IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Some South Bay parents said they are frustrated with their internet company after they learned of planned outages during the middle of the school day.Michael Crawford’s daughter is in her first year of high school and like many local students, is starting the year online. Crawford said the transition to virtual learning has not been easy for her. When he learned of the Cox communications outage planned for Tuesday, Crawford said it only added insult to injury. According to a notice he received on his door Friday, the planned service outage was slated to begin at 5 a.m. and last until three in the afternoon.He called Cox Communications, but did not get any answers. “I spent an hour on the phone with them. The lady seemed very sympathetic at first and then she [came] back on the phone and said there’s nothing we could do about it,” Crawford said.His neighbors received the same notice about the planned outage. Crawford questioned why the company doesn’t perform the work later in the day or on the weekends.“I pay them 0 a month for my services and that’s just my house,” Crawford said. “This is a lot of money they’re making and I don’t see why they can’t just pay some overtime for a Saturday. We’re all making sacrifices right now and even the big companies need to make the sacrifices as well.”A Cox Communications spokesperson confirmed the outage due to network upgrades. She said the time on the notice is a window and the average time that a customer is without service is two hours.“We recognize the inconvenience to our customers,” said spokesperson Ceanne Guerra. “Our crews are working really hard to complete this work as quickly as possible. This work is going to support their changing needs as they’re working from home and schooling from home.”Guerra said while they do work during off-peak hours, it is not possible to do so all the time.ABC 10News contacted the Sweetwater Union High School District regarding what students should do during any internet outages. “We ask students to work with teachers individually to ensure they receive their assignments and can work offline as best possible,” said spokesperson Manny Rubio. 2192

One class has been helping people overcome the fear for decades, by debunking some of the concerns keeping you on the ground."The plane just dropped suddenly," one woman remembers."We actually went up in an airplane and found out afterwards we had gone up in a hurricane," another woman recalls."What really scares me is somebody blowing something up on purpose," one traveler says."I actually thought I was going to die, says another traveler."It's led to some odd routines. "I have to like touch all four sides of the door on the way in and you know with the seats," says one passenger. Students learn it's not the fear that's the problem but the way they think about it. And once that changes so does the fear."It's not easy to do because you do have a whole set up of automatic beliefs that are causing you trouble," says one of the class instructors.That's why debunking students' biggest fears is so important."I have some very disappointing news for you all about turbulence," says commercial pilot Captain Mark Connell. "We don't care. It doesn't make much difference to us."As scary as it might feel, Captain Connell compares a plane hitting turbulence to a car hitting a pothole. He covers everything from turbulence and weather, to pilot training and preparedness."There's something helpful about that to think to yourself well he flies planes all the time and he's not scared so I probably shouldn't be scared either," says Mimi Kravetz.Kravetz has been scared of flying since she was 10."When there's turbulence on an airplane, my heart starts beating quicker. I feel really panicky. I can't focus. I can't sleep and I wanted to get out of that feeling," Kravetz says.Now she's ready to face her fear. "It'll be interesting on Monday to try and go in to see if I can replace my current set of thoughts with a set of new ones," Kravetz says.And get into the air with as much ease as the plane she's riding in.      2351

Humans haven’t been to the moon in decades, but when mankind returns, they’ll be welcomed with cellphone technology not currently available in some reaches of the US.Nokia announced this week a partnership with NASA to construct a 4G network on the moon. The network will assist NASA's Artemis program, which is intended to send people back to the moon by 2024.Nokia says that its 4G moon network will allow for NASA to operate rovers and stream high-definition video.“Reliable, resilient and high-capacity communications networks will be key to supporting sustainable human presence on the lunar surface. By building the first high performance wireless network solution on the moon, Nokia Bell Labs is once again planting the flag for pioneering innovation beyond the conventional limits,” said Marcus Weldon, Chief Technology Officer at Nokia.On Wednesday, NASA said it will “announce an exciting new discovery” about the moon next week. If you haven’t heard of Virgin Hyperloop One by now, pay attention; The company is making huge advancements in the race to develop the future of transportation.Imagine traveling between cities that are hundreds of miles apart in just a matter of minutes. The company says not only are they close to making it a reality, they're closer to doing it than you might think.In May, Virgin Hyperloop One orchestrated a test track, called DevLoop, in the middle of a desert miles outside of Las Vegas. It was the first full-scale test of the hyperloop concept, which was first introduced by Elon Musk in 2014.  Dr. Anita Sengupta, senior vice president at Hyperloop One, leads the team in charge of making this technology come together. Prior to joining Virgin Hyperloop One, Dr. Sengupta spent most of her career at NASA and was a member of the team that helped land a rover on Mars.