SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neglecting dental hygiene can not only impact a person's overall health but also their self-esteem. For many San Diegans, a lack of insurance means they don't see a dentist for years or even decades. “I’ve seen people in my practice in the private area that haven’t been to the dentist in 20 to 40 years," said Dr. Irvin Silverstein, director of the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic Project.The student-run clinic has been working to fill the gap for low-income patients in San Diego for 20 years. “The biggest thing it has done is help meet the need in San Diego for a lot of underserved people. People think that underserved means homelessness or out on the streets, no. We see a lot of working poor," said Silverstein. He says the American Dental Association (ADA) is acknowledging dentistry should be a benefit in Medicare; to at least get teeth cleaned twice a year and examined.Medicaid does provide some dental coverage, but there are limitations, and only 20 percent of dentists nationwide accept it, according to the Center for Healthcare Strategies, Inc. Dr. Silverstein says he often sees parents getting care for their children while neglecting their own. “They’ll put off going to the dentist, and by the time they realize they have a problem, it’s so expensive they don’t know what to do. Festivities started on Oct. 12, 1820, but lasted until Oct. 17. In the years that followed, the celebration was repeated, until eventually the festival was extended and moved forward.The event has taken on a life of its own, spawning German-themed events across the globe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Palomar College has placed its president on leave pending an investigation.The college district announced Wednesday that Superintendent and President Joi Lin Blake was placed on paid leave following a report warning of the college district's fiscal instability.“It is my request that we all respect the privacy of all parties at this time. Doing so will allow us to focus on the important work of the District. According to the district in the report, the 2018-19 budget had a ,220,001 deficit.The report stated that the district's salary and benefits costs "continue to increase year after year at a rate greater than revenue growth."The college district "has a high probability of fiscal insolvency in the near future" at its current pace, the report warned. The report adds that in two years the district "will have consumed all reserves and will be forced to borrow .5 million from an external source to remain solvent."The district said placing Blake on leave was not as a disciplinary action but "as a precautionary measure to protect all parties." In a corrected statement, the Palomar Community College District Board of Trustees said Assistant Superintendent and Palomar Vice President Jack Kahnh has assumed administrative responsibility of the district. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead and another person is facing life-threatening injuries after a pair of separate crashes involving Bird scooters Friday and Saturday.The first incident happened just before 9 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest. San Diego Police said a 42-year-old woman had been riding westbound in the 1200 block of University Ave. in a bike lane when, for unknown reasons, she overturned while on her Bird scooter and hit her head.The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say the woman was not wearing a helmet and had been drinking.In the second incident, a man was riding on a Bird scooter southbound in the 1400 block of Third Ave. when he was hit from behind by a vehicle just before 4 a.m., Chula Vista Police said.26-year-old Esteban Antonio Ramon Galindo died shortly after being transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center, according to police. It's not clear whether Ramon Galindo was wearing a helmet when he was hit.Police said the driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police. The cause of the crash was still under investigation Saturday. Investigators did not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 1208
