SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Padres are scheduled to face an opponent at Petco Park for the first time in 2020 Monday, nearly four months later than planned, playing the Los Angeles Angels in an exhibition game.The March 26 start to the regular season -- which included the Padres opening day game against the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park -- was all wiped out by the coronavirus outbreak.Under the revised schedule which calls for the regular season to begin Thursday, teams can play up to three exhibition games. The Padres other exhibition game will be on Wednesday, also against the Angels, at Angel Stadium, in preparation for opening day Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park."I think everybody's excited to play somebody else," Padres first-year manager Jayce Tingler told reporters in a Zoom conference Friday. "We've been banging heads for a while. It's going to be really good getting to see another team and just getting to go compete."The Padres played 16 intrasquad games since beginning "summer camp" July 3.Like most sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from attending Monday's game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings.The game will be different from Padre games in past seasons for several reasons.Major League Baseball has instituted a set of health and safety protocols that will effect the game even before the first pitch. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county's flu death toll inched closer to 70 last week, while lab-confirmed flu cases continued to decline, the county's Health and Human Services announced today.The county received one report of a flu-related death last week, a 74-year-old North County man who had additional medical issues. County health officials did not disclose whether he had received this flu season's vaccine. The county's flu death toll now sits at 68.The county confirmed 86 flu cases last week, down from 114 cases during the prior week. Confirmed flu cases have declined for six consecutive weeks since reaching a season-high of 692 in mid-March. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council unanimously voted Monday to amend the Mission Bay Park Master Plan to add a large fenced-in, off-leash dog park to the southwest corner of Fiesta Island. The council considered two options to update Fiesta Island's southwest section, which is partially undeveloped. The plan dubbed ``option A'' would have reserved much of the area for a smaller fenced-in, off-leash dog park while also including a launching area for non-motorized boats, a road extension through the park and a dedicated swimming beach. Option B, which the council chose to adopt, will allocate almost all of the southwest area as a fenced-in dog park with adjacent parking spaces and walking trails surrounding it. The dog park, parking and walking trails will span roughly 470 acres, according to the city. City officials developed the amendment options to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan for roughly two years. The vast majority of public speakers at the council meeting voiced their support for option B, arguing it will preserve existing habitats and serve as the only off-leash dog area in Mission Bay Park. ``I'm a strong supporter of everything we can do to keep Fiesta Island in its most natural form,'' said City Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell. ``Preservation of open space is so very, very important.'' In addition to support for the dog park, option B's supporters argued it would cost less than option A because the city would not have to make significant modifications to the area such as adding a paved road through the park. City Councilman Scott Sherman suggested the city should look into designating the South Shores boat launching area as a launching port for non- motorized boats as well in an effort to appease non-motorized boat owners. South Shores, located across the bay from the south end of Fiesta Island, is used sparingly by boat and watercraft owners and includes all of the amenities that option A would have added to Fiesta Island. City officials told Sherman they would start the process to modify South Shores' usage. ``South Shores is incredibly underutilized and we spent a whole bunch of money building that thing in the first place,'' Sherman said. ``It would be really nice to see more utilization of that spot.'' 2275
