SAN FRANCISCO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday released a new stable version of its Chrome web browser, which the company said is speedier, simpler and safer."With today's stable release, even your most complex web apps will run more quickly and responsively in the browser," Tim Steele, a Google software engineer, said in a blog post announcing the release.The new version of Chrome features a simpler settings page that opens in a tab rather than a dialog box, and contains a search box showing users the settings they are looking for while they type.Users can also synchronize passwords in the browser across their computers, and will be able to encrypt those passwords for extra security.Google said that the latest Chrome browser provides additional layer of protection against malicious web pages, with the extended application of sandboxing technology.The browser can be downloaded for free, and current Chrome users will be automatically updated to the new version soon, Google said.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Google Inc. on Monday announced that it is bidding for patent portfolio of Nortel Networks in the bankruptcy auction for the Canadian telecommunications equipment maker.In a press release, the Toronto-based Nortel said Google has agreed to buy all of its remaining patents and patent applications for 900 million U.S. dollars in cash.Nortel, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009, expects the auction to be held in June this year, pending Canadian and U.S. court approvals.Nortel has selected Google's bid as the "stalking-horse bid," or the starting point against which others will bid prior to the auction.The agreement with Google includes the planned sale of about 6, 000 Nortel patents and patent applications spanning wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, optical, voice, Internet, service provider and semiconductors.According to Nortel, the patent portfolio touches nearly every aspect of telecommunications and additional markets, including Internet search and social networking."This is an unprecedented opportunity to acquire one of the most extensive and compelling patent portfolios to ever come on the market," George Riedel, Nortel's chief strategy officer, said in a statement.Google argued that the bid would help protect it from patent litigation and foster innovation.The technology industry has recently seen an explosion in patent litigation, often involving low-quality software patents, which threatens to stifle innovation, Kent Walker, Google's general counsel, said in a blog post, believing the best defense against such litigation is to have a "formidable patent portfolio. WELLINGTON, May 24 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand researchers have found a way to stop the growth of certain cancer tumors by " silencing" a group of PAX genes, members of a small family of genes that play important roles in embryonic development, but also allow cancer cells to grow and divide in adult tissue.In an article published in UK medical journal Oncogene, Otago University Professor Michael Eccles and colleagues revealed how they used the PAX8 gene to kill cancer cells.After detecting high levels of PAX8 protein in the majority of kidney, ovarian and thyroid cancers they studied, the researchers used molecular techniques to silence the PAX8 gene in several cancer cell lines."We found that these PAX8-depleted cancer cells ceased growing and dividing. The cells were essentially stopped in their tracks through the failure of multiple mechanisms and pathways crucial to their cell division cycle. They then entered into a state called senescence in which they no longer divided, and after that they ultimately died," Eccles said in a statement from the university Tuesday.The findings suggested that PAX8 could be a good target for the development of new cancer therapies, he said."Any resulting drugs would be a long way down the road, but in the meantime this research helps confirm that a focus on PAX genes may prove to be a fruitful line of attack against a number of cancers," he said.The research was supported by grants from the Health Research Council of New Zealand. It formed the main piece of work carried out by Otago doctoral graduate Caiyun (Grace) Li, now a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. Study co-authors also included Professor Antony Braithwaite and master's student Jen Nyman.In 2003, research led by Eccles discovered that proteins from one or more of the nine PAX genes were present in many common cancers. They found that "silencing" the gene expression of PAX2 in ovarian and bladder cancer cells, and of PAX3 in melanoma, led to the rapid death of the cells.
