SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist was killed when his car was struck by a trolley after he drove past a trolley crossing gate in the Valencia Park area, police said Tuesday.The crash happened around 11:45 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Merlin Drive and Imperial Avenue, east of Valencia Parkway, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 22-year-old man was driving a Toyota Prius southbound on 60th Street toward Imperial Avenue when he drove past trolley crossing arms and was struck by an eastbound trolley, Buttle said. The impact pushed the vehicle about 100 feet down the tracks.The victim, the only occupant of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Flames tore through a Mira Mesa home Wednesday afternoon, causing extensive damage, injuring a firefighter and displacing five residents.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 2 p.m. in the 10100 block of Embassy Way, just west of Camino Ruiz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.All the occupants of the house were able to safely get outside prior to the arrival of emergency crews, according to SDFRD public affairs.Watch firefighters battle the fire below:Firefighters arrived to find the residence engulfed in flames. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said.The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder.The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck. The prosecutor said Alvarez then threw Wagley to the ground and stabbed him several more times.Modlin said that following his release from prison, Alvarez failed to report to Post Release Community Supervision and committed the murder 16 days later.It was uncertain what crime Alvarez was serving time for, though the criminal complaint alleges he has prior San Diego County convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.In addition to murder, Alvarez faces allegations of using a knife in the slaying.He was being held without bail, but a bail review hearing was set for Friday. 1627

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call Monday for any additional alleged victims of a 35-year-old man accused of running a loan sharking scheme primarily targeting Latinos in San Diego County.FBI agents and Escondido police detectives arrested Hamze Mohamad Karnib, who goes by Alex Karnib, Thursday at his San Marcos home on suspicion of extortion and making criminal threats, FBI spokeswoman Davene Butler said.Karnib allegedly targeted Latinos and demanded repayment well above the amounts borrowed by his victims, Butler said. He then allegedly intimidated and threatened borrowers who couldn't meet his demands.He was being held in lieu of ,000 pending arraignment, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8, according to jail records."Threatening and criminal behavior that targets the Latino or any other members of our community will not be tolerated," San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement.
