CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Calexico is preparing for President Trump’s visit and several planned protests at the border Friday. Some people in the city told 10News they’re happy the President is paying attention to their community while others say they don’t support him and wish he’d stay away. A plaque now hangs from a new section of the border fence proclaiming it to be the first section of Trump’s border wall. RELATED: Possible border shutdown causes widespread concernThe new section stretches 2.2 miles, stands 30 feet high and has spaces between each metal post and wire along the front and top.Border Patrol requested the section of the fence when Barack Obama was in office, but they never broke ground on the project. In town, deputies began preparing for the big event Friday. At least one protest is planned for the President’s arrival. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Monique Ramsey has struggled with weight most of her life."I'm 5'1, and so weight loss has always been something that's a struggle, and it's definitely a heredity component."Ramsey said diet and exercise were never enough."I think I've tried just about everything, and you know, it's hard to sort of feel like you're starving yourself through crazy diets and things like that," said Ramsey.RELATED: The DNA diet creates personalized diet plan for users; here’s how it worksIn July of 2017, she decided to try something new."This is a tool that is such a game-changer," said Ramsey. That tool is the Obalon Balloon System. Mark Brister invented the device at the Obalon Therapeutics manufacturing center in Carlsbad."There weren't a lot of technologies out there to help people who were just overweight. Most people had to wait until they were morbidly obese in order to be eligible for treatment so we decided to invent a product that would fit the middle ground," said Brister, who is the Chief Technology Officer at Obalon Therapeutics.Obalon is the only FDA approved swallowable gas-filled balloon for people roughly 30 to 100 pounds overweight. RELATED: Eating breakfast may not help you lose weight, study says"It's about the size of a cheeseburger, and the doctor will place three of these by having you swallow them in a simple in-office procedure over the six to eight weeks," said Brister. The balloon is inside a large capsule that is attached to a thin catheter. The doctor uses a computerized navigation system to track the balloon as it travels into the stomach. Once it's in the stomach, the balloon is filled with gas. The patient will get three balloons over six to eight weeks."This is sort of like being able to have stomach stapling without having surgery," said Ramsey.Side effects after the first balloon is inserted can include nausea and cramping. Ramsey said she didn't have any problems."You're actually taking up the room in the stomach, so you're having a smaller stomach, but there are no permanent after-effects long term," said Ramsey.RELATED: Celebrities are fighting over the 'keto' diet. Here's what science says about how healthy it isAfter six months, the balloons are removed during an endoscopic procedure. Ramsey lost 25 pounds and has managed to keep it off. She wants to lose 25 more."For me, that's a huge jump start, and I've never been able to get that far in that short amount of time."The balloons are kept in for six months, but success requires a life long commitment."What the balloons do, they're sort of a tool, I think is a tool to sort of say, help retrain your brain and help recondition yourself to eat less, eat better, make better choices," said Ramsey. The program also includes a year of nutrition and exercise support.RELATED: La Jolla lab creating cure for baldness"I can still be just as happy. I don't need M&M's, I don't need Fritos, or whatever "thing" it is, it really helps reset your mind and motivation to stay healthy," said Ramsey."All of a sudden, you start to see people as they start to lose weight, they start to gain confidence, so I have many times, we've seen people lose 50 or 75 pounds and gain 500 pounds of confidence," said Brister. In October, Obalon Therapeutics opened its first full-service weight loss center in 4S Ranch. Rita Starritt is the doctor."When you are very overweight, you've already tried a low carb diet, and you've tried a keto diet and you need something else to happen you and a lot of it is education, lifestyle changes, nutrition, the system, the balloon system helps people lose twice as much weight as those who did diet and exercise alone," said Dr. Starritt. In 2017, the FDA issued a warning about potential risks of liquid-filled intragastric balloons. The balloons have been linked to the deaths of twelve people around the world since 2016. The FDA has not issued any warnings related to the Obalon system."What Obalon does is it floats up, and it moves around, it's very buoyant, so in terms of the ability for the device to float around and not cause damage to the stomach, that's really what differentiates us," said Amy Vandenberg, Chief Clinical and Regulatory Affairs Officer of Obalon Therapeutics. The treatment costs roughly ,000 and includes a year of nutrition and exercise support."It's all about moderation, and the balloons are a nice reminder of that so that you don't have to feel that something is forbidden," said Ramsey. 4487

