BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Friday that members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) should better comprehend the Scientific Outlook on Development and use it to guide their work.     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, called for intensified efforts of CPC members to study the gist of the recently concluded Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee and incorporate the requirements of Scientific Outlook on Development into daily work and life.     Xi made the remarks at a meeting on further studying and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development.     The Scientific Outlook on Development stresses people-oriented, comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable economic and social development.     The Fourth Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee, which concluded on Sept. 18, decided to expand democracy within the Party and further fight corruption.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday that Shanghai and Chicago can learn from each other especially on clean energy.     He made the remarks during a dialogue with Chinese students at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. It is his first trip to China since taking office in January.     "It's a terrific opportunity for us to learn from each other," he said.     "In the United States we are learning how to develop buildings that use much less energy and that are much more energy-efficient. I noticed in Shanghai many new buildings are growing up. It's important to incorporate these new technologies so that each building is energy-efficient when it comes to lighting, when it comes to heating," he said.     Clean energy issue is going to be a major focus in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, he said.     Shanghai and Chicago have been sister cities since 1985.

RIYADH, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Saudi Arabia convened Sunday the fourth meeting of their joint committee on economy and trade in the Saudi capital, co-chaired by Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming and Saudi Minister of Finance Ibrahim bin Abdel Aziz al-Asaf.     Chen hailed the rapid growth of bilateral economic and trade ties since the third meeting of the joint committee in 2006, noting that bilateral trade have realized two years in advance the goal of 40 billion U.S. dollars by 2010, and Saudi Arabia has been China's biggest trade partner in West Asia for eight consecutive years. DATONG, Shanxi, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called for renovating the hovels in urban areas and at state-owned factories and mines across the country to better the livelihood of needy people.     Renovation of all squatter homes in cities and at state-owned factories and mines should be completed in the next fives years. Those hovels at state-owned forest zones, reclamation areas and coal mines will be renovated within three years, Li told a national meeting.     Different kinds of government funds will be used in the renovation work, and private investment will be encouraged, Li said, adding that favorable tax and land policies will be implemented.     He said the renovation efforts should be open and transparent and respect the wishes of the broad masses. Efforts should be made to avoid corruption.     Li said China will promote the building of low-rent houses to meet people's basic needs for housing.     By the end of 2008, China has 11.48 million families living in hovels, 7.44 million of which live in cities, 2.38 million nearby state-owned plants and mines, 1.66 million in forest zones and reclamation areas.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Canada would like to further economic ties with China, said visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper here on Friday.     Harper announced the launch of four new trade offices in China by the Canadian government in cooperation with the Canadian Commercial Cooperation at a welcome banquet here Friday night. During this period, Canadian exports to China have grown by more than 3 billion dollars.     The total bilateral trade is now valued at over 53 billion dollars. China is Canada's second largest merchandise trading partner and third largest export market.
