SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Albertsons Companies confirmed Saturday an employee of an Escondido grocery store tested positive for COVID-19.The company said the store will remain open, and "will continue to follow an enhanced cleaning and disinfection process in every department."Public Affairs Director Melissa Hill said that the employee is receiving care and has not worked at the store since March 24. Hill said the Escondido store has been through multiple sanitizing and disinfecting cycles, and used third-party expert service.Hill said the store is monitoring other staff for symptoms."Following CDC guidelines, our Crisis Response Team may recommend that additional members of the store team self-quarantine. These employees will be eligible to receive up to 14 days of quarantine pay," said Hill.The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135 President Todd Walters said they have been working with companies to get higher safety measures into the workplaces of members.He said three members of the union tested positive as of Saturday. He said they were all at different locations in San Diego County."We're encouraging and asking the members to 1. Make sure they get their social distance. 2. We want them to get time every 30 minutes to stop, wash their hands and clean their work stations," he said.Walters said Plexiglas has been installed at check out stands to protect workers at Albertsons and Vons, and next week Ralphs and Food For Less will see the same installation.He said employees are tired from the long shifts and urged the public to realize supplies aren't going anywhere. "Please don't shop unless you have to, there's no need to horde. If you see these retail workers, not just grocery, but our drug store members, or other retail entities, give them space. If they're trying to work and you need something, call out to them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surfer was found unconscious, face down in the water near Pacific Beach early Wednesday.San Diego lifeguards were notified of the woman in her 30's just after 8 a.m. inside the surf zone at Tourmaline Surf Park.10News spoke to Jason Glover, a paddleboard surfer who set up a robot-camera on the beach to capture surf videos. One of the clips captured the audio of the exact moment bystanders found the woman unconscious.“Hey! Hey! Call 9-1-1,” they said. Fellow surfers immediately pulled her out of the water and started CPR. Lifeguards continued life-saving efforts once they arrived, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz.The woman began breathing again and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital, but her condition was not immediately known.“They immediately brought her in. But that’s what surfers do. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A similar Observation Wheel to those in England and Paris could come to Balboa Park for a short term stay.The Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America presented the idea of the Balboa Park Star to the Balboa Park Committee Meeting on October 1.They hope the wheel would attract more visitors and re-energize the park."We have operated these observation wheels during the pandemic," Vice President of Sky Views of America Ben Pickett said.The gondolas are enclosed and climate controlled. According to the presentation, they are sanitized after each ride and safety protocols comply with state, local and CDC guidelines. Masks would be required for passengers and staff. The presentation was met with excitement by the committee."I love the fact it is innovative and outside the box," Committee Member Victoria Curran said. "This is a terrific idea, I love it!" Committee Member Johanna Schiavoni added."Sometimes it's the craziest ideas that are the best ones," Committee Member Micah Parzen said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind.