CHERRY VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Apple Fire in Riverside County has almost doubled in the last day. As of 5:00 p.m. Sunday, it has grown to 20,516 acres, with 0% containment. Mandatory evacuations are in place for more than 7,000 people. Authorities believe this may have been caused by arson. This weekend, multiple San Diego fire agencies are helping fight the Apple Fire. Experts say our local agencies are equipped to support the fight in Riverside and any incidents at home. The conditions are almost too perfect for the raging Apple Fire."Fuel, weather, and topography - All three of those things come together in that part of the state," CAL FIRE San Diego Fire Captain, Issac Sanchez said. The Apple Fire is burning just north of the city of Beaumont in Riverside County. Sanchez says the flames are relentless, and crews on the ground need all the help they can get."Any agency, regardless of their size, cannot handle anything of this nature, in size and complexity," Sanchez said.Overnight, the fire erupted into the San Bernadino National Forest, which officially made it a federal incident. But multiple local crews from San Diego County are now at ground zero to help."It's not just a CAL FIRE show. It's not just a US Forest Service show," Sanchez said. "Everybody is on deck. Everybody is contributing. Everybody is engaged right now."Some of the local crews assisting in Riverside County include San Diego Fire-Rescue, Poway Fire Department, Coronado Fire Department, and the North County Fire District.Early Sunday afternoon, maintenance crews were doing final checks for CAL FIRE San Diego's air fleet, stationed at the Ramona Airport. These are valuable assets on stand-by to help attack the flames from above.ABC 10News learned that just before 3 pm Sunday, one of CAL FIRE San Diego's small tactical planes out of Ramona were dispatched for emergency assistance. It is now guiding large air tankers above the Apple Fire. But with so many local resources being taken out of the mix, many wonder if we are prepared if something like the Apple Fire erupts now in San Diego county."We never will give more than what we can afford to give," Sanchez answered.Sanchez says allocating resources is carefully calculated. Even if local crews are being good neighbors to assist others, crews here are still ready."We can still maintain an aggressive initial attack, and that is absolutely what we will do locally should any fire break out," Sanchez said.CAL FIRE reminds us that it is vital to be fire ready, especially during these dry, hot summers. 2568

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A North San Diego County woman was awarded child support from her ex-husband nearly 50 years after she says he left her with a young daughter. Toni Anderson makes no apologies for going after the man she calls her "deadbeat ex" for having her raise their 3-year-old daughter on her own. Anderson says her ex-husband chose to go to Canada rather than pay court-ordered child support in the early 1970s. "I kind of put it on the back burner and just kind of forgot about it over the years," said Anderson. She supported her daughter while working as an interior designer in Los Angeles at a firm her daughter now runs."I'm not negating the fact I was able to send my daughter to college, Paris. We traveled and had a good time. But the money runs out." MUST READ: Graffiti referencing New Zealand left at Escondido mosque after possible arsonAnderson admits she rents her part of the house. And now that she's retired, money is tight. Then it dawned on her."I realized in the middle of the night one night last year, 'Hey, there's no statute of limitations on child support.'" Anderson looked up old court papers and last month notified her ex-husband, who's now living in Oregon: she wanted him to pay up. But the amount she was seeking now was way beyond what he was asked to pay nearly a half-century ago."He was only supposed to give me like a 160 dollars a month. Well, that was 50 years ago. That today is a lot more money."With accrued interest of 10 percent a year, what would have been a total payment of some ,000 is now more than 0,000. "I don't think enough women get this. And I think they're afraid."MUST READ: Escondido company recalling avocados due to possible Listeria contaminationAlong with getting what she's due, Anderson wants to spread the word to other single parents in California: You can still collect. And to those who skipped out, her message is for them to watch out."I think he's a little bit panicked.," said Anderson of her husband's reaction to her pursuit. "And I'm very happy because I was panicked all these years. Now, it's his turn."Toni Anderson's lawyer, Sara Yunus, Esq., an Associate Attorney for Antonyan Miranda, LLP, tells 10News a private hearing in Vista Court Wednesday resulted in a settlement of 0,000. 10News also reached out to her ex-husband's attorney. There has been no response. 2379

CHICAGO (AP) — An attorney for a U.S. Army special forces sergeant arrested in what authorities are calling an apparently random shooting at an Illinois bowling alley that left three dead has told an initial hearing that her client may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Duke Webb appeared in a Winnebago County courtroom in Rockford Monday. He faces three counts of murder and three counts of first-degree attempted murder in the shooting at Don Carter Lanes, in Rockford, on Saturday. According to The Associated Press, the three men who died were aged 73, 65, and 69.The AP reported that two teenagers were wounded - a 14-year-old boy was shot in the face, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the shoulder, and a 62-year-old man who was shot several times. His lawyer also told the court Webb appeared to have issues with memory loss and that he'll undergo mental health evaluations. A judge denied Webb's bond and set his arraignment for Feb. 16. The Army says Webb had four deployments to Afghanistan, the last ending in July. 1042
