In recent years, scientists have noticed an increased frequency of tornadoes in the Southeast, carving a deadly path in what's called Dixie Alley. While Tornado Alley in the Great Plains still leads in the number of tornadoes, more are appearing in the South. And tornadoes shifting to this region can take a devastating toll. On Sunday, an EF-4 tornado ripped through Alabama's Lee County killing 23 people and cutting a path of destruction at least 24 miles long. It's not an anomaly that tornadoes appear in the Southeast every year, but they present different vulnerabilities, said Victor Gensini, professor of meteorology at Northern Illinois University."As you move east from Kansas to Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, the population density increases rapidly and we also have an issue in the Southeast of more mobile homes," he said. "If you get hit in a mobile home from a tornado, you're much more likely to be killed. You just have a really unique exposure and vulnerability problem."Gensini was co-author on a study that started tracking tornadoes in 1979 and they observed a shift towards the Southeast around 2008.Dixie Alley includes portions of East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Tornado Alley includes the area from central Texas stretching north to Iowa, and from central Kansas and Nebraska east to western Ohio, according to the 1401
Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? The world may never come to an agreement on this matter.Lead actor Bruce Willis attempted to put the argument to rest during his Comedy Central Roast earlier this year saying the film doesn't qualify. On Tuesday, film studio 20th Century Fox took to the other side of the argument with a newly recut trailer of the film, making a convincing case to all the naysayers."Facing Christmas 3,000 miles from his estranged wife and two children, New York policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) flies to Los Angeles bearing presents and hoping to patch up his marriage. Stylish and cool Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) is in Los Angeles as well for the holiday season, but he's not there to give out presents. He's there to take: more than 0 million in negotiable bearer bonds from the multinational Nakatomi Corporation, where McClane's wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) is an executive. When the takeover becomes hostile, it's up to John McClane to take on the terrorists with all the grit and determination he can muster--but not without a sense of humor," the trailer's description reads.Watch the trailer for Die Hard: The Greatest Christmas Story Ever Told below: 1194
Israel's Beresheet, the first privately-funded mission to the moon, has crashed. The spacecraft aimed to perform a soft landing on the moon and would have made Israel the fourth country to do so -- and by far the smallest. Only the United States, the former Soviet Union and China have done it before."I am sorry to say that our spacecraft did not make it in one piece to the moon," said Opher Doron, the manager of Israel Aerospace Industries' Space Division."We made it all the way to the moon. This is a great accomplishment. We are the seventh country to make it all the way to the moon."The 0 million spacecraft, built by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, lost communications with the control room in Israel during the landing sequence. As program managers who had been watching the mission in real time tried to re-establish communications, they also dealt with issues in the spacecraft's main engine. At the time of the communications failure, the Beresheet was traveling at approximately 2,110 mph and was about 120 kilometers (about 74 miles) from its intended landing site."There is a suspicion that we did not land on the moon in the best fashion. We are trying to clarify the matter," a member of the SpaceIL team monitoring the landing sequence said. The spacecraft crashed in the last part of its journey, moments before it was supposed to land.SpaceIL was founded eight years ago to compete for the Google Lunar XPrize. The contest offered million for the first privately funded team to launch a spacecraft to the moon, transmit high-definition video and travel 500 meters in any direction. The XPrize was cancelled in January 2018 but the Israeli team decided to continue its pursuit of the moon landing. The Beresheet spacecraft was launched on board a Falcon 9 rocket in late February. It traveled a total of 4 million miles to the moon, soaring around the Earth before entering orbit around the moon. 1940
It seems like common sense, but many Americans do it. Although remote start technology has grown, thousands of cars were stolen in 2018 due to people leaving their car unattended to warm up during the winter. One insurance group is reminding Americans not to leave their cars running unattended.According to National Insurance Crime Bureau, 81,911 vehicles were stolen with the keys or fobs left in them in 2018. "We always warn consumers about the dangers of leaving a vehicle unlocked and not taking the fob or key with them, but leaving the car running with a key or fob in the vehicle is a prime target for an opportunistic thief," said NICB Chief Operating Officer Jim Schweitzer. The NICB also reminded drivers that in many states and municipalities, leaving a car with the key in the ignition and running could be against the law. For instance, in Ohio, it is a minor misdemeanor punishable by a 0 fine to leave a car running unattended on public property (such as the side of the road). In Colorado, the crime is a class B traffic infraction, punishable with a fine of up to 0. The NICB offered the following tips: Lock the vehicle, set the alarm, and take all keys or fobs.Do not leave the garage door opener in the vehicle.Take a picture of your registration on your cell phone, and do not leave the registration or other papers with personal information in the vehicle.Never leave a car unlocked and running to warm it up or while stopping for a quick cup of coffee. It only takes a moment for the opportunistic thief to jump inside and drive off. 1575
