SAN FRANCISCO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Amazon announced Thursday that it had reached an agreement with NBC Universal to allow its members to view certain movies from Universal Pictures on-line through its movie streaming service.According to the on-line retail giant, Oscar-winning movies such as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Gosford Park" and "Elizabeth" as well as other favorites like "Notting Hill" and "Billy Elliot" are part of the pact.The movies will be available to Amazon Prime members through its streaming service Prime Instant Video. Amazon Prime is a membership program that gives subscribers discounts on shipping for a 79 U.S. dollar annual fee.In February, Amazon said it would offer Prime customers unlimited access to an on-line video library. Last Wednesday, Amazon announced an accord with CBS that expanded the video library to more than 8,000 movies and TV shows. It said Thursday that the NBC deal will bring the number to more than 9,000.With the CBS, NBC Universal deals, Amazon steps up its rivalry against other movie streaming services, especially Netflix, a popular on-line and mail-order movie rental company which just boosted prices by 60 percent for some subscribers. Analysts said Amazon is trying to make the pitch to those customers who are disappointed with Netflix.In a second-quarter earnings letter to investors distributed on Monday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said Netflix had more than 24.6 million subscribers in the U.S. at the end of June and vastly more streaming content than its competitors."We haven't detected an impact on our business from Amazon Prime," he noted.

PARIS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- European heavy-lift launcher Ariane 5 lifted off two communication satellites Wednesday from the Kourou launch centre in French Guiana, live broadcast of the launching process showed.The rocket, carrying the two communication satellites Arabsat 5C and SES-2, was launched at GMT 2138.This was the fifth heavy-lift mission of Ariane 5 in 2011. Arianespace had planned six Ariane 5 missions through 2011.The satellite Arabsat-5C was developed for the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) to provide satellite capacity in both C-band and Ka-band frequencies for a wide range of communications services.Jointly produced by Europe's EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, it will be positioned at 20 degree East orbital location to cover the Middle East and Africa.Manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corporation of the United States, SES-2 will join the fleet of European satellite telecommunications operator SES, and is to be positioned at 87 degree West for coverage over North America and the Caribbean.Both Arabsat-5C and SES-2 have life-spans as long as 15 years.This Ariane 5 dual-passenger mission was postponed from Tuesday due to local strikes of French Guiana workers.Founded in 1980 as the world's first launch service and solutions company, Arianespace planned to achieve six Ariane 5 missions through 2011. Through 2010, heavy-lift workhorse Ariane 5 finished six missions, sending a dozen spacecraft into expected orbits.The next mission from Arianespace centre in Kourou was scheduled for Oct. 20 by medium-lift vehicle Soyuz. BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- The Atlantis mission to be launched by NASA on July 8 will not be an end to the space age, as some media suggest.Although it is the final mission of the space shuttle, it will open up "the next chapter" in the United States' space exploration, NASA's administrator Charles Bolden Jr said at the National Press Club in Washington on Friday."When I hear people say - or listen to media reports - that the final shuttle flight marks the end of US human space flight, I have to say . . . these folks must be living on another planet," he said."As a former astronaut and the current NASA administrator, I'm here to tell you that American leadership in space will continue for at least the next half-century because we have laid the foundation for success - and for NASA, failure is not an option," he said.NASA administrator Charles Bolden Jr drew a lot of media attention during his speech at the National Press Club in Washington DC.One of the foundations is the "unprecedented" research capabilities the International Space Station (ISS) now possesses, largely thanks to the space shuttle missions.Although some media imply that "the game will be up" once the ISS is out of orbit in 2020, he said the splendid research results and rich knowledge astronauts and scientists have accumulated through more than 1,200 experiments since 1998 have laid out "a stepping-stone to the rest of the solar system and the tip of what comes next".As NASA turns a new page, it will "focus on deep space exploration", while leaving US private companies to operate low Earth orbit transportation systems for tourism and business, he said.NASA will develop "a deep space crew vehicle and an evolvable heavy-lift rocket," he said. SINGAPORE, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Researchers from Singapore and China are conducting a research aimed at using different technologies to completely capture and convert carbon dioxide in industrial emissions into energy, local daily Lianhe Zaobao reported on Tuesday.The project, supported by the National Research Foundation (NSF) of Singapore, will make use of sunlight as well as photochemical and photosynthetic processes, the foundation said.The researchers involved in the five-year project are from China's Peking University and Singapore's National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University. A research center will be established under the Campus for Research Excellence and Tehnological Enterprise, a program also known as CREATE, the foundation said.It will be the first project involving cooperation with a Chinese university under the program. It will be located at the University Town of the National University of Singapore due to be completed by the end of the year.Lee Yuan-Kun, a researcher at the National University of Singapore, said no single chemical process can capture and convert the carbon dioxide completely so the researchers will be first treating the emissions with photochemical and electrochemical processes to convert most of the carbon dioxide into energy resources such as methane.The gas with thinner carbon dioxide will then be used to grow microalgae, he said.Nevertheless, for the cost of renewable energy to be close to that of fossil fuel, the efficiency will have to be drastically improved by about five to 10 times, Lee said.The project is one of three energy research projects to be housed under the Campus for Research Excellence and Tehnological Enterprise program.Zhang Dongxiao, from the College of Engineering at Peking University, said that the research program seeks to develop energy efficient and environmentally friendly carbon capture technologies that can be applied in the manufacturing and chemical industries, and that it complements Peking University's strong capability in carbon storage."Reducing carbon intensity will not only benefit both countries in terms of cost competitiveness of products made, but also portrays a good image on our national responsibility to achieve a sustainable Earth," Zhang said. 

CANBERRA, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Going to work when you are feeling sick can make you sicker in the long run, an expert told Australia's media on Friday.New Zealand sociologist Professor Kevin Dew from the Victoria University in Wellington, has assessed more than 40 papers about " presenteeism".He defined presenteeism as: "People that are turning up at work when they feel that they should be at home sick.""People feel compelled to go to work because someone else would have to take up the workload (and they have a) feeling of responsibility for not being able to care properly for patients (if they don't show up)," he told the Australia Associated Press on Friday.He said that evidence suggested people who go to work when they are sick can have long term negative effects on health and productivity.Evidence shows that presenteeism increases illness, including musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, depression, and serious coronary events. It also leads to exhaustion which, in turn, leads to more presenteeism.Prof. Dew said certain medical conditions like depression and migraine are also linked with presenteeism because they are not seen as legitimate reasons for absence.He has written an editorial in the latest issue of the British Medical Journal about his findings.
