SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2-year-old boy who was reported missing by his stepfather in San Diego in 2002 suffered a fatal injury and died while in the sole custody and care of the stepfather, who disposed of the body, a prosecutor said Thursday, but a defense attorney said her client loved the child and didn't kill him.Tieray Jones, 39, told police that Jahi Turner disappeared from a park near the southern end of Balboa Park the afternoon of April 25, 2002.Deputy District Attorney Bill Mitchell told a jury that Jones married Jahi's mother -- Tameka Jones -- after Jahi was born and the couple moved to San Diego from Maryland in February 2002.The defendant was left to care for Jahi when Tameka Jones -- who was in the Navy -- went out to sea on April 22, 2002, the prosecutor said.Three days later, the defendant called 911 and said his step son disappeared in the park when the defendant walked to a vending machine."We will piece together what happened that week," Mitchell told thejury. "You're gonna know what happened to Jahi based on the evidence."Two days before he reported the child missing, Jones told his wife that Jahi had fallen off the bed and bumped his head, but it was "no big deal," the prosecutor said.Jones also complained that Jahi had wet the bed, according to Mitchell. Witnesses at the apartment complex where Jones lived said they saw the defendant carrying three large trash bags to a Dumpster just before the trash was to be picked up the day before the child disappeared, the prosecutor told the jury.One neighbor commented, "It didn't look like regular trash," Mitchell said. The prosecutor pointed to "glaring inconsistencies" in the defendant's statements to police about what happened.Mitchell said there was "no credible evidence" that Jahi was at the park that day. Despite a massive search, the child's body was never found.Jones was arrested in April 2016 in North Carolina and brought back to San Diego to face a murder charge.Deputy Public Defender Courtney Cutter told the jury that her client was a suspect in his stepson's disappearance almost immediately.Cutter said the defendant and Tameka Jones were used to just "getting by" and had very little when they moved to San Diego.The attorney said her client loved Jahi as if he were his own. "Tieray did not kill this child," Cutter told the jury."He was an imperfect father, yes, but not a reluctant one." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Hillcrest man in search of his stolen bikes made a startling discovery when he stepped into an abandoned church.Early Wednesday morning, surveillance video shows two men stealing three pricey bikes after cutting a metal lock for a garage, as Wilbur Kookmyer slept inside his condo on Georgia Street."Felt angry, felt violated," said Kookmyer.A day later, Kookmyer went in search of his bikes and he didn't go far. Next door - inside an abandoned church at Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue - a security guard agreed to let him have a look.Room after room, he found belongings left behind: clothes, food, and even a drone. In one room is a makeshift bed. There is a bike in another, but it's not his."It's a homeless hotel. They come and go as they please. Free of charge," said Kookmyer.But mostly, what Kookmyer sees is filth."Smells like urine and feces. Needles and trash. It's just disgusting. Looks like a landfill and a health hazard," said Kookmyer.The church was sold last year to a developer. LMC North Park Holdings is still awaiting permits to demolish the site. In the meantime, it's become a campground for transients."Constantly coming and going. Get everything boarded up, but breaking back in every time," said Kookmyer.While Kookmyer was recording, they ran into several people, who were escorted off the property. Kookmeyer says since the church was sold, he's seen a spike in crime - from vandalism to home and car break-ins."My next-door neighbor caught someone breaking in and using his shower," said Kookmyer.Wilbur says it's time for the demolition to happen and for security to be stepped up. "There's no excuse for it being this filthy and creating that much trouble for people around the church," said Kookmyer.A spokesperson for LMC North Park Holdings issued this statement:“We share the concerns of the neighbors and are working diligently to better secure the site until we are able to obtain the permits necessary to begin demolition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A beach on Naval Base Point Loma went from unsafe and unappealing to a sandy destination that also houses a new oceanic ecosystem.In the 1980s, Smuggler’s Cove was hit with erosion and until recently, was rocky and uneven.“This beach had virtually eroded away,” said Captain Ken Franklin, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Point Loma.In the past three years, a revitalization project has been in the works, with different additions to the beach coming from unique places. The Navy’s environmental team had the idea to use rubble and cement from a fuel pier that had been demolished to build an underwater reef. They planted eelgrass along the reef, restoring the habitat.“That actually enhances the fish production, enhances the overall ecology of the system. So it actually enhances and helps some of the protected species, with the birds, gives them food to eat, and overall enhance the production of the area,” said Navy marine biologist Sean Suk.Since the work started, the eelgrass has seen an estimated 700-1,000% increase, and 15-18 fish species have been spotted swimming around the new ecosystem.In addition, the Navy brought in sand that the Coast Guard had leftover from their dredging they had finished. This created a sandy beach, compared to the rocky area that was there before.“It’s a win for everybody. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver lost control of their vehicle Tuesday night, crashing into a power pole while trying to avoid other cars Tuesday night.The crash, which happened around 8 p.m., caused an explosion and sent power lines arching. Several nearby bushes caught fire because of the explosion but firefighters were able to put them out quickly.The incident happened near South 43rd and Division Streets.   428

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego leaders returned from their trip to Mexico City on Wednesday night. The three-day trip focused on building stronger border relations. The trip comes a week after President Trump threatened to close the border if congress didn't come up with an immigration deal or if Mexico didn't stop migrants heading north. The delegation included San Diego and Imperial Beach mayors, Kevin Faulconer and Serge Dedina and former mayor Jerry Sanders. Several city council members from various cities also attended meeting with top Mexican officials. A big topic of conversation was the ongoing Tijuana sewage issue. Impeiral Beach Mayor, Dedina, says the conversations were positive and promising. Dedina says plans to fix the issue include reapairing the water plant that's currently spilling the sewage, taking all of the water out of the Tijuana River Valley and putting an earth-fill dam on the Mexican side to stop the sewage from getting to the beaches. San Diego leaders say the trip was productive and explained that the end goal was to find solutions to enhance the region for the benefit of both countries. 1142
