all these lost Huskies?'" said Stephanie Weber, who helps run the Facebook group Lost and Found Dogs of Colorado. Weber said they have recently seen a surge in found Huskies that no one is looking for."So, it seems sort of like maybe they are not just getting loose," said Weber. "Maybe someone is turning them loose, getting rid of them." At the Dumb Friends League Shelter in Aurora, there has also been a significant increase in the number of Huskies and Malamutes. The shelter has seen a 25 percent increase in the last fiscal year, compared to only a 2.5 percent increase the year before.Some are strays, but almost half of them have been surrendered by their owners."The reasons people are giving when they are surrendering the dogs are time and space, which means they don't have enough time for the dog, they don't have enough space for the dog," said Maia Brusseau, a spokeswoman with the Dumb Friends League. "If you want to adopt this type of dog, you need to make sure it's right for your lifestyle."The high-energy breed can be a challenge for many owners."Northern breeds are difficult," said Weber, who is fostering a Husky mix. "They're stubborn. They're runners. They're escape artists, They're chewers. They're very vocal. They have high energy and need a lot of exercise. They're great dogs if you're willing to make your life fit around them."Weber said too many people choose pets as an extension of the favorite show or movie and not based on what is the best fit for their family."When '101 Dalmatians' came out, everyone wanted a Dalmatian. It happens with every trend like that. but 15 years is a long time to live with not the right dog," said Weber.She recommends volunteering at a wolf rescue if you want to see something like a Dire Wolf or fostering the breed before you decide to adopt. 2427

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Train traffic in Del Mar was stopped Wednesday, after a cliff collapse near 11th Street. It was a beautiful afternoon for sun and surf until the earth came tumbling down. Del Mar resident, Ingrid Hoffmeister has seen it for years - the cliffs in front of her home, slowly disappearing.“We all know it’s happening, so it’s not a surprise," Hoffmeister said. “It’s getting closer and closer to the path of where you’re walking.”Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, plumes of dust filled the air, as enormous chunks of the Del Mar cliffs came crumbling down onto the beach.
