PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police will return to Portland to help local authorities after the fatal shooting of a man following clashes between President Donald Trump supporters and counter-protesters that led to an argument between the president and the city’s mayor over who was to blame for the violence. On Saturday evening a caravan of about 600 vehicles packed with Trump supporters drove through the liberal city and was met with counterprotesters. Skirmishes broke out and, about 15 minutes after the caravan left the city, a supporter of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer was fatally shot. The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear. Video from the city shows sporadic fighting between the groups, with Trump supporters firing paintball pellets at opponents and using bear spray as counterprotesters threw things at the Trump caravan.The man killed was a member of Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group whose members have frequently clashed with protesters in Portland in the past, its founder, Joey Gibson, said Sunday. He identified the victim as Aaron “Jay” Danielson and called him a “good friend,” but provided no details. Danielson apparently also went by the name Jay Bishop, according to Patriot Prayer’s Facebook page.The Washington state-based group doesn't have a significant national footprint but is well known in the Pacific Northwest. Gibson, a political activist and one-time Senate candidate, founded it in 2016 and its supporters have held many rallies in Portland since the election of President Donald Trump. In response to the deadly incident this weekend, President Trump unleashed a flurry of tweets and retweets. Then, you'll have to get a rapid antigen test when you get there and four-days later.Hawaii lifted its 14-day quarantine last week for people who have a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the flight.“Having these alternatives to quarantine related to travel creates some confusion about what a test really means in the context of quarantine, so I worry a little bit that we're losing that message that a test is only just a moment in time,” said Dr. Shira Doron, an infectious disease physician at Tufts Medical Center.Doron says because of the incubation period for COVID-19, you can have it any time between 2 and 14 days after you're exposed. A negative result is only at the time you took the test.Recent studies have shown your risk of contracting the coronavirus on your flight is very low if strict mask wearing is followed.“I think, you know, the bigger issue is an influx of people incubating COVID-19 into an island that may have done a really good job controlling the pandemic and on the flip side really needs that tourist revenue,” said Doron.She says places like the Bahamas that require multiple tests is more effective.It could be a challenge to get that test before you leave. Doron says many hospitals stopped doing pre-and-post travel testing because of a lack of supplies.The turnaround time on getting the test is also an issue. The mayors of six U.S. cities are appealing to Congress to make it illegal for the U.S. government to deploy militarized agents to cities that don’t want them. The mayors of Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Washington wrote to leaders of the U.S. House and Senate pushing for limits on agent deployments.
