CREST, Calif. (KGTV) - The forward rate of spread of the Dehesa Fire burning in East County has been stopped, Cal Fire tweeted just after 5 p.m. The flames broke out about 3 p.m. east of Dehesa and Sloane Canyon Roads near Sycuan Casino, Cal Fire officials told 10News. Sky10 video indicated the flames were on a ridge above the Sweetwater River and Beaver Hollow.By 8 p.m. the fire had burned 200 acres and was 10 percent contained, Cal Fire reported. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office tweeted evacuations were underway for a "handful of structures" at Sycuan Truck Trail and Japatul Road. Employees of the nearby Dehesa School District offices were told to go home. By 8 p.m., all evacuations were lifted. Fire danger was increased due to dry weather Tuesday. Check conditions here."Today will bring mild Santa Ana winds with gusts of 25 to 35 miles per hour far inland to the mountains with humidity down to 15 to 30 percent with elevated fire danger," said 10News Meteorologist Angelica Campos. There was no indication of what may have caused the fire. The agency said it had 26 fire engines, 12 hand crews, and 3 water tenders on scene to mop up and construct containment lines Tuesday night. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Every June 6 that passes marks one more year since a historic day in world history: D-Day. Coronado local Tom Rice was there. He was part of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.Seventy six years ago, Rice jumped out of a plane onto the beaches of Normandy, not knowing it would become a turning point in World War II. Since 1944, Rice works to commemorate the day. In recent years, he’s returned to France to re-enact D-Day, jumping out of a plane like he did during the war. This year, it’s different. Coronavirus has impacted his ability to travel overseas, so he has a new way to honor the day. It started with Carentan, the area in France where he usually jumps, deciding to ring a bell at 6:44 p.m. to commemorate the June of 1944 date. Then, Rice and his army of friends in San Diego decided to turn it into something larger. At 6:44 p.m. local time, Rice rung a bell at the Coronado Naval Base, and he wasn’t alone. Friends and supporters all rang bells at the same time to mark the anniversary. “Globally the bells will ring for thee. For those who died, who were captured, who suffered all the deprivations that war can bring,” said Rice. At 98-years-old, the veteran has jumped out of a plane 63 times, and 48 of those were with the military. 1319

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Coronado Unified School District is mourning the loss of one of their most popular crossing guards. Bruce Campbell, or Mr. Bruce as the kids knew him, passed away on Monday. According to his brother, Bruce was at work Monday when he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. Campbell went into cardiac arrest and passed away on his way to the hospital. Students and parents set up a memorial on the corner of Sixth and F Street, where he worked every day for the last several years. His brother tells 10News he died doing the job he loved most. In a statement, the district told the Coronado Times that school counselors will be working with students as needed. Bruce Campbell was 68 years old.  770

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- World War II veteran Tom Rice has a lot of war stories. “All that we did was new and experimental because we had experimental and brand new equipment that we weren’t supposed to tell anyone about,” said Rice.Rice grew up on Coronado. He joined the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper in 1941 after graduating high school.“I’d never been in a plane. I’d hardly ever seen any planes because I always lived right here.”After training in Georgia, Rice parachuted into Normandy on D-Day. “I’m in the door looking out straight and I could just see all the fireworks coming up. It was, it felt like a Fourth of July thing. When I stepped out, the prop blast hit me. So I’m hanging on the outside and the rest of the guys are going underneath me.”Rice landed safely even though a bullet struck his parachute. “I was black and blue for about three weeks.” He went on to win several Purple Hearts and France’s Legion of Honor.Despite being 97-years-old, Rice still parachutes out of an airplane every year on the anniversary of D-Day to pay tribute to his fellow paratroopers. “I’ll keep jumping until I’m 100.”In honor of his courage, Rice will be the Grand Marshal of Sunday’s Mother Goose Parade, the same parade he enjoyed with his children decades ago.“There’s going to be an awful lot of people there. It’s going to be something.”The parade is in it’s 72nd year. It begins Sunday, November 18, at 1 p.m. The route travels along Main Street from El Cajon Boulevard to 1st Street. 1514
