CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Thursday's heavy storm caused significant damage in the North County Plaza shopping center in Carlsbad, particularly to Homeroom Hourly Child Care. Homeroom's owner tells 10News that current estimates are it will take six weeks to repair all the damage to the interior."I was pretty pessimistic last night," assistant director Erin Devries told 10News. "I just thought this place was a complete loss."RELATED: Video: Heavy rain leads to flooding across San Diego CountyDevries said there were seven or eight children present Thursday afternoon when one of the children noticed water leaking from the ceiling. Shorty after, tiles began falling from the ceiling, along with a deluge of rain. Out of fear of danger from a soaked electrical system, the teachers turned out the lights, then evacuated the children from the building, seeking shelter in the Orange Theory gym next door. A crew worked late into the night pumping out the water. While some of the infrastructure can be saved, many of the child care center's contents, such as toys and other play items, will need to be thrown away and replaced to ensure the safety of the children when they return."I feel hopeful now, " Devries said. "Seeing all the stuff they can fix. Six weeks sounds insanely long, but it's better than having to close down indefinitely."Devries says Homeroom's unexpected closure is putting their clients in a tough position. Certain grocery stores are opening DSW, Designer Shoe Warehouse, shop-in-shops.Hy-Vee announced the partnership this week, saying two of their locations in the Twin Cities area have DSW displays inside with four more locations scheduled to open in the next few weeks.The DSW shop-in-shops will allow customers to try on shoes, selecting from a variety of styles and brands. Some stores will have lockers, allowing customers to order shoes online and pick them up in Hy-Vee stores.The shop-in-shop set-ups feature a wall of 100 shoes displaying top trends of the season. Customers can order by scanning a code on the shoes, and having them delivered to their home or store.“By combining in-store and online shopping experiences together with DSW, we are able to meet the unique needs of every shopper and make the shopping experience — whether in-store, online or both, seamless,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman, president and CEO.DSW told CNN they plan on having more than 2,000 shoes in each Hy-Vee location.Hy-Vee has more than 270 stores across eight states, and says they plan to open more DSW shop-in-shops in each state they have stores. 1157

A vacation home to Leo Carrillo from the TV show "The Cisco Kid." Once a massive ranch, now transformed into an 1800 acre city park in Carlsbad. Mick Calarco, Project Manager with the City of Carlsad calls the park a "manifestation of Carrillo's childhood dreams." Million- dollar homes now surround the park, but it was once a sprawling and working ranch with livestock and wild animals. Peacocks still roam the property, original descendants of the birds Carrillo bought for the ranch."You can truly lose yourself out here," said Calarco. The old adobe buildings have been beautifully restored to their original splendor. Carrillo bought the property in 1937. His famous friends, including Clark Gable would often visit the ranch. In every building you can see Carrillo's vision for preserving early ranch architecture. Adobe was a central theme in Leo's remembrance of of his childhood ranches. After Carrillo's daughter, Tony, left the estate, the buildings began to fall apart. The City of Carlsbad acquired the remaining 10.5-acre ranch in 1977. It now serves as a park to educate and advocate for ranch preservation and restoration. The park is open daily 9 A.M.- 5 p.m. 1359

CHICAGO, Ill. – A 9-year-old boy held his own Black Lives Matter protest in his front yard over the weekend to inspire others to support racial justice.Katya Kelley told WLS that a neighbor encouraged families living in their Chicago neighborhood to draw hearts in their driveways in solidarity with the protests over George Floyd’s death. So, her son Aiden grabbed a bucket of chalk and got to work.The boy covered the sidewalk in front of his home in drawings of things like hearts, flags and hands embracing.However, Aiden wanted to make his message more direct after learning more about the Black Lives Matter movement, so he decided to make a sign to walk around with.Aiden told WLS that he just wanted to support everyone and make sure they felt happy, because of the events of the past few weeks. Katya said she was taken aback by her son's enthusiasm to help bring about change.A neighbor ended up snapping a photo of Aiden and posted it to Twitter, where it's been liked and retweeted thousands of times. 1021