“I spent most of my career working at NASA. I'm used to working with vacuum chambers; I'm used to working with electromagnetic propulsion systems," says Dr. Sengupta.Working on hyperloop reminds her of working on spacecraft, traveling hundreds of miles per hour through a vacuum tube in a magnetically levitating pod. Each pod is designed to fit 9 to 12 people. She believes it will remind passengers of a plane, but better."You don't have the traditional experiences you have in aircraft,” she explains. “There's no such thing as turbulence, right, because you actually have no air around you on the outside of the pod, so the ride is actually going to be a lot smoother. You're not even going to be able to tell that you're going that fast."Their last speed test reached 240 miles per hour, only limited, she says, by the length of the track. At full speed, they want to see pods travel about 700 miles per hour."Faster than a commercial airplane," says Dr. Sengupta.Hyperloop One hopes to have tracks operating within the next two to three years."I think it’s fair to say by 2023, we could have an operational hyperloop," she says.Right now, the company is working on feasibility studies in several states, to see where they could build their first routes."This would be a service that everyday people can use,” says Dr. Sengupta. “Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to build it. "Hyperloop One isn’t the only company working to make the hyperloop concept a reality. Musk and SpaceX have been explicit that the concept be open-sourced, encouraging others to develop the transportation. The tech mogul, as well as another company called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, are in the race and working on their own hyperloop plans.So, how much will this cost? Who will pay for it?  Virgin Hyperloop One anticipates a public-private partnership."When it comes to infrastructure projects, you need to have a strong coalition of government, business community, and local community," says Dr. Sengupta.In the meantime, she and her team will keep working."This is high time to come up with a new mode of mass transportation, she says."We are reinventing transportation and doing it out here in the desert."Earlier this month, the company announced plans to build a 0 million research center in Bobadilla, a tiny village in southern Spain. It will be the Los Angeles-based company’s first off-site location in Europe.The site is slated to open in 2020 and will be used to test, develop and certify components to improve safety and reliability of their systems. If you're planning on voting with an absentee or mail-in ballot, chances are you feel pretty protected from COVID-19 while voting this year. But what if you're voting in-person? Experts weigh in on staying safe when heading to your polling place. The first piece of advice is to have a plan."The example I would give would be going to the grocery store. That's something that caused people a lot of anxiety when we first were dealing with the pandemic back in March, and I think for many of us, it’s becoming relatively routine. It's not how we shopped for groceries back in January but it's something that we’ve learned to do. I think voting can be the same," said Dr. Jay Varkey, an infectious disease doctor and Associate Professor at Emory University.Dr. Varkey says to know the COVID-19 transmission rates in your community, as well as your own personal risk, if you were to become infected with COVID-19."To give some specific examples, masking is absolute, and I would want to make sure that there is a universal mask mandate in place and not just those that are going to cast their votes but workers as well," said Dr. Varkey.Dr. Varkey says wearing a mask that has at least two layers and wearing it properly is key. Also, ensure your polling place allows you to socially distance from other voters. Dr. Varkey says standing more than 6 feet away from others is preferred. Also, it’s great if your polling place is keeping doors and windows open to increase airflow."The other thing, and I know this is hard to do, the more we can actually limit the amount of talking, or certainly yelling or singing or anything else going on, is the more we can reduce our chances of passing these infectious droplets that can aerosolize, and that tends to really occur when people are talking. Masks reduce that risk, but we can really reduce it more by, well, talking less," says Dr. Varkey.In Madison, Wisconsin, poll workers will be ensuring voters are socially-distanced and frequently disinfecting all voting booths, pens and other frequently touched items. City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl has been working closely with their local health department."We will have plexiglass glass set up for stations where poll workers have to interact with voters within 6 feet of each other, and for other poll workers who are not at those stations, they’ll have access to face shields if they like," said Witzel-Behl.Poll workers are also being told to follow a strict set of health guidelines in order to volunteer."If they've had a fever within the last few days or taken a fever-reducing medication in the past few days, they can’t work at the poll. If they've had any COVID-19 symptoms or been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or had a cough within the past week they can’t work at the polls," said Witzel-Behl.So, do you need to bring a container of disinfecting wipes with you to the polls?"I put the priority first on the masks and keeping your distance but that last part on how to take a relatively safe activity, like voting and make it extra safe, there’s two things I would bring with me into the voting booth.
