HAWAII — There was a close call at a preschool in Hawaii. The Hawaii State Department of Health says a classroom assistant mistook Pine-Sol for apple juice while serving snacks. The assistant at Kilohana United Methodist Church in East Oahu was preparing a snack for the children and grabbed a bottle of the cleaning liquid from a clean-up cart in the kitchen on November 27.The assistant apparently mistook it for apple juice because of its similar color, the school's director told the health department inspector.A classroom teacher smelled the cleaning product and stopped students from drinking it.EMS evaluated three students who took small sips of the cleaning liquid, but none of them needed treatment. One parent whose child was in the class says she was shocked a mistake like that could happen. The State Health Department says each year about a dozen people accidentally ingest Pine-Sol, and half of them are kids.CNN contributed to this report. 966

Having a full kitchen of healthy foods is becoming a luxury. Food pantries across the country are still seeing a dramatic increase in need.“I hope that we eventually get this thing under control, so we can wean everyone off the need for food pantries and shelters like ours, because this is not sustainable,” said Kim Guadagno, CEO of Fulfill, a New Jersey food bank.Guadagno says her organization has seen an increase in demand of almost 2.5 million meals compared to this time last year.Feeding America says at the peak in April, there was a 70% increase in demand, and it’s sustained around 60% higher. Many food banks say they're seeing many families for the first time.“You can always tell someone who has never been to a food pantry before. They come literally right up to this building in tears, because they’ve never had to ask for help before and it’s crushing to all of us,” said Guadagno.Feeding America expects that increased need will continue during the holidays, which is an important time for food banks.“We see increased awareness around hunger and food insecurity around the holidays. It’s a great time for food banks to fundraise. A lot of that fundraising helps sustain them throughout the year,” said Zuani Villarreal, Director of Communications at Feeding America.Food banks are having to purchase more product because of supply chain disruptions. They say right now, cash donations are critical for that and to purchase new supplies like PPE. 1471

GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — In the span of just over 12 hours, a wildfire burning west of Denver grew in size sixfold, reaching nearly 200,000 acres and forcing evacuations in Grand County and the total closure of Rocky Mountain National Park.Between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, the East Troublesome fire exploded from a size of 19,086 to about 170,000 acres — making it the second-largest wildifre in state history. The top four largest wildfires in state history have all occurred this year."We planned for the worst," Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said Thursday. "This is the worst of the worst of the worst."Much of the fire growth is due to the weather, terrain and beetle-kill lodgepole pine, according to the incident management team. An incident commander for the fire said Thursday morning that the fire expanded 20 miles north of Granby and Grant Lake into Rocky Mountain National Park.A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 p.m., and winds are expected make the fire extremely active Thursday, according to the incident management team.Just before 9 a.m. Thursday, a spokesperson from Rocky Mountain National Park announced the entire park had closed to visitors due to the fires west of the Continental Divide. Air quality is hazardous within the park. The entire town of Grand Lake was evacuated Wednesday, along with all residents north, west and along Highway 34. Evacuees were told to go south on Highway 34, if possible.Around 1 a.m. on Thursday in a Facebook video, Schroetlin explained just how difficult the day had been."I have a message," he said. "I'm not even sure what those words are. Today (Wednesday) has been an extremely, extremely challenging day for our community. We knew this fire was here. We knew the impacts of it. We looked at every possible potential for this fire. We never, ever expected 6,000 acres per hour to come upon our community."He said the winds were strong and as a result, the fire's behavior was strong. They've never experienced challenges like Wednesday, he said. However, the community stepped up."As we drive around this northern part of Grand County, I don't know what we'll see in the morning, to be honest," he said. "But you know what? Together, as a community, we're going to get through this."Schroetlin said authorities made "some incredible rescues" on Wednesday, including an incident where deputies were able to rescue four loggers whose vehicle had caught fire on a county road.High winds followed by a cold front are expected Thursday. More resources are coming in to help around the Grand Lake and Granby areas. This story was originally published by Stephanie Butzer on KMGH in Denver. 2680

Health officials in Wisconsin are warning against eating a traditional holiday dish called "cannibal sandwiches."According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the dish is raw, lean ground beef served on bread with sliced onions, salt and pepper. It's also sometimes known as "tiger meat" or "steak tartare.""Many Wisconsin families consider them to be a holiday tradition, but eating them poses a threat for Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter and Listeria bacteria that can make you sick," said the Wisconsin Department of Health Services in a Facebook post on Saturday. The department added that ground beef should "ALWAYS" be cooked to an internal temperature of 160° F and that it doesn't matter where you buy the meat, it's still risky. There have been eight outbreaks linked to eating a raw ground beef dish, including one large Salmonella outbreak that involved more than 150 people in Dec. 1994, according to the health department. For more information, click here. This story was originally published by staff at WTMJ. 1039

Harry Dean Stanton, the longtime character actor whose face had its own unique character, has died at 91, according to his agent, John S. Kelly.Stanton passed away Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.Stanton, whose gaunt, worn looks were more recognizable to many than his name, appeared in more than 100 films and 50 television shows, including the films "Alien" and "Repo Man" and the series "Big Love" and the recent version of "Twin Peaks."For many years, Stanton played lesser-billed characters. In 1984, he got his first part as a leading man in "Paris, Texas," which won a host of awards, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The late film critic Roger Ebert wrote of the actor in 1989, "No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad."Stanton often played haggard men with battered souls, Turner Classic Movies said in its description of him. TCM is owned by CNN's parent company, Time Warner."A restless, unconventional spirit off-camera, Stanton always lent a sympathetic realness to the menacing criminals and barroom-dwelling outsiders he stashed beneath his craggy face and wiry, worn frame," TCM said.Writer and director David Lynch said in a statement that Stanton was a great human being as well as a great actor."There went a great one. There's nobody like Harry Dean. Everyone loved him," he said.Lynch appeared in the 2012 documentary "Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction.""How would you like to be remembered?" Lynch asked."It doesn't matter," Stanton said, who often greeted interviewers' questions with short answers. In the film, playwright and actor Sam Shepard (who died in July) said that Stanton realized his well-lined face was "the story.""You read all kinds of things into it," Shepard said.Stanton once said he didn't blame anyone for the kinds of parts he was given early in his career."I hated being typecast in those roles. It was personally limiting, only playing stereotyped heavies," he said to The Sydney Morning Herald in 1987. "But I got those roles because I was angry, because that's what I projected ... and I had an extreme lack of self-confidence."He told the Australian newspaper he had changed by adhering to Eastern mysticism, which helped him become more self-aware and less angry.Ed Begley Jr., who worked with Stanton on several projects, had been friends with him since the 1970s."Just lost my friend of the past 45 years. Harry Dean Stanton. My heart is broken, but at 91...a life well lived," Begley tweeted.James Woods wrote: "Saw this and I just jumped up out of my chair. I am devastated. I loved Harry Dean. Loved him. So much. OMG. #RIPHarryDeanStanton." 2711
