ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in Escondido are joining law enforcement throughout the state in cracking down on distracted driving throughout April.Throughout the month, the city is deploying extra traffic officers thanks to grant-funded resources. Violators will be stopped and cited with fines set at 2 for first-time offenders. On April 5 and April 13, law enforcement officials all over the state are set to step up distracted driving enforcement.According to authorities, officers have issued hundreds of thousands of citations over the past three years to those texting or calling while driving.Recent legislation has even gone as far as to make it illegal to use a smartphone’s apps while driving."California’s distracted driving laws have been saving lives for a decade now,” said former State Senator Joe Simitian, who authored the state’s hands-free and no-texting laws. “Every day, somewhere in California, someone is sitting down to dinner with their family who wouldn't have made it through the day without these laws on the books. That’s tremendously gratifying.”Data from 2017 shows that nearly 22,000 were involved in distracted driving crashes throughout California.“Traffic safety has consistently been a top priority in Escondido,” said Chief Craig Carter. “If our enforcement and education campaign to eliminate distracted driving saves even one life, I would consider that a success.” 1420

Enterprise is the latest company committing to causes that will help improve racial equity and fight hunger. The company's ROAD Forward initiative was developed in response to the death of George Floyd. Through it, the company's foundation will give million to four nonprofits. The company says it chose the nonprofits, because they work to address social gaps in three critical areas: early childhood development, youth health and wellness, and career or college prep. The organizations had no idea these donations were in the works.“It's an amazing affirmation of what we do and what we've been doing and where we hope to go,” said Constance Gully, President and CEO of Parents as Teachers.Parents as Teachers uses home visits to help families of color with newborns through kindergarten entry. Its plan is to use the funds to fill gaps in their framework.“We see them now. We see people, so that's what I think the corporate community can do is see and hear people and communities that have unfortunately been literally invisible,” said Gully.Another recipient is Girls Inc., which offers social and emotional support to mostly minority and low-income families outside of school.“These are the girls who need the most support, but they also have an incredible amount of potential,” said Stephanie Hull, President and CEO of Girls Inc. “Girls will be important in the future, girls in these communities will be important in shaping the future and an investment in these girls right now is a significant step toward a better tomorrow.”The initiative will also commit million to fight food insecurity and global operating teams will allocate million to local charities. 1685

Federal investigators are looking into whether a huge wildfire near Los Angeles was sparked by Southern California Edison utility equipment. Edison says it has turned over a section of an overhead conductor from the utility’s facility near a dam in the area where the Bobcat Fire started Sept. 6. The initial report of fire was near Cogswell Dam at 12:21 p.m. Sept. 6. The utility says five minutes earlier, at 12:16 p.m., a circuit at the substation experienced a possible disturbance or event. Edison says cameras captured smoke developing in the area around 12:10 p.m., prior to the activity on Edison’s circuit. As of Thursday, there are still 26 ongoing wildfires in California being fought by 18,200 firefighters. In the last six weeks, fires have consumed 6,700 buildings and have killed 26 people. Crews say that cooler weather in the state is helping firefighters make progress on the wildfires, which have consumed 3.6 million acres of land in the state since the start of the year. 999
