MILWAUKEE -- Some Milwaukee high schoolers are crushed after the dress they ordered for prom wasn’t done in time for the dance.Indira Ali, Riverside University High School Senior, wanted a custom made prom dress for her dance on April 20.Back in February, she met with Milwaukee designer, Kelvin Hayden and they came up with a design. She said weeks went by and she couldn’t get a hold of him. “I’ve been trying to contact him about it see how my dress is coming along. Every time he would give me an excuse on why I can’t see it, why he’s not returning calls,” Ali said. Ali said her mom put down a 0 deposit for the dress through PayPal.She said she was promised the dress would be done before the dance, but it wasn’t. Hours before prom she was forced to find a different one.“He told me it was going to be done in four weeks and those four weeks came and went by and I still didn’t have a dress,” Ali said. Her mom and others were furious and shared their stories on Facebook, demanding Hayden give these girls their money back. Hayden talked with Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee over the phone. He said he refunded everyone and has apologized to the young girls and their mothers.He said the company he ordered lace from for one of the prom dresses kept sending the wrong kind and weeks went by and he was forced to order a different material. “I ordered some of that fabric and paid for express shipping which was well over 0, it came in and mind you, it came in the day before her prom,” said Hayden. Issues with that one dress, Hayden said, delayed his work on three other prom dresses. With 25 years experience as a designer, Hayden told WTMJ he’s never had anything like this happen before. “There’s nothing I can say that’s going to bring their special day back,” Hayden said. A photographer, Timothy Ricketts, saw the story on social media and decided he would find a way to make it up to the girls.He said he plans to get hair stylists and makeup artists involved and take professional photos of the teens for free. The group made of Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines, and Emily Strayer posted a statement on their website saying they wanted to meet "this moment."The group also acknowledged that there was an existing band in New Zealand that allowed them "to share their name." The move follows a decision by country group Lady Antebellum to change to Lady A after acknowledging the word's association to slavery. EDEN, the Bronx — Police arrested three people Thursday in connection with the shooting death of a dad gunned down as he crossed a Bronx street with his daughter.Davon Delks, 21, Laquan Heyward, 25 and Devon Vines, 27, were all arrested on murder charges.Anthony Robinson, 29, was holding his 6-year-old daughter's hand when he was fatally shot on July 6. Video showed Robinson, hand in hand with his 6-year-old daughter, look to his left at a Bronx intersection and cross when a car paused to let them go. The driver then pulled up and someone in the vehicle opened fire, striking Robinson repeatedly.Robinson collapsed to the ground at East 170th Street and Sheridan Avenue. MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee’s top cop has been demoted. Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales is now Captain Morales. The Fire and Police Commission could have taken a number of actions against Morales as they voted on his discipline Thursday night including firing him. Instead, they chose a demotion.“The chief, effective immediately, is demoted to the rank of captain,” said Steve DeVougas, chair of the Fire and Police Commission.Morales listened in virtually as every member voted for his demotion. He never made a comment. However, some of the commissioners weighed in.“I feel you have personally not worked with us as the oversight board,” said Nelson Soler, a commissioner with the Fire and Police Commission.Over a month ago, the FPC issued 11 directives to Morales in order for him to keep his job. They included things like increased transparency around investigations and reviewing the policy on using teargas and pepper spray against demonstrators following recent incidents in Milwaukee.Several other directives are meant to create more communication between Morales and the civilian panel. Morales will be required to attend all FPC meetings and allow commissioners to visit his office at their discretion. The FPC also demands police respond to all of its open records requests.“His conduct is unbecoming filled with ethical lapses and flawed decision. Making it inconsistent with some charged with leading the Milwaukee Police Department,” said Ray Robakowski, a commissioner with the Fire and Police Commission.The last few days exposed a deep rift between Morales and FPC Chair Steven DeVougas. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett described it as a feud. But the issues clearly went deeper than a disagreement between the two as every member of the commission agreed Morales needed to go.Assistant Chief Michael Brunson is now Acting Chief Brunson effective immediately. More than 100 law enforcement agencies have withdrawn from helping the Milwaukee Police Department at the Democratic National Convention, three weeks before the big event. According to the police chief, the agencies cited concerns over potential new policies related to crowd control.The Milwaukee Police Department requested the help of more than 1,000 officers from other law enforcement departments for security at the Democratic National Convention. Even though the event will be scaled-down at the Wisconsin Center due to the COVID-19 pandemic, losing many of these officers will make things more complex for Milwaukee police.Chief Alfonso Morales now has to deal with a new task with only three weeks until the DNC.He could not reveal the number of officers he’s lost for security reasons but says the reason agencies pulled out of the convention has to do with the Fire and Police Commission directives given to him last week related to crowd control. Specifically, they’re concerned over the directive to discontinue the use of tear gas and large amounts of pepper spray.“When you rule an unlawful assembly to help break up that crowd, once we deem them unruly, that’s a safe manner in doing so. Not having those tools increases the potential for more violence,” Morales said. “That’s a big concern for the law enforcement community within Milwaukee and outside of Milwaukee.”This is how the departments in West Allis, Fond du Lac and Franklin feel.
