For the first time in recorded history researchers have not observed sea ice formation along the Siberian Coast of the Arctic Sea this late into the year. The region, according to researchers, usually starts generating thick layers of ice in the later part of September and early parts of October.“It was really hard to find a solid chunk of ice to freeze the ship into,” said Colorado State University researcher Jessie Creamean, who has spent the last six years traveling to the Arctic Sea to study the ice. “It was really astounding that it was so hard to find this thick ice that should be there but isn’t anymore.”In February, Creamean spent time aboard the world’s largest icebreaker ship, Mosaic, and said the changes were visible to the naked eye and not just on satellite imagery.“It’s getting warmer so we’re losing sea ice, but because we lose the sea ice it becomes even warmer,” said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center. “It exacerbates the problem of climate change.”Serreze says the loss of sea ice has started a trend where warmer water from the Atlantic Ocean moves into the Arctic Sea and layers itself under the colder water before permeating to the surface, causing the Arctic Sea to warm at a faster rate.It also allows cargo ships to travel a route that has historically been impassable, creating geopolitical incentives for nations to try and control the region.“We’re seeing issues of tensions between the United States and Russia which, of course, is an Arctic nation starting to arise,” said Serreze. “Russia is strongly militarizing the Artic right now so there are many things that are occurring at that level because of the changes we’re seeing so it’s a great example of how climate change and geopolitics are becoming intertwined.” 1797

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The headmaster of Evangelical Christian School sent an email saying a teacher was fired after admitting sexual misconduct with a student. The email said a female upper school teacher has had her position terminated, effective immediately. Deputies arrested 35-year-old Suzanne Owens, charging her with custodial sexual battery, the Lee County Sheriff's Office said. An investigation revealed she had one sexual encounter off campus with a male student. They communicated via text messages for several weeks before the incident, deputies said. Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers reached out to the school, but have not heard back yet.The full text of the headmaster's message is below:  736

FORTVILLE, Ind. — A central Indiana superintendent gave students some fun "assignments" to complete on the first snow day of the year. With the institution of virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, many families thought snow days to be a thing of the past for students. But when snowfall led to messy roads across parts of Indiana, there were still several dozen schools that chose to either delay or cancel classes.Dr. Jack Parker, Superintendent at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation sent a letter to parents canceling in-person learning in favor of virtual learning — but not the type of virtual learning typically seen amid the pandemic. The note to parents went on to give two assignments that included playing in the snow and throwing snowballs."Students will use the scientific process in planning appropriate clothing to remain warm and dry while spending time outside. Once the hypothesis has been identified, and appropriate attire has been secured, students will be expected to test their theory by going outdoors and playing in the snow," Parker's note read. "Step two of this assignment will be to practice the skills of estimation and measurement when throwing snowballs at one another while maintaining a minimum of 6' of distance with others outside of your household. When being with said snowball, students are expected to practice their social skills and to use their good words."He even gave students a chance to earn some extra credit. "Extra credit can be earned by helping to shovel sidewalks and/or driveways," Parker wrote. And of course, students who aren't feeling well were given an alternate assignment to complete."Students who are not feeling well will be expected to complete the alternative assignment of resting indoors and drinking plenty of fluids," the letter read. 1822

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed Senate Bill 7026 into law Friday, the first gun control legislation enacted in the state after the Parkland school massacre on February 14.The new law, known as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, tightens gun control in several ways but also allows some teachers to be armed."The hardest thing I've ever had to do as governor is try to console a parent who has lost a child," said Scott, surrounded by families of the victims. Scott received the bill Thursday following days of impassioned, often contentious debate in the majority-Republican House and Senate.  631

For pets, the skies of United Airlines lately have not been so friendly. It's not just the French bulldog that died on a Houston-to-New York flight Monday after a United flight attendant told its owners to put the dog in an overhead bin.Data from the US Department of Transportation show that three times as many animals died on United flights last year than on all the other US carriers put together. As you can see from this chart, 2017 wasn't an exception.United has had the highest rate of pet deaths of any US airline for the past three years. In fairness, the airline in recent years has also been the largest transporter of animals -- mostly dogs and cats, but also more exotic pets such as birds and geckos. Also, according to the DOT report for 2017, several of the animals had pre-existing health issues such as heart disease. (The report did not specify how many animals were flown in the cargo hold as opposed to the plane's cabin.)But even when accounting for their larger volume of animal passengers, United still leads all other airlines in rate of deaths per 10,000 pets.United did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this story. But spokesman Charlie Hobart told CNN on Tuesday that the airline is investigating the French bulldog's death "to prevent this from ever happening again."As for the 2017 report, he said, "The overwhelming majority of the incidents were attributed to animals not being acclimated to its crate or the animal having a pre-existing condition we weren't aware of. Any time there is an incident with animals we do a thorough review." 1612
