SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the COVID-related death of an Olympic gold medalist and lifelong San Diegan.More than 4 decades ago, Arnie Robinson Jr. stood at the top of the Olympic podium."He was always so driven and so focused," said Arnie Robinson Jr.'s son, PaulPaul says his father first started feeling sick in mid-November."Labored breathing, coughing," said Paul.Robinson Jr. tested positive for coronavirus but after a week and a half, he started feeling better. A week later, on December 2, he was with a caregiver at this Skyline Hills home."Out of the blue, he struggled to take breaths," said Paul. That day, Robinson Jr. passed away at his home at the age of 72."You’re just in a state of shock and disbelief over how it happened," said Paul.It was disbelief and grief over a father and local sports legend.A high school track star at Morse High, Robinson Jr. went to San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University, before winning a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1972 Olympics and a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal."I think that’s one of the things that drove him. Wanting to achieve something really, really big ... setting it out there and making it happen," said Paul. That commitment was his calling card. He served in the Army and later, worked a track coach at Mesa College for three decades. In 2004, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, a grade 4 glioblastoma and given six months to live. He went through several round of chemo and radiation."After some research, a complete 180 on his diet. Looking back on it now, he saw it as another challenge," said Paul. Some 16 years later, he was in remission when he tested positive for COVID-19. Paul believes he contracted it from one of his caregivers, who also tested positive. His message to others: wear masks and take every precaution."Respect COVID for what it is. Once COVID comes and closes in, there’s nothing you can do," said Paul.Robinson Jr.'s family has started a Gofundme campaign in hopes of seeding projects related to youth sports. 2061

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Homicide detectives are investigating after a man died in Hillcrest early Sunday morning. According to Lieutenant Anthony Dupree, a passerby was walking near Albert Street and Upas Street around 5:30 a.m. when he saw a man with trauma to his body and called police. The passerby performed life-saving efforts on the man before paramedics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Dupree said. According to police, the man was between the ages of 25 and 30, but his identity is unknown at this time. Dupree said detectives are going door-to-door in the area to find out if anyone heard anything. 635

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Defense Secretary James Mattis has signed the extension of troops at the border, a defense official confirmed to ABC News. The extension was requested by the Department of Homeland Security after hundreds of migrants rushed the San Ysidro Port of Entry in a show of force. The move means the troops will be extended through January 31. Two officials told ABC News it’s unclear how many of the 5,600 troops currently at the border will be extended. The source also said there will be a flow-in of new forces as other units flow out because their specialties are no longer needed. Engineering units were named as one of the specialties no longer needed at the southern border. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite ongoing efforts by the county and health systems to roll out the new COVID-19 vaccine, experts say communities of color find it challenging to trust the system.Roberto Alcantar with the Chicano Federation says tackling a mindset may be harder than tackling the virus."Historically, we have seen that in the black and brown community, there has been a general distrust of government," Alcantar said.New data from the Pew Research Center shows that only 42% of Black Americans say they would get a COVID-19 vaccine once it is available. In comparison, 61% percent of white, 63% of Hispanic, and 83% of Asian populations say they would get the vaccine. Not because they are anti-vaxxers. Instead, many attribute that number to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study."Horrific stories that we've heard about medical trials in the Black community back in the 1950s and 1960s in which they were things being done without their awareness," Alcantar said.It was a 40-year experiment that affected more than 600 black men who were told by the American government they were getting treatment for syphilis and other illnesses. When in reality, even after treatment was found, the men continued to get unrelated injections."So there's a lot of justification for that mistrust," Alcantar said.Locally, Latinos make up the most positive COVID numbers. But Alcantar says the level of confidence in a new vaccine is still low. He says whether it is lack of access, information, or trust, Latinos have historically sought out less care, and the pandemic has only highlighted medical inequities. That is why he believes it is important for community organizations to work with the government, not to force on the vaccine or sway people's opinions, but to build trust."There's a lot of work to do in regards to trust in government," Alcantar said. "But we're here to make sure that our communities are well-informed and have all the facts so that they can make the best decisions for themselves."The World Health Organization attributes "vaccine hesitancy" as one of the ten threats to global health. 2105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Getting an education these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. But The San Diego Foundation has millions in scholarship money to award to local students pursuing a variety of secondary education options. Students like Jawid Habib, who received money through several years of college and law school. As the son of Afghan immigrants, Habib says his accomplishments meant a great deal, "I'll never forget the moment that I got my college acceptance letter at UCSD and I handed it to my mom and I'll never forget the tears in her eyes and I'll never forget the tears in my father's eyes when they saw that acceptance letter."As happy as that moment was, the reality of paying for school was still a challenge, until he found the Foundation. "It gave me peace of mind, that's one of the biggest things it gave me peace of mind because I was more focused on success rather than focused on how to afford my education," Habib said.Danielle Valenciano is the director of community scholarships at the foundation and tells 10News that last year the non-profit gave out more than .6 million to nearly 900 students. "If we're able to help offset hunger or homelessness or their books or a bus pass so they can get to school every day, we're doing our job as a community to help these students succeed," Valenciano said. The application process for next year is already underway, and there's money for all kinds of education, including community college, career and technical schools and teaching credential programs. Valenciano also says some of their donors are looking for so-called diamonds in the rough, "Students who may not have the best high school grades but there's something there and they have aspirations and they have a goal, these donors want to help these students."And hopefully give them an opportunity to achieve their goals, like Habib who is now a practicing attorney. 1921
