Five people died when a small plane crashed in a Southern California parking lot on Sunday, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.The twin-engine Cessna plane crashed in Santa Ana, and had been bound to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, said Capt. Tony Bommarito, the public information officer with Orange County Fire Authority.There were no survivors on the airplane, he said.The plane crashed just a block away from South Coast Plaza, a large mall. There were no injuries on the ground. The plane hit an unoccupied, parked vehicle on the ground, but the owner was in a store at the time of the crash, Bommarito said. 638

First Lady Melania Trump announced Monday that the new tennis court pavilion at the White House is completed, just six weeks before President-elect Joe Biden is expected to be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.According to a White House press release, the project included renovating the existing tennis court and children's garden, as well as building the new pavilion, which was both "planned to blend with the existing structures on the White House grounds."The new building's design was inspired by the White House's existing architectural style, especially the East and West Wings, the first lady's office said."The colonnade, parapet wall, and fanlight windows tie the new building to the existing look and feel of the White House," the press release stated."I am pleased to announce the completion of the Tennis Pavilion on the White House grounds. Thank you to all of the talented craftsmen who made this project possible and to the generous supporters of the White House," said First Lady Melania Trump. "It is my hope that this private space will function as both a place of leisure and gathering for future First Families."Planning for the renovation began in early 2018. The Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission approved the project in June 2019. For those fortunate to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, many are finding they now have more time to commit to home construction projects large and small and everything from retiling a bathroom to a large home renovation."In many communities in the home space itself, what we’ve seen is after that initial decline and slowdown where many of these businesses were struggling, a pretty pronounced uptick now in the level of business coming through," said Nate Chai of Thumbtack. Things break down. That was [our] first request and Jamie has been wiping down the door handles before they come and when they leave," said Fillip Hord, who is also Chief Organizing Officer of MakeSpace.The couple also recommends decluttering and clearing out the space you want worked on, requesting contractors wear masks, stay six feet apart and wash their hands frequently. But also be prepared for your home project to take longer than expected."Instead of having 14 different contractors and three different trades in your house at one time, you're going to have the carpenter one day. The next day maybe one electrician. The next day maybe a plumber and then the plumber has to wait for the electrician to come back," said Fillip Hord.Still, they say getting the projects done right now has its benefits."Now is the perfect time to take time to get to those projects you’ve been wanting to get to for a while in your home. There’s really no better time," said Jamie Hord."From what we saw at the start of the pandemic is people sort of hunkered down. There was quite a drop in the number of projects coming through our platform but in more recent weeks, what we’ve seen is it actually accelerating pretty fast," said Chai.In fact, at the end of March, Thumbtack says home renovation projects were down 40 to 50%. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and Emma Gonzalez, who took cover in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, during a 2018 school massacre, made the case for gun control on Wednesday at that Democratic National Convention.Giffords was victimized by gun violence as a member of Congress at a town hall event in her Arizona district in 2011. The incident nearly took her life, as she spent months in recovery. There were six people fatally wounded at the 2011 incident.“America needs all of us to speak out, even when you have to fight to find the words,” Giffords said. “We are at a crossroads. We can let the shooting continue or we can act. We can protect our families, our future. We can vote. TUESDAY'S PRIMARYWhile Tuesday's primary does not involve presidential politics in Florida, a number of races impacting the state legislature, Congress and local governments are taking place. HISTORY OF ISSUESFlorida's issues with elections goes all the way back to 1876. The presidential election was still undecided with Florida being unsure how to award its 4 Electoral College votes. Florida wasn't alone. South Carolina and Louisiana were also unsure. As a result, Congress had to step in and resolve the issue with Rutherford B. Hayes eventually becoming President. Most Americans know Florida because of the issues in 2000. With another presidential election hanging in the balance, Al Gore and George W. Bush battled for votes during a 36-day recount. Palm Beach County's butterfly ballot, with confusing placement of names for some voters, likely resulted in 2,800 votes for Pat Buchanan instead of Gore. "Hanging Chads" in the state became a household phrase nationwide to describe ballots with paper fragments still hanging from them. Ballots that year were hole punch style for many voters. Like in 2000 and 2016, Florida has long been an important state for nominees to win. It has helped choose the winning presidential candidate every election since 1992.RECENT ISSUESIssues in Florida's Elections have continued in recent years. In Broward County, nearly 1,000 uncounted ballots were found in a warehouse in 2012. In 2018, 22 ballots were counted that were supposed to be rejected.
