SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of assaulting a Pacific Beach woman while she slept in her own home was in court for the first time on Monday. Jeffrey Hanze pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include sexual assault during a burglary. The 55-year-old was arrested in L.A. County on October 29th for the crime. Police say Hanze broke into a home in Pacific Beach on October 1st, getting in through an open window, then assaulting a woman while she slept. The woman woke up to the assault and Hanze got away.On Monday, the judge agreed to increase his bail from 0,000 to a million dollars and issued a protective order for the victim. A background check shows Hanze has a criminal record, including two felonies in San Diego County and several sex crimes dating back to 2011 in Arizona. Hanze is due in court again on November 15th.    913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The door-to-door salesman accused of taking swings at a Pacific Beach woman and a string of threatening outbursts while canvassing neighborhoods is behind bars.An arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 6, 2019, for 45-year-old Corey Lamont Terry on felony charges of making criminal threats and attempted burglary, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. According to San Diego Police, Terry was arrested by Sheriff's deputies on Jan. 9. Shawn Takeuchi told 10News. Terry had reportedly been visiting neighborhoods in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach, claiming to be raising money for charity.Several people told 10News he would become aggressive when he was denied donations."He chases me across the street, screaming that he's going to kill me," Sarah Jarzabek told 10News. "Scared to death, honestly."Jarzabek recorded video of a confrontation with Terry on Nov. 2, 2019. SDPD positively identified the man who reportedly swung at Jarzabek as Terry. He was detained and questioned the next day, but ultimately released.“It’s a little bit concerning he’s still out there,” said John Christenson, an Ocean Beach resident who said he encountered Terry on Oct. 16, 2019. “Basically said that he did want to knock me out, was getting in my face, calling me all kinds of names. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The arsonist who rammed his car into the Raytheon building and set fire to a La Jolla home learned his sentence Tuesday. Daniel Mackinnon, 37, will spend seven years in prison for crimes the Assistant U.S. Attorney described as “politically-motivated.” Early on the morning of Apr. 24, Mackinnon went to the home of a prominent real estate developer. Two adults and three small children were home asleep at the time, prosecutors said. RELATED: Driver arrested after car crashes into defense contractor building in Kearny MesaMackinnon “poured an accelerant onto the door and ignited it,” officials said. “Investigators found remnants of a plastic water bottle, a pry bar and a bottle cap at the scene.” DNA evidence from the bottle cap helped tie Mackinnon to the crime. There were no reports of any injuries. Later the same morning, Mackinnon drove into the Kearny Mesa offices of Raytheon, a defense contractor. The car bounced back, and Mackinnon got out, opening his back hatch, prosecutors said. Moments later, flames erupted from the back of the car and damaged the office building. According to Airbnb, guests travel to San Diego from 71 countries and every state in the U.S. during the weeks of Pride and Comic-Con. The company also says that 41,000 people rent from Airbnb during the same time period. Comic-Con may draw the masses, but Airbnb hosts say it’s the hospitality that keeps people coming back. 471

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The invisible wounds of war are a heavy burden to carry, long after deployment. Tom Voss, an Army veteran who served in a scout-sniper platoon, knows this feeling well. "I took shrapnel to the head from a rocket-propelled grenade. And then I also had a lot of survivors guilt around the death of my platoon sergeant because that day I was given the day off," said Voss.He says while deployed, there's no time to process these war injuries. "You have a lot of these questions come up, years and years later. A lot of veterans struggle with, could I have done more, can I be forgiven? A lot of these moral questions," said Voss.After serving, he wanted to bury the traumas of war; in the beginning, he was incapable of dealing with the stresses caused by combat experience. "I was using alcohol and then on top of it abusing the medications that were given to me to kind of numb myself to the experiences, because I didn't know how to process them or move through them or move on from them on my own," said Voss. "I had a lot of suicidal ideations, so that's getting to the point of like, how am I going to take my own life?"Voss decided he needed to make a drastic change. He and a fellow veteran walked 2,700 miles across the country, from Wisconsin to California. It was on that trek where he began to heal and learned about holistic approaches to deal with trauma, like meditation and yoga. Voss now travels the world, teaching veterans and their families these techniques. "It's really up to us as veterans to educate the community about the experiences of what it's really like in combat and how it impacts veterans coming home, how it impacts communities, coming home. And most importantly, how it impacts families," said Voss.
