Boeing on Sunday said some of its 737 planes, including many 737 Max aircraft, may have faulty parts on their wings. It's the latest problem Boeing faces as it tries to get its most important and popular airplane, the grounded 737 Max, back in the air.Working with the Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing said it has reached out to airlines that fly 737 planes, advising them to inspect their slat track assemblies on Max and NG aircraft. The 737 NG series includes the 737-600, -700, -800 and -900 planes.Leading edge slats are an aerodynamic control surface that extend from the front of the wing. Some the tracks may not meet manufacturing standards and may need to be replaced, Boeing and the FAA said. They said if the parts are found to be defective, airlines should replace them before returning the planes to service. The faulty parts could fail prematurely or crack. The FAA said a part failure would not bring down a plane, it could damage an aircraft while in flight.Boeing has sent out a service bulletin and the FAA will issue an airworthiness directive requiring airlines to inspect and repair its slat track assemblies within 10 days. The company discovered the problem Friday, when Boeing was meeting with the parts supplier. Boeing employees noticed some of the parts were not heat treated, which led them to believe there might be a safety issue. The development comes as Boeing seeks to get the 737 Max back in the air. The plane was grounded worldwide after a fatal crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jet in March, which followed a fatal crash of a Lion Air jet in Indonesia in October. Crash investigators have focused on an automatic safety feature on the jet as a possible contributor to the crashes. The newly discovered issue affects 148 slat tracks produced by a single supplier, Boeing said. The company said it believes 20 737 Max and 21 737 NG planes may have defective slat tracks. But the FAA advised airlines to check an additional 179 Max planes and 133 NGs to determine if there parts are also faulty. Of the group that needs to be inspected, 33 Max and 32 NG planes are in the United States. The company and the FAA said it has not been notified of any incidents related to the tracks on operating flights, and the fix should take a couple days to complete."We are committed to supporting our customers in every way possible as they identify and replace these potentially non-conforming tracks," said Kevin McAllister, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, in a statement. 2512
As speculation has grown in recent weeks on the status of this month's NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments, Sr. Vice President of NCAA Basketball Dan Gavitt said in an interview on Sunday that the NCAA is "definitively planning" on the tournaments being held as scheduled, in front of spectators. The men's basketball tournament will be played in 14 different venues from coast to coast. Most of the venues will be full with 15,000 to 20,000 spectators at any one time. Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, host of this year's Men's Final Four, could see crowds of more than 70,000. Largely, sports in the United States have remained unaffected by the coronavirus, while other major events and concerts have been canceled or postponed nationwide. Sporting events in overseas are opting to take a different direction, as several European leagues are playing matches in closed stadiums. Professional baseball in Japan has been curtailed amid coronavirus fears. One major event that did cancel was the BNB Paribas Open in Palm Springs, California. But the tennis event so far has been an outlier. Gavitt told CBS that the NCAA has an advisory panel that is in contact with the CDC on a daily basis. He said the NCAA's group of experts are monitoring events on a daily basis. "The guidance we're getting from our experts is playing without fans is not called for," Gavitt said on CBS. One change sports leagues have taken is one many fans might not notice. The NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS jointly announced on Monday that locker rooms will be closed to journalists. Despite community spread of COVID-19 in the Seattle area, the Seattle Sounders of the MLS played in front of an announced crowd of over 33,000, marking one of the largest ticketed sporting events in the United States in recent weeks. At Saturday's game versus the Columbus Crew, additional hand sanitation stations were installed. Although the game went on as planned, Saturday's crowd was the smallest for a Sounders game in more than a decade. The game concluded with players shaking hands, despite advice from health officials to conduct social distancing. 2135

Barneys, an icon of America's luxury clothing world for decades, has filed for bankruptcy. The New York-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection early Tuesday morning. It said in a statement that it had also secured million from affiliates of Hilco Global and the Gordon Brothers Group to help meet its financial commitments."Like many in our industry, Barneys New York's financial position has been dramatically impacted by the challenging retail environment and rent structures that are excessively high relative to market demand," Barneys CEO Daniella Vitale said in a statement. The bankruptcy filing will allow the company "to conduct a sale process, review our current leases and optimize our operations," she added. The company said it will continue to operate five flagship locations in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, as well as Barneys.com and BarneysWarehouse.com. However, it said it is shutting down stores in Chicago, Las Vegas and Seattle. The company is also shutting down five "concept stores" and seven of its nine Barneys Warehouse stores. The move was not unexpected. Reuters reported last month that filing for bankruptcy protection could help alleviate the pressure of expensive leases. The company traces its history to 1923, 1293
Around 26 million people could be affected by severe storms moving eastward across the Gulf Coast states today, April 8.The National Weather Service says storms with "damaging wind gusts and hail will be possible from Georgia and eastern Tennessee northeastward across the Carolinas into southeastern Virginia on Monday, as well as over northern Mississippi and western Alabama.""Spring has arrived and severe weather season has arrived," CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said.Javaheri said portions of Mississippi, parts of Georgia — including Atlanta — as well as Charlotte, Richmond and Raleigh could be affected by the storms. He also warned of a flooding risk from expected heavy rain in the already-saturated Mississippi River valley.Later in the week, another storm system is expected to move out of the Rockies and dump snow from Colorado toward the Great Lakes. The storm could bring blizzard conditions to parts of the Upper Plains Wednesday through Thursday, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.Along with this storm system is a drastic wave of temperatures in the northern tier of the country ranging from 10 to 20 degrees above normal to 15 to 20 degrees below normal through the end of the week, Guy said. 1229
